Title: Circling back around with MAME
Post by: Zeenon on February 20, 2013, 08:18:15 am
So when I started this journey about 5 months ago all I wanted to do was play some old 80's games and now it's turned into a small hobby (especially building a cab just for this purpose) :). I think however I skipped some basics because I was given 0.146 romset with the CHD's and MAMEUI32/64. So.....

1) I recently purchased LEDblinky and it needs a mame.xml file? How do I generate this?

2) Is there a way to verify the rom set?

3) Is it worth it to update the rom set?

I'm scared to run anything against what I have since it's working with no issues, but that is my fault for placing the carriage before the horse.

You should be able to see what doesn't work, typically it will have a red box beside the ROM name. Stuff that works will be green or have an icon/picture.

If you have the right directory set in your config I believe right clicking on the ROMs and running an audit will do the trick.

I wouldn't think you would break anything that works by running that.

1) not sure.  My front end (Mala) generates mine.  A program called Romlister can generate one and weed out games you don't want while you're at it.
    Someone else will probably have a better answer.

2) clrmamepro  (if you were given a complete full set, it's probably fine)

3) Not from v.146 in my opinion.  Only a few games added.  Look at the release notes for v.147 & 148 to see what.  Nothing I would update for.

Sounds like you're set up better than most beginners.
I'd recommend downloading the standard MAME v.146 binary at www.mamdev.org (http://www.mamdev.org) and learning how to launch games without MAMEUI.
Then you can move on to choosing a front end and will understand how it is launching MAME.

mame -listxml > mame.xml

I was playing around with clrmamepro on a backup set of my 146 ROM's and was wonder if I need to go from 147u1 -> u2 -> u3 -> u4 -> 148 -> 148u1 is order to update?

On the backup set I went from 146 to 148 and plugged in all the files it was missing to get a complete 148 set, but I'm wondering if I should of done 147 first?
