Hi,
i have a little Question and can't find suitible answers while searchin so i hope you can help me:
I've build my first arcade Desktop Control, 2 Joysticks and 20 Buttons.
Now I got it all working but i think my Mapping of the Buttons is wrong.
At the moment ist like this:
JJ 1256
JJ 3478
JJ
JJ is my Joystick, the digits represent the Buttons.
But this Layout doesn't really match any game :D tried two other but didn't got it right.
So what is the "MAME" layout of buttons?
Thanks and sorry for my English ;)

Yup, this. Standard "Capcom" layout.

I had mine at

Was more comfortable for non-six button games. YMMV.

Interesting. For me, I prefer not reaching over a row of buttons for 1-3 button games. I guess we could do the PBJ method and map those games as
123
123
in MAME.

I do mine this way, too.
Nothing to remap when adding a new game unless it's something like Mortal Kombat (block on 2 and 5, low kick on 6) or Xybots (joystick twist counter-clockwise on 1, clockwise on 3, fire on 2, and start/superzapper on 4-6).

I had some crazy mapping when I first started, I had it like that for SNES games though. Now that I mostly just play mame I have gone for
123
456
And like yotsuya for 3 button games I just map 123 on both rows.

FWIW, I've been experimenting with a non-Capcom style 6 button layout like so (based on the Vewlix style layout):
1234
56
It's mainly for non-fighting games, so most games won't use the extra 5 and 6 buttons. But they are still there if needed, as the occational game uses them. I haven't found the 5 & 6 buttons get in the way at all of the top row.

You're not really 'reaching' over in the same way you're not reaching over the 'Z' and 'A' when you type 'Q' on a keyboard. Your fingers arch over and it's not noticeable at all while you're playing (it's like the bottom row doesn't exist.) Again, this preference was based on how my buttons were laid out with relation to the joystick (joystick was along the center line of a 3x2 straight button layout). It's not a one-size-fits-all answer. On some panels, main buttons on bottom row may be better.
And yes, the next panel/cab I make, I'm probably going to do the duplicate button method so that there's a 'choice' depending on the player's preference.
