Title: Wireless options
Post by: southpaw13 on March 20, 2013, 09:13:10 am
Hello, is there any wireless options to turn on a PC?  I would like to be able to turn on my Mame Machines with a remote.  I think it would be a cool affect just like an arcade turning on.  I currently have my machines set up with a power switch and a button push (micro switch running to the power of the PC).  It would be nice to flip a master switch and then hit a remote button to turn them all on at once!

Any suggestions?

They have remotes that plug into the wall outlet that should work for this for example this unit on Deal Extreme http://dx.com/p/wireless-remote-controlled-ac-power-adapter-set-110v-us-plug-59269 (http://dx.com/p/wireless-remote-controlled-ac-power-adapter-set-110v-us-plug-59269) :

You should be able to set your PC to turn on after a power loss.

Search for remote momentary relay on fleabay or amazon.
If everything other than the PC is run through a smart strip and the power button is triggered by the relay, it should work as you want.
Example:
http://www.amazon.com/Channel-Wireless-Control-Receiver-Momentary/dp/B00BQ842DG/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1363803485&sr=8-10&keywords=remote+momentary+relay (http://www.amazon.com/Channel-Wireless-Control-Receiver-Momentary/dp/B00BQ842DG/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1363803485&sr=8-10&keywords=remote+momentary+relay)

Disclaimer: I have not tried this.

I don't like the power loss thing because the computer will not be shut down properly to use it.  I found these on ebay and I am probably going with it.

Thanks for your help,

Google HTPC turn on with remote to get some ideas.

I have a Windows MCE remote and IR to USB adapter that I use to put the HTPC to sleep/standby and wake it up .    To turn it on from OFF or Hibernate state, I think you need to have a motherboard with CIR port.   Here is some info on CIR http://shop.inteset.com/Products/5-intel-cir-receiver.aspx (http://shop.inteset.com/Products/5-intel-cir-receiver.aspx)
