Ok, I'm still rocking a 21" Hitachi Multisync from 1996 in my cab. From my reading here it seems that I'm looking for some Holy Grail in MAMEing.....a tri mode 25" digital monitor that can automatically switch resolutions and remember settings.
What models should I be looking for to buy used as I start scouring eBay and Craigslist?

Yes, you are right! I believe we talked this morning!
As I mentioned and am repeating this for others..
- no the 24.8" or 25" tube has been out of production for some time.
- you may be lucky to find a distributor that has had stock sitting for some time, but not likely.
- Yes if you are using Mame and want to switch between all the Native resolutions ( CGA and mid res) to VGA then it is a must to be digital. That is why any time we sold our tri-res to someone running Mame we cautioned them to stay in one resolution. Preferably 640X480 -31Khz-VGA. This will avoid the need to make many adjustments to size and position etc. when changing resolutions.
- When going the LCD route if you want to do all the resolutions, beware that many LCD's (especially retail) do not accept them... in fact as "Standard res" is not really "standard" select one that does 15.1khz to 16.3Khz.
Be sure you have a good viewing angle,brightness and contrast. Of course response time need to be fast, be careful there as it is quoted in many ways. Sometimes just rise, rise to fall rise to video and on and on.
- Also be sure you can adjust picture size position etc and store them, many LCD's do not.
Hope this helps all, we are very proud of our product and yes it is more expensive than a retail LCD, but they do all that. Open frame and idustrial grade.

Yeah, I knew that, but I was hoping someone knowledgeable would post specific brands/models to search for used. Some of the descriptive info makes it hard to tell if it's a tri mode or dual mode, or if it's analog or digital.

Just get a presentation monitor. Loads more of 'em were made, they're build like tanks, and often they're pretty cheap.

A couple of follow up questions, if you don't mind. What's the difference between a regular monitor and a presentation monitor? I tried googling it, but nothing stood out. Are some 25" presentation monitors capable of 15k? If so, do you know of specific makes and models I should be looking for?

That's absurd. The whole point of running MAME on an arcade monitor is to get true low resolution output. If you're going to lock it into a single resolution, you should just use a PC monitor or an LCD (or possibly even a TV), not an arcade monitor. Buying a $500+ tri-res arcade monitor and only running it at 640x480 is a crime against nature.
