Title: Acrylic bonding
Post by: SavannahLion on March 06, 2013, 12:36:43 am
Just came up with this idea while watching some music video or another.... Which I won't share >:D

Please don't assume this has anything to do with a CP or a marquee. It has nothing to do with either.

Follow along please...

Take two sheets of transparent acrylic and a sheet of opaque acrylic (http://www.eplastics.com/Plexiglass_Acrylic_Sheet_Black_and_White).

Now layer them in alternate layers eg TRANSPARENT<->OPAQUE<->TRANSPARENT

Here are the questions.

Can these three layers be bonded together with acrylic cement? What would happen? Would the borders just be muddled because of the melting of plastics? Would it not work due to some unforeseen circumstance?

Alongside those questions, is there such a thing as acrylic film? Super thin type of thing? Thinnest I've ever seen opaque acrylic is 1/8 or therabouts.

The best idea I came up with along this vein is to use two sheets of transparent then simply paint the facing sides of each. Except I can't think of any solution where I can bond the two surfaces together.  :-\

Would acetate sheets work for what you're trying?  They're thin enough and plastic.

Acetate will disappear with any acrylic solvent.

Laminating acrylic is not overly difficult and you will get good results as long as you are not laminating clear. Most acrylic glues will be suitable but there are specialised laminating glues. Put a puddle of glue down and clamp or put a big weight down to evenly spread the weight. Let all the glue ooze out and then clear up the edges. The edges can but beveled and polished up nicely.

Do a google image search for laminated acrylic.

I don't remember what kind of plastic we used in Industrial Arts in junior high. I remember being told the glue actually melted the plastic together. Was killer stuff, and as long as you got any bubbles out, totally incognito in clear applications. I made a project completely out of clear sheets.

Don't get me wrong it is posible to laminate clear acrylic but it is much harder to get acceptable results. In industrial applications it is done under vacuum.

Remember clear acrylic and glass are not 100% optically clear each layer will block some light.
