Title: Uhg! The difficulties never end.. (POWER SUPPLY/COMPUTER PROBLEM)
Post by: KeithPuetz on March 03, 2013, 04:28:13 am
I wired up the LEDs from my cp to the power supply and now I keep getting this message.
When I boot, I receive an error message: "The system fan has failed. Service PC to prevent damage to the system. Press <F2> to continue."

The fan is running so I don't know what this damn message is about. And the power supply is running the leds correctly.

I am wondering if I really need a new power supply or if I just messed something up when wiring the leds.
I used detatchable connectors to each wire, red, yellow, black. When I was connecting the connectors to the power supply I just cut all the wires off a connector of the power supply and attatched the wires I needed to connected and left the rest dangling (2-3). Could that be the thing set off the error? I swear the fan is running fan on the power supply is running fine (right now anyways.)

IF the power supply was fine before (i swear it was) and I did screw up the power supply how would I connect to the power supply any other way.
I thought what I did was the best idea as I didn't want to look for the correct gage inserts into the previous powersupply connectors, I said screw and it and decided to make my own.

As you know, I would REALLY like to get rid of this error message if it's the computer is fine. I don't want to have to plug in a keyboard EVERYTIME I want to play my arcade.

If you disconnect the led's does the message go away?

red blk  blk  yel
+5  -5  -12 +12

"left the rest dangling (2-3)" By your quote one could assume that you wired the led's to +5 and +12.

good day.

The note says 'System fan' not power supply fan. Did you disconnect any fans on the motherboard?

Have you tried hitting it with a bat or setting it on fire?

Yes.

No. All I did was hook up the leds to the power supply and I got the error message.
I looked up the error on Google, most people just replace the powers supply and it fixes the error so one could assume the error means the powersupply.
If I replace the power supply, it will cost me a hundred dollars. And I have no idea how to replace a power supply, and I could mess things up again.
Also if I replace the power supply, I will probably end up with the same error if I try to set up the leds again. Because I swear hooking up the leds caused the problem.
Do you think me cutting the power supply cords and leaving 2-3 dangling lead to the error?
Does it sound like I hooked up the leds incorrectly? Or is leaving some power supply cords dangling a bad idea? I left a black cord hanging, one yellow, and one red.

Could you post a photo of the wiring (on the powersupply & led ends) ?

I believe i took the wires from ONE connector, but I may have took one from a different one on accident. I'm not sure.
Just so you guys know the reason why the new connectors are no longer on there is because they uncrimped when I disconnected them to take the computer out of the cabinet to take a picture.

Maybe I pulled the yellow wire too far?

I have no idea how to rewire the mobo fan.

Does that fan in the photo, on the CPU, spin when you power up?

Yes that fan does spin.
There is a third fan that I can see without taking anything apart. And that fan does not spin. I just noticed it now.
It's not cooling anything important, it just looks like it's meant to pull hothair out of the case. But, I leave my case open, so it's not that much of an issue, and I wish I could take off the error message.
I heard other people have tried to disable the message through the bios, but with no luck.
What do you guys think is the problem? That third external fan I am talking about or the MOBO fan?

Try disconnecting that one from the board, then reboot

What colors are the two wires you have hooked to your LEDs? Black wires are ground, red is +5 and yellow is +12. What is the voltage requirement of your LED set?

Yotsua. Before I read your message I tried looking to see what was unplugged. And NOW the damn mobo fan doesn't work.
I ---smurfing--- hate computers I hardly touched anything going in. Maybe the one time I tested to see if that mobo fan worked it did just by chance? I don't know.
Anyways, it doesn't work now. And I am frusterated as hell. I just lost my job and I was just MINUTES away from getting this damn arcade to working  :soapbox:

I am so frusterated at this point in time. JENBRIWJE(RUJ%RWQOR()UJW()ERJ$R()UJR*(JWOJWIOFHBIOASRH

+5 for joysticks, +12 for buttons.

I suggest disconnecting everything and putting it back as it was before you got the error (reconnect where you cut the cable) , if it goes away, its what youve connected
another thing where did you cut the wires to get the supply?only i can see TWO bared red cables in the picture it was the last in the link was it?, as far as i know all those connectors are looped and if the loop is broken everything after the break will fail to get power, you had a lot of spare connectors, would have been easier to get a connector to fit it and just plug it in instead of cutting the wire

I have TWO unworking fans. Just reconnecting the wires I cut wont fix the problem. And I swear the power supply connector I cut was spare. It was NOT connected to anything. I think I unplugged something when I cut the wires not that I cut the wrong wire..

not all the connectors are used in order, so it will if you`ve cut into the loop (at an unused one) and the NEXT connector in the line or the one after that is used (can only guess with what youve shown), is was what i was thinking, Personally I`d reconnect everything as it was when it was definately working, then cut that cable tie and pull the cables (gently) out if and have a good look, check all plug connectors are fitted , to eliminate a couple possible causes, was just an idea, wasnt trying to be clever, the fans are probably 5v and i see in the pic a "break" in the 5v (red cable)

and If you do get it working after that buy a 4pin molex connector and just plug it in (example of something you can use below) you have no need to cut any wires (wish i was that lucky on my box of bollocks :) )

Well, if you DO go get another power supply, don't spend $100 to do so:

here`s what i saw from your pic, would still get a connector even when you get it working, probably explains what i`m guessing at better than spending hours typing it :)

It got the external fan to work! But.. I still had the error message.
And the mobo fan was still not working. And than I turned it off and on a couple times to see if I could get the fan to jump start now the computer doesn't turn on.

*EDIT*
I tried it again and it turned on. I turned it off right away. I don't know if the computer is screwed or if it's fine as long as I get the fan fixed..

Keith-

The CPU fan plugs directly into the motherboard, not the power supply. Can you verify that the CPU fan is plugged into the motherboard?

IT'S ALIVE!

There was a tiny cord on the fan keeping it from spinning.  :banghead:  :laugh2:
