I have been working of this machine for about a month a half. I have be doing concept, design, redesign and purchases of items for the machine. I think things have finally started coming together to a point where I figured I could start the project thread.
First the name. There were three words that I didn't want in the name...MAME, Arcade (or cade), and Fallout. I wanted people to look at the machine and know it is Fallout. I came up with the name The Vault, which is a huge part of the Fallout universe, and as a real vault is where a collection of valuable items are kept safe, the MAME machine is a collection of games.
A big decision I had to make was should I make the cabinet look dilapidated or not. Should I choose to make it look dilapidated would mean it would fit the Fallout universe better, and people who know the Fallout universe would think it was cool. However those that don't know anything about Fallout would wonder why I spent so much money on making something that look like it should be in the garbage. Additionally the machine would be sitting in my living room where everyone can see it. After much though I decided to not make it dilapidated.
I have decided an a base black with the Fallout jumpsuit Blue and yellow for highlights. I designed a Vault 13 door which I want to get machined and attached to the side of the machine with yellow LED's behind to give them a glow. For the t-molding I have chosen light blue.
Here are some images of what I have designed so far...

just a thought..
how about some decoration around the screen similar to pipboy interface?
maybe you can find some vintage audio parts..
-
Well with my design, I was planning on putting something around the bezel, laminated design or something, havn't really figured that part out yet. I was thinking of getting a VU meter , preferable an old one with a 40's or 50's look and design a circuit for the audio volume. Which will go on the admin panel which will be located at the bottem of the monitor bezel.
-
Do you have enough sprockets on that door?
-
Well it would depend on what vault door you look at. In the Fallout 1 opening video, the door has 12, Fallout 2 movie the door had 10. The one I made has 9 the same amount as in the image above with all the people walking in to the vault.

Today, I decided to wire a new power switch into the computer going into the cabinet.
I started by opening up the PC and looking at the power switch to see what I was dealing with. It was just a standard switch, with an orange and white wire. Since I have both of those colours on hand I decided my extension would use the same.
I cut the wires, and connected a 4 pin connector to the end. (I didn't have any 2pin connectors, but didn't have any)
I then disconnected the wires from the switch and connected the new wires and the old wires to the switch, and covered it with fresh heat shrink tubing.
I ran the new wire extension to the back of the computer and cut out a little piece of the grating to poke the new connector through.
Then I created another small connector that is connected to the switch and will just plug in to the computers new power connector.

Here is another update....
This time the interface.
I have changed the Windows XP loading screen to the indian head test pattern that is used in Fallout 3.
I have changed the opening windows sound to Ron Perlman's famous....War, War Never Changes.
In Mala, I have all of the songs, from fallout 1,2 and 3 set to randomly play in the background while in the game select screen.
Here is a screenshot of the Mala layout I created for the cabinet.

Looks good.

Got a small update today. The delivery guy brought me a present..My coin door (http://www.theplaydiumstore.com/Happ_Upper_Coin_Door_2_Entry_With_No_Mechs_p/par-40-0055-01.htm)!!! To help fit it into the Fallout theme, I decided to change out the button inserts with some custom designed ones I made.
-
love the concept, I'd like to suggest a few things.
The name. The Vault......meh Why not give it a name name? Like Vault 54 , or Vault 54's Entertainment Extruder. Even Brotherhood of Games?
LOVE the MaLa layout and love the coin mech inserts. Also, with the Marquee its a little too FO3 for me, I liked (and still have) Fallout 1 and 2 much more.
maybe checkout either the fallout wiki or no mutants allowed. gobs of content to use.
I'll be following along for sure.
-
I had already decided on a different marquee...specifically, because the old one I could not get right because the aspect ratio was way off from what I needed it to be.
Here is the new marquee I am playing with at the moment.

I received the new mounting plates today for my Sanwas. When I sent to switch the plates out, I ran into a small issue. The plates wouldn't fit the way I wanted them too as there was two small off shoots of plastic, I assume are for mounting the sticks without a plate.
Turning the stick 90 degress presented another problem...The bend in the plate would them be in the way of the pin connetor. So I decided since I wouldn't need them, to just dremel them off.
Here are some images of what I did.

Pretty excited to see how this turns out! While I'm not the biggest fan of the Fallout games, I always found the story and style to be top-notch. Subbed!
-
Another little update today. This one is the control panel overlay design.
-
Got a little something today in the mail from OldTymeToys here on the forum. My key chain for the cabinet! :applaud:
It came out exactly as I had hoped. I am very pleased :D
-
Cut out the control panel today, from 5/8" plywood.
-
I got my vinyl cutouts today for my cup holders and applied them.
-
Fall out and cup holders. What more could we ask for. Subbed this build. Looking good my friend.
-
this is going to be great cabinet. i like to see lots of planning.
-
I love that you're going all out on this. Attention to detail is great.
-
Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words.
-
how close are you to finishing the cabinet?
-
Haven't started building the cabinet itself yet. I had to special order the wood, and they said it will be 3 weeks. This is the third week, so it should be any time (I hope).

Those are cool. I love your theme. People will either get it or not.

I hope you plan to have a nuka cola in there somewhere.
Something Like this:

o and a pile of caps on the cp would be cool too

I did consider adding in the nuka-quantum bottle(s) in somehow, but couldn't figure out way a good way to do it. Any suggestions?
-
Well I have been a long time since my last post, mostly due to not being able to get the time to get over to my buddies to work on the cabinet.
I have managed to get the two sides cut, t-molding slots cut.
I also and I also routed the melamine layer off where the supports will attach this way I can use wood glue to glue them as well as screw them.
Here are a couple pictures of what I got done...sorry for the quality. they were taken with my friends cell phone.

I love the theme for this cabinet. Looking great so far!
PS, I noticed you bought from the Playdium Store - are you from Canada too? Ontario?
-
How did I miss this? It's looking really good. I like the quantum nuka cola idea too.
I have a similar cabinet in the early planning stages too, so ill be following this one closely ;)

Sounds like what Darthpaul did for his rotating Sith Holochron (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116929.msg1266862.html#msg1266862). ;D
