Competition #112: Block Hole

I'm gonna give in to pressure and beautify my thread too:

Arcade Longplay [265] Block Hole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IcRX3O6aAQ#) YouTube video, so everyone can start from the same point.

Romset: Block Hole [blockhl]
Lives: 1
Dificulty: Normal
All: Off
Demo sounds: On (or not)
Last day is Sunday, April 7th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2013.

I've never played this game in arcades, but I liked it on Amiga. Enjoy!

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Good luck!

It's really easy to be doing great then have one mistake end it all within seconds.  Neat pick!

Sounds....I mean reads.....kinky.  I'm not a fan of tetris, but I'll give it a run.

No matter how many times I try I die on 27-29. Best way for extra points that I found is to let the silver pieces get to the bottom before finishing off for big bonus points. 76550

Greed is my demise. I can't stop myself from adding blocks for more points! I barely cracked 30k because of that!

I thought I was tapped out and couldn't get past 29, but I got a lucky placed silver piece! I'm fairly certain this is the best I can do without dedicating my life to this game. 97,200

About 57k on my 1st game, with the handicap of 20lb of baby strapped to my chest. Not a bad choice of game.

I would say that if the rules stated you can only play once, you would have beat me by about 57,000 points.  :notworthy:

OK, technically, it was my 2nd game. In the first game, I didn't know how it was even played. I didn't watch the attract mode or read up on it--I just shot stuff & the block touched the bottom line & it ended.

But that totally doesn't count!!!

I'll definitely give it a few more shots but I'd have to get pretty lucky with block placements to get that high, nice shooting!  :applaud:

OK I got lucky again. Tried four times with the other three scores not even coming close to this one. My hands hurt from all this rapid fire!  Now it's time for more March Madness. 155,860

Stop stressing about what you gonna pick and rather focus on winning!

There was enough of duds introduced here (I'm guilty of at least one), that no one will care

You're killing me! Are you consistently getting past the 'speed up' parts of x/7 and up? There must be some possibilities to make 'big blocks' that I am missing b/c I don't think I could get much faster.

I watched the video and are just taking the blocks out one at a time like in the video unless there very easy ones to combine
plus playing enough that every once in awhile it seems to throw out easier games
most of the time i'm getting nowhere near these scores
and the gf is getting mad cuz i'm not doing nothing else

I haven't fired up my main rig to try this.....

Have to put that finger to other uses. Or use a different joystick. I would every day when my girlfriend came home.

Hmmm. Cute story. Kinda tiresome gameplay. But I don't much like Tetris, either.  3510.  I don't know *how* you could sit around for a couple/few 10k, let alone a hundred plus. Ihh.

Guy, I think you need to have your "pipes" cleaned, you laying pretty thick on innuendos all over the byoac!

I'm having a lot of fun. And I'm hot to trot.

Anyways, I came back to this and broke 20k! Always buying it from eventual haste - not my 'slow hand' in, ah, other matters (HAHAHAHAH) - though the tracking in the game is a little slow. The 'itemization' of the block is kinda lame. It would be way cooler if it, like, flashed silver and vanished! Also the blocks are in the damn way!

(You have to admit my insem....incep.....interpolations....are cleva.)

Played a few more times & decided that I'm not a fan. I enlarge & combine the blocks to get big points, risking ending the game, and all for just points. No big explosions or power-ups or rewards. Very stressful. Not much return on my stress investment.

I throw in the towel.

FYI, strategy that I was employing in my last few games: whenever there is an "L" shaped part that's 2 squares wide & 1 square tall on 1 column & several squares tall on the other, I'd grow that long part of the L like made & then move to the side & pound the fire button until the short side caught up with the long side--as soon as the sides are equal, the disappearance animation starts & your extra shots just stop on the animation--no penalty for overshooting.

Another, calmer try. They start giving sideways arrangements, which I guess encourages trying for larger blocks, but I'm not in that frame of mind at least yet.

After about a dozen games or so. Nowhere near a winning score but I'm happy enough with it to post a screenshot.

I'm trying, and trying and trying, and it just not working out!

Well Comtek I hope you got a pick ready, because sure as hell looks like it's gonna be you! This is one of those game that are easy to get into, but mastering it, sure as hell is another thing.

I spent the last 2 weeks playing this game.   I could never get past 1/7.   45,400.

I finally kind of figured out a method, how to progress past 1/7-2/0 if I only had a few more days, maybe I'd stand a chance to Comtek. Basically I had to stop enlarging around let's say 1/4 and focus on quickly eliminating, but not one by one. If there were clusters of 1 L horizontal, 1 U and 1 vertical, best was to destroy them was to shoot 4 (u don't have to count as that is a max at one time) to destroy vertical and then enlarge with 2+2+2 that gives me more time to maneuver and it's faster than trying to destroy each horizontal L with single line + I noticed a lot of those from edge to edge flat ones were overlapping with horizontal L's and short T's so if I looked carefully then I could add just 2, 3 and eliminate a row of lets say 8 at a time instead of 3 individual ones.

Unfortunately greed got to me again and I screwed up at the flashing-destroy all one and enlarged it too much, yoikes!

I think it's safe to say Comtek won. I thought kixfan would do better, I guess not!

6. jasonbar - ~57K (or so he claims)

Whoops, didn't realize that I'd failed to provide proof. I figured I'd play the game more, then I found that I didn't want to play it more, so the picture never left my phone.

Here's my after-the-fact proof to retain my glorious 6th place honors, so that kixfan doesn't steal my limelight.

Thanks,
-Jason
