hey guys,
at wortk right now so i can't test this out but thought i'd see if anyone might no off the top of their head.
for mala layouts, the background image, anyone know if mala can play a video as a background? so it'd be one video as a background with a smaller video showing gameplay playing over the background. of course along with game lists, etc. displayed over the background.
i'm looking to have animated backgrounds in short.
thanks, t

I've never seen any layout that does that. I'm pretty sure it's not possible now.
The main issue is that if I'm not mistaken, all the graphics (except for the video support that is there right now) are rendered to a single "window" and you can't then float the video window under that graphics window, which is what would need to happen to be able to draw the screen over a background video.
But loadman could answer that for certain.

that's what I was thinking to. But a simple "send to back" on that image/file/video could rectify?

No, because Mala redraws the entire window graphics when necessary, so the video might be playing back there, but you won't see it.
Same reason as why you can setup transparency on everything, but you won't ever see the desktop "through" mala.
But background video would mean some fantastic effects I'd love a "Matrix falling letters" effect, or in my case a billowing red taffeta curtains effect <g>

IIRC, video is always on top in Mala without exception.
This is why you'll see layouts with parts overlapping snapshots, but never video.

no but you can do this ;D
