Title: Dynamo Cabinet Open Back
Post by: brained on March 08, 2013, 01:36:54 pm
Hi Guys, I'm going to mount a 21" monitor into a HS-5 Dynamo cab, but the problem is that I think I need to decase the monitor because its too bulky. Most Dynamo cabinets I've seen have an open back, is it safe to leave the back open with a decased monitor or should I cover the back?

I have a three year old, and I know children have a lot of creativity....

BTW, I'm going to decase the monitor during the weekend, I know this question has been asked 10,000 times, but do I really need to discharge the monitor before handling it?

TIA

I'm not an expert but I did work with a decased 32" sony trinitron a few weeks ago without discharging it (I read that they discharge themselves relatively quickly and the thing had been uplugged for 1.5 years).  One thing I would say is that you should absolutely have the back of the cab closed with a young child around... if they were to pull that anode cap off that could be extremely dangerous for little fingers.

edit: I meant that my specific TV (the 32" Sony Wega Trinitron) discharges itself quickly... not all CRT's do so you've gotta look up info on your particular CRT.

Where did you find the info about the discharge time?

I have a 27" in an hs5 decased, I expect a 21 would fit time still in the case.

If you open it up, discharge it.  I made a "chicken stick" to do this, a long ass PVC extension you add to a screwdriver to make a super lo g, insulated handle.

I mostly keep the back off (only the top half on an hs5) but made is up against a wall so it doesn't matter much.
