Title: Good bar stool height for typical Multicade / inexpensive local store sources?
Post by: snorpmeister on March 08, 2013, 01:12:23 pm
What's a good bar stool height for a stand-up (*not* a cocktail) Multicade. I'd play longer if I didn't have to stand. Also hoping to find a good deal on a stool at a local area store, whether it be a Big Lots, Garden Ridge, Walmart, or other budget store. Nothing fancy. Don't know if Garden Ridge is a national chain, but there's one by me with a huge selection of bar stools at reasonable prices. Can anyone recommend any specific national chain stores or brands.

Affordable / inexpensive to me is between $40 and $80. Again, don't need anything fancy looking. The aesthetics don't matter. Just something reasonably comfortable to extend game play.

Other stores in my area (Raleigh, NC) would be:

* Target
* Bed Bath and Beyond
* Kohls
* Harbor Freight
* Lowes and Home Depot
* Sams Club
* BJ's Warehouse

No local IKEA.
Probably plenty of other chain stores I can't recall.

Try Craigslist if you're in a reasonably sized metro area. Always good deals on barstools there.

You can get a black cushioned 24" folding stool at Wal-mart for like $18.

The wife and I got a pair of these last weekend for our Arcade Cabinet:

They are height adjustable (kids vs. adults playing) and were $50 each.

For full size cabs and pinball machines use a 30" stool...
For cocktail tables use an 18" stool/chair...

Thanks everyone. Not a personal fan of Craigslist. Prefer buying in a store. The Target and Craftsman ones look interesting. Any others folks have recently bought new in a local store? (easy to return if I don't like the product).

Thanks DrNick. Looks similar to the Target model. Anyone tried both and compared for comfort / how solid it feels, etc? For price, looks like the Target model is USD $50 and the Walmart one is USD $90.

Have you looked up any restaurant supply places in your area? I drive by one everyday (in chicago) that sells new and used. I picked up a pair of sweet solid 30" bar stools (31 1/2" to top of padding) used for $80. Plus spending the extra couple bucks on a commercial grade seat can go a long way.

good day.

Thanks Chopper. Hadn't thought of that but sounds like a great idea. I will have to check and see if there are any stores like this around.

If you like those ones that raise and lower I bought these last year and they look like the ones you were looking at.   They are alright for stability and the raising and lowering is nice.  At parties they get use but one thing is kids have a hard time climbing up on them.  I prefer the other stools personally though.

Definitely check out any thrift stores in your area.  I found a great retro, white leather bar stool, with a back on it, in excellent shape for less than $20.   Perfect height for a cab as well.

You also might want to check Spencer Gifts, if you have one in the area.  Every once in a while they have some novelty bar stools in the clearance section.  Big Lots usually has this kind as well ($25 - $30 range) in the tools/auto section.

Thanks DrNick, ArcadeNerd, JDFan, and RandyT.

Hadn't thought about thrift stores, but I *love* thift stores. Will have to start looking. We've got several good thrift stores in our area with furniture.

I'm thinking I might like one with a back on it, which would rule out the Walmart and Target models. A stool with a back is a request from my wife, so I better keep looking. :-)

Walmart do a few different styles so its probably worth having a look at their online catalogue. But I must say that Thrift stores and Yard sales would be the cheapest option.  I Was Stateside on holiday last year and my Brothers other half had issues with her legs so couldn't walk any distance.  Long story short did the rounds of the Thrift stores and picked up a fully leather, decent padded, very comfortable, wheelchair for $50,  The themeparks were charging about $10 a day to rent a piece of crap.  So yeah Thrift gets a Big Thumbs up from me.

I got mine at BigLots during a 20% off day for about 20 bux.  I use it in the garage.

They have several different designs with stupid sayings on them.

Otherwise, you can try Harbor Freight

When I move the arcade into the game-room (now under construction), I'll be getting some nice stools from Garden Ridge.  If you haven't been in there, they have about a million different stools of varying furniture grade-ed-ness.

Awe, dood.  Garden Ridge is the temple of bar-stools here in atlanta.  At our local store, they probably have a couple hundred different ones.  I'll be procuring stools from them when our basement starts getting more done.

I picked up the bar stool.....I don't know if it's that great an idea since the stool rotates so easily, so during gameplay the chair spins and makes it difficult to play.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. "Spoiled for choice" is a phase I'd use. I'd never heard of Garden Ridge before. Then a Target in Raleigh closed and a Garden Ridge replaced it.

So... are there any particular bar stool models available from Garden Ridge that you or others would recommend for a stand up cab? Or ones you got and didn't like (so I'd know what models to avoid)?

I also got these when they were $35 for the pair. I think Sears puts them on sale every now and again for the $35-40 range.

Found one to try at Big Lots that looked a lot like the "modern" style one from Target. Didn't like it and didn't see any there like the cushioned seat one that's been posted here. Went to a local Harbor Freight and also couldn't find one of the cushioned ones. They had what looked to be a "hard seat" one boxed up--nothing on display to try. I'll keep looking. Again, if anyone knows of a model they like that Garden Ridge sells, please post.

FWIW, my Coke bar stool was from Big Lots and it was in a box in the hardware aisle on the top of the shelf.  It doesn't swivel and the padding is about an inch thick.  My father in law got one from there that says "cowboy up" or something stupid like that.   The one at harbor freight is almost exactly the same, but it swivels.  Our HF store actually had one out.

Never did buy a bar stool but may ask for one this Christmas. Any other model suggestions? Open to online sources because that's how many shop for Christmas gifts these days.

This one from Amazon.com looks good, is around $50, and is 30" high:

Walk into NAPA, go up to the counter, grab a customer stool, walk out.
