How wide do I need to go to have enough from 2 joys 8 buttons each and a trackball?? ???
-
x-arcade tankstick is 28.75" and comfortable.
It's a starting point.
-
Have you used a tankstick --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type--? I planned on going 2 rows of 4 :dunno
-
Assuming that you are having each players buttons layed out in 2 rows of 4, then I would say 28" minimum, but wider would be more comfortable.
-
My cab is 26 7/8, the cp is 28 1/2. When I play with my buddy, feels like you are crowded. I dont wanna have it hang over to much. Dont wanna be squished either.

Yeah, I dont want that! :hissy:

IMHO, and I'm still somewhat a newb, but I did experiment quite a bit on CPs....
You can fit a full 4x2 row 2 player controls minus trackball on about a 24-26" panel.
It will still feel a *bit* cramped for two full sized Adults.
with Trackball, and giving it a bit of spacing, I'd say something like 32-34" would probably be ideal.
-
The 4x2 2 player layout will fit easily on a 23" wide panel. My dedicated 25" monitor Neo Geo only has like a 23" or 24" wide panel (it is actually narrower than some of my classic era games) and I have never really felt cramped playing 2 player on it.
Going too wide is way more common than going too narrow. Konami's 4 player cabinets were only 37" wide and Gauntlet (4 player) is less than 30" wide.

Having seen your posts, I defer to your greater experience.
When I built the Redline for my sister's kids, I experimented quite a bit, and wound up with a an external width of 25 1/2 inches, which once you counted space lost under the CP due to bracing worked out to 24". internally.

The CP worked well for the kids, but if I were building for myself I'd probably go something like 28" wide. (I'm 6'6 and pushing 300 lbs)
My .02.....

I am truly hoping that 19.5" will support 2 players with 6 buttons each. But we shall see.
-
I'd go an even 3 feet wide, but that's just me. I wouldn't do under 30 inches, though.

The biggest problem really when you make your control panel too wide and deep is when you move to the next level and start picking up real games. You end up with this one beast of a cabinet that is a way wider and deeper than everything else and ends up being really difficult to incorporate into a dense gameroom. I know, as I have a too wide, too deep mame cabinet that continually foils my efforts to find the PERFECT game room layout.

30" should be plenty wide for two adults to play comfortably.

Mine is 37" wide (was originally a konami 4-player cab), and I find that to be perfect for 2 players.
I agree with Paige though; it doesn't fit in well with the dedicated stuff. I have always kept it in my office for that reason, instead of in the garage with the others.

Was just thinking, how wide is a NFL blitz cp?
