Title: Contact cement toxic?
Post by: fablog on April 08, 2013, 07:07:04 pm
Hi Guys,

I may need to laminate my cab inside my home depending of the weather this days. I would like to know if contact cement is too much toxic for that?

Thank you

You'll definitely want to make sure you have a lot of ventilation.

Not toxic if it used properly.  Lots and lots of fresh air when going from glue to semi tacky and and give it another day to finish off gassing.   After that it is what laminate is always applied with and is under millions of countertops and is perfectly safe unless you want to eat it or some other strange method of contact.

Call me old fashioned but ever since the great shampoo drinking disaster of the early 70`s (when i was born so it answers a lot :) ) the manufacturer should actually state that on the tin  :dunno I`d rather rely on that information than what someone says in a forum when the word toxic is in question  :dizzy: mmmmm shampoooo......

The four magic letters are "MSDS".

Go to the manufacturer's website and they should have a link to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which will tell you what you need to know about potential dangers working with the material and any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that you should use.

I've used contact cement and find that its odor, like its bonding strength is super strong. I recommend applying it outside or in a open garage.

TLDR: Its stinky- your wife will hate you if you apply it indoors.

I used the water based contact cement inside with no problams. Just an open window and closed doors, and I did it in a room I had no hurry to be in. http://lepageproducts.com/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=89 (http://lepageproducts.com/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=89)

I think the water based stuff is the way to go. The petroleum based stuff should prob not be used inside. It will a) make u high as a kite, b) stink up ur house, and c) could combust if ur near any kind of open flame (furnace, water heater, fireplace, etc). I'm going to try the water based cement on my next build to avoid all those hassles of the other stuff.
