Title: Carpet Installation questions
Post by: mcseforsale on March 29, 2013, 10:46:30 pm
I've been given the OK to install arcade carpet in our new gameroom.  It's 400 square feet, but it's 13' 6" wide.  We've picked out the carpet but I just don't know if this is something I can do myself.  What is the going rate to install carpet these days.  Usually, when you buy carpet for your house, they just include installation in the estimate.

I'd like to either do it myself (never done it), or, go get the arcade carpet from the distributor/manufacturer and have someone install it.  I just don't know how much this will cost.

Any help?

Another thing to consider:  Does the arcade carpet include pad?

You may need to source the pad locally.

You may be able to make a deal on installation in the process.

I'd recommend getting a few estimates for pad and/or installation.

Take a floor layout with measurements, the width of the carpet roll, and a carpet sample.

If you haven't placed the full order yet, ask the carpet mill to send a sample piece.

Is the carpet being glued down, ie concrete floor underneath? If so, it's not a huge chore to install, but messy as crap. When I finished the basement of this house 2 years ago, father in law came over and showed me how. The chore wasn't difficult, but betting the glue off of the hands after was a pain in the butt.

If it's going to be over a wooden subfloor, and you're using tack strips, I'd recommend finding someone to do it. I bought my own kick stretcher thing, but it turned out to be a lot tougher to use it then installers make it look, and if you can find a good installer who knows what he's doing, he'll do a way better job of stretching it then a novice.

I say this as someone who hates paying people to do anything...I do nearly all of my own house maintenance, and if I can't do it, I make sure I learn how for next time. (I actually just bought my first rental house last year, as I really enjoy doing maintenance), but carpet install is one area I've realized it's worth paying someone.

I think I paid my guys 300 a room maybe?

Cool.  Yeah, the carpet that's down there now is tack strips and padded.  However, there's 5" gaps in the carpet clear down to the concrete where the walls were, so it looks a bit weird.

The most important thing about carpet installation is to get it in close to the monitor so your mounting brackets don't show.
