Title: Thoughts on Possible Project (Slim DK)
Post by: CWorley on February 18, 2013, 08:51:50 am
Not even close to being done with my current project and I'm obviously thinking about what to do next.  With inspiration coming from this "Super Slimline" upright project:  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,115189.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,115189.0.html)  I was thinking about doing a similar super slim cabinet but Donkey Kong style.  I've included a sketch of what I think the dimensions could be.

I have the depth right now at about 16 inches.  I'd like to shave another inch or two off, but I'm not sure that's possible.  I'm not sure I would go with a DK theme, but I think I'd at least stay with Dk colors.

What do you guys think?

If you're going that thin, it's going to be unstable as hell. You'll almost certainly need to mount to the wall or find some other means so as to prevent it from falling over.

I think it looks cool though. I always love slim cabs.

+1

Also, if doing DK, you may want to make it a little thicker to accommodate the monitor tilt like the original cabinet.  Also, if your doing a pc and mame, 12" give or take with your design depth may be pretty thin for a PC to shove in there, depending on the case.

Regarding the pc, I would definitely not use a case and just mount the components inside the cabinet.  There shouldn't be a space problem for that at all.

Regarding the stability of the cabinet, ripsnort didn't seem to have an issue with it with his cab and it was only 13" from front to back at it's widest point.  I would definitely anchor it to the wall though to be on the safe side (kids).

I wouldn't want to go wider than 16" since keeping it super slim is one of the main goals of this project.  The monitor will only be slight tilted.

Cheers!

I like the concept of it looking like the front sliced off a full size DK cab.

When you say you don't want to go wider than 16" did you mean depth or are you going skinny in both directions?
Not sure I like that concept as much.

If you want to get crazy and only plan on running MAME, you could use a big widescreen and then use the HLSL effects in MAME to make it appear that the screen is tilted.  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119079.msg1261348.html#msg1261348 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119079.msg1261348.html#msg1261348)

If you put an upright monitor in a nintendo cab it kind of ceases be be a nintendo cab for me.  I'm not sold on the design myself but I think there is merit in exploring it further and seeing what you can come up with.

Badmouth, I meant purely depth with not going over 16 inches.  I would plan on making the cab wide enough for two players.

Le Chuck, I compeltey understand your take on the upright monitor.  But since the main point of the project is a very slim profile, so I'm not sure I can get around that.

Here is a pic by Paul Olsen using both the bezel art and tilt options in HLSL on an LCD monitor.

I think it looks pretty convincing.

I had missed that, pretty convincing is right.  Wow.
