Title: HLSL issues scan lines not showing in center and edges of rotated screen
Post by: cmoses on March 18, 2013, 10:04:44 am
I have been playing around a little with HLSL on a cocktail cabinet that I am building.  I ran across a strange issue yesterday and was hoping that I could get some help with it.  I am using a nVidia 9600GT video card and a 19" Dell monitor that is rotated horizontally to fit in my cocktail cabinet.  I have defined in the mame.ini that the monitor has a 5:4 aspect ratio and I am also having MAME use 640x480 (or 480x640 when rotated).  When I turn on the HLSL setting I seem to have a small area in the very middle of the screen where the effects are less than the other areas.  The scan lines seem to fade away right in the middle.  I also am seeing the same thin on the very edges of the screen.  I am not sure if this is normal or do to some setting I have and I wanted to see if others are experiencing the same issue.  I have tried different resolutions and settings but seem to be getting the same results.  Any information would be helpful.

In the images below, you can see that right in the middle the scan lines fade away and they are not even showing on Ms. Pacman.  The same happens on the piece of the maze.  These items are right in the middle of the screen.  This runs from top to bottom of the rotated screen.  The same thing happens on the very edge of the screen, there is a very small area right on the edge where the scan lines fade away.

Just curious but what are your screen curvature and pincushion settings?

I have screen curvature and pin cushion set to zero. They should be completely off.

It seems to be an issue with the resolution. I set the resolution in MAME.ini to be 640x480 and this appears to be causing the issue.  I changed to 1280x1024 the native resolution for my 19" Dell monitor and I no longer have the issue. I guess running at the higher resolution is probably better.

Ah, yeah, when using the filters that is the recommended way to go.  Still, I wouldn't have expected this sort of effect from using a lower res.

Depending on your monitor and orientation (ah ah ah), 1024x768 is the lowest you can go. (and the hits keep on ro-llin!)   1280x1024 is really the minimum. Also, the native resolution of any monitor is the one of choice - unless you can go really high. (High baby, high.....)
