I love Operation Wolf. In a future control panel I intend to include a gun. However, I need to think more on it so I can switch it easily with my standard 2 joystick panel I'm starting with.
From what I've learnt, Op Wolf wasn't a light gun but a analog joystick with a gun attached. Has anyone attempted to recreate that setup - perhaps make it themselves even? Are there other games that used a positional gun in this way, to make the project more worthwhile? I assume Operation Thunderbolt but any others you fine people are aware of?
Has anyone set it up to use a light gun? Perhaps that is the best solution? OR maybe a positional looking gun with a light gun within it - that would perhaps be ideal as the whole gun thing was a huge part of my love for this game.

I'm working on implementing two positional guns into the NRFT right now. There have been a handful of folks that have done it. Mamemaster has a pretty sweet one setup IIRC.
Other games off hand that did: T2, beast buster, space gun, silent scope, deadstorm pirates (not emu'd) any game that natively had a cursor on screen was usually a posgun game.
You can play all light gun games in MAME using the positional guns.

Thanks Le Chuck - I'll keep an eye on your project then - do you have the link?

What most people are doing is using the aimtrack or similar ir gun instead of positional guns and lightguns. They are a bit more universal and work particularly well with the positional guns. It's certainly doable, but once you realize that the pos guns are so huge and heavy you really need to make a dedicated cabinet to use them.
There are over 30 positional gun games in mame that I know of.... (I hooked up their outputs. ;) )
Operation Wolf is a bad example.... oddly enough it's a lightgun mounted to a base. All subsequent sequels used a positional gun, but that game in particular was a strange hybrid. Of course a pos gun will work with it.... mame is nice that way.

MameMaster!'s old build thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,64781.msg649061.html#msg649061 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,64781.msg649061.html#msg649061)
Some info from Badmouth:
Anybody made any good progress on joy to mouse sensitivity in MAME for using P-guns on L-gun games that you know of?
If you're talking about using the joy to mouse program, it's not necessary as MAME can use joystick input just fine.
1. Calibrate the positional gun in windows by pointing it along the edges of the screen.
2. In mame.ini set the dead zone to zero.
3. In mame.ini set the saturation to 1 (100%)
4. Calibrate the gun in the game's service menu
5. Adjust the sensetivity under analogue controls in MAME's in-game menu until the crosshairs don't lag behind the gun movement.
(there is only ONE sensetivity setting, ignore all settings that include the word DIGITAL)
Model 2 emulator only accepts mouse input. I haven't found a good solution for it.
Joy to Mouse and other programs I've tried work, but not smoothly.
It's as if the crosshairs are on a grid, snapping from point to point.
You can generally hit all the targets, but the jerky movement and the inability to put the crosshairs exactly where I want (between points on the grid), ruins the experience.
As a note I'm pretty sure that our dear Howard has fixed the issues with model 2 emulators with his recent software release.
My build thread is in my signature under: New Republic Flight Trainer.

Not sure if it it will help or not, but I am using an EMS Topgun III and it works with Operation Wolf and Operation Thunderbolt just fine, so I would think some of the other guns would work fine also. I have all my controllers plugged in at the same time and the gun always works when I select any of the Mame light gun games. No special setup (for my games at least).

I want to know about this too.
I want to run Op Wolf, Thuderbolt, T2.

Apologies for kicking an old thread BUT
I have a Mayflash DolphinBar
I also have an Aimtrak BUT I think it’s no longer working - buttons are but IR tracking isn’t. Any hints on how to fix appreciated but it doesn’t work as mouse movement in windows or calibrate in Windows Ultimarc AimTrak app so think it’s dead.
So I’d like to play Op Wolf with one of these guns in Mame. Dolphin var most likely to work for me for now. It works but where the gun is pointing doesn’t match the crosshair (if turned on for Mame) and I don’t see a calibration option in opwolf service menu (or any settings to be honest beyond button tests) is there one and if so how do I get to them?
