So, I decided to take a break from my ps1 & dreamcast trick method at the swapmeet since now my collection has increased to 328 games in the span of only a few months.. and take on this new hobby at the swapmeet. Looking for old VHS tapes people used to record tv shows/cartoons back in the 80s & 90s. Mainly just for the obscure stuff that was never released on dvd and also for the nostalgic commercials.
Anyways, I picked up one for 50 cents that read "teenage mutant ninja turtles II & OC news" ..I fig'd ehh, maybe there's some good commercials in between.. popped it in the vcr when I got home and there was some funny stuff like this joe dirt lookin karate instructor with a epic mullet doing a demonstration on the news.. But what's crazy is I get about halfway through TMNT2 only to find the rest is recorded over with a family vacation to Disneyland in 1998. And then after filming their day at the park they go to some hotel party at Disneyland... It's so weird and creepy watching some random family enjoying their trip and acting all goofy.. But it makes this hobby even more interesting! Never know what you're going to find on one of these tapes lol
Anyone else have/hear any similar stories of finding weird stuff recorded on a VHS tape they picked up?

Is this people you know or just some random strangers?

I was thinking it would be interesting to load them onto youtube and see if anyone in them happens to come accross it.
That lead me to another thought.
Who owns the rights to the video? Could you legally use it for commercial purposes?

Creepy? I find it abso-humorous that, whether the program content is fictional, people watch anything in any medium to essentially gawk at people, and yet think such weird things in cases like this. Hell, I was hoping maybe the story was going to turn into, 'then they went to this hotel and.....' or 'hotel party and....' and something like Bachelor Party happened, or better. Sheesh.

actually im sort of interested in this. What's this trick?
also: i used to buy audiotapes at flea markets and whatnot. I'd always look for the "blank" cassettes or ones with scotch tape over the holes. load e'm up and see what was on them. usually it was crappy songs recorded from the radio but sometimes...
1:) pre-teen telephone converstion. (hilarious as all hell talking about nothing for soooooo long)
2:) gameboy game music. (including such hits as double dragon and tetris) i found about 3 or 4 of these over the few years i did this
3:) SNES game music (bought in the same box as a gameboy tape i bought at an earlier date. i had bought up all the "blank" tapes)
4:) house sound (somebody hit record on a machine and just left it. you could hear people talking unintelligibly in the far reaches of the house. someones poor attempt at eavesdropping i think.)
5:) house sound 2 (mostly a television in the back ground randomly you'd hear girls screaming outside playing...kinda creapy)
6:) random sound (this tape had a weird high and low pitched 60hz buzz? static? to it with some other random sounding static mixed in.)
i stopped buying tapes because my player crapped out and i never got around to fixing it. (read as bothered to) but now i'm getting all nostalgic again.

What, that his ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- is funny, and I think so? Seriously, I thought it was ---smurfin--- great. It'd be even more awesome if he did one or some of those. If he was inclined an all.....I wouldn't be......

No I have no clue who these people are. They didn't even look like the person at the swapmeet who sold me the vhs tape so who knows where it came from.. It's just weird to me, finding cherished memories for 50 cents..

:laugh2: That's so cool about the cassette tapes.. and now that you mention it, I even remember recording myself on a cassette tape doing karaoke to my favorite songs when I was in the 3rd grade.. I think I was using one of those Talkboys from home alone 2.. wonder where that tape's at now.
As for that PS1 & Dreamcast trick, I decided to post it in the consoles thread :)

I used to do that too with cassettes as a kid. Just record random stuff, listen to it, then record over it with more random stuff.

...and they call themselves "The Aristocrats"

I'm not privy to understand the inuendi in the above last two comments.....

I taped Strike Force (ABC). This was a year before cable came to the neighborhood, and two or three years before getting a VCR.

This site, http://www.sweetthunder.org/tapes/ (http://www.sweetthunder.org/tapes/), is an mp3 archive of cassette tapes found at thrift stores and other places. Interesting stuff.

That is vaguely creepy but I can't nail down exactly why.
