Title: Problem with redefined controls resetting to default

My cabinet has controls for two players but I wanted to be able to play 4 player games with my sons. So as a semi-solution I have installed a receiver to allow wireless conection of a couple of xbox 360 controllers. Everything seemed fine at first, the controllers show in MAME as joy 1 and joy2 so I redefined the control inputs for players 3 and 4 in MAME to allow control for the Xbox controllers and it worked quite well. Unfortunately when you use the cabinet without the xbox controllers turned on MAME does not give any control options for joy1 & joy2, presumably because there is no joysticks connected. This I understand and seems fair enough. Unfortunately when I subsequently try to use the Xbox controllers again all the joy1 and joy2 controls have reset to the original defaults. Hopefully someone out there can point me in the right direction, thanks in advance.

Setup your controls and set default.Ini to read only. Mame resets controls when connecting new devices.

Don't know if I'm being a bit stupid but I am unable to find a file called default.ini

At the risk of sounding like Captain Obvious, do you have view hidden/system files enabled?
