Ok, I have a choice between the 2 monitors. My intention is to mount the LCD monitor horizontal and I intend to play a mix of vertical and horizontal titles. I believe in my case, the best choice of monitor would be the 20" inch LCD with an aspect ratio of 4:3 correct? The justification here is that the vertical space will be much better than the the 23" as the image will be 'squished"
Hmm, or would it be better to mount the LCD vertical, but if so then when loading up a horizontal title, it'll be quite small horizontally + vertically.
Anyhow, not sure how you all have your cabs configured, but I'm in the process of redoing mine.

I would go the 4:3 20 inch the vertical height would be more then the 23 inch wide. and most games are 4:3 anyway.
I have a 19inch 4:3 in mine.

Thanks - I don't know how well horizontal games will look on the 20" LCD mounted vertical however - I hope it's workable.

sorry. I meant mounted horizontally 20imch 4:3 will still hve more vertical height then the 23 inch mounted horizontally.

Here is a simple list that gives monitor dimensions for all types of LCD monitors. Makes it simple to decide which to use.

The table shows that the 20 inch monitor has more height than the 23 inch wide as Mameshane noted above.
20 inch 4:3 is 12 inches high
23 inch 16:9 is 11.3 inches high

What I having been toying with and i have no idea if its even possible is to, get a 27" wide screen, mount it vertically and have the top section of the screen as the marquee for each game and the lower section for the usual game display!
-
I had this same dilemma
I ended up getting a 24" LED LCD for around $100
I'm just running it in 4:3 mode and I'm going to crop the excess off with the bezel so you'll never know its a 16:9 tv in there. Plus the thing only weighs 6lbs and uses almost no electricity
The viewable size is about 11.75" high.

I'm sure you could do that using .lay files.

That's something i toyed with before getting a marquee monitor. It's definitely doable with lay files but will only work with mame afaik.
