Finally. (http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=302526&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1)
It won't make Asteroids look original....I don't know why they took a pic of that....but color and overlay vectors should be ki-ller.

I'm just stupefied no one has gone apeshit over this. What I've been waiting an age for.
-
I am hoping to have my cabinet finished in a few weeks, so I am really looking forward to this. I just ordered a better video card so I will be ready to play. :applaud:

This does look pretty good. The thread is a bear to get through for reasons I won't mention.
I haven't been following this project, what's the back story? Is there a release timeline, will it be stand alone or is it going to be incorporated into a new MAME release?
-
Man those look great. Very cool!
-
very nice...

Oh, ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, it exploded since I was there. Arby said to krick that an ATI HD4550 wouldn't cut it. Hmmmm. With my Geforce 6800, I get good performance on my arcade multisync at 1024x768, but not above that.
-
I just got a GTX 650 Ti, so I hope that should handle anything I throw at it with the HLSL in MAME.
-
Yep, saw this in a version control branch 2 weeks ago in the check in comments, but was like, nah, couldn't possibly be working yet. This makes me sofa king happy!!

This makes me sofa king happy!!
Yes this is a wish come true for me, had a few of them recently.

Hahahahah. Reminds me of funny 80s small business commercials - for example, Cal Worthington Ford.

Oh my god......all these years I thought they were saying '---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- cow'.....I could never figure it. Still sounds like it, too, I have to listen real close to pick out the real words. Turns out I'm not crazy. (Well, in that regard.....) Note the list of comments.

...so, has anyone actually compiled and used a build of MAME that contains the new HLSL vector filter goodness? Bueller?

I haven't visited MooglyGuy's WIP page, but I expect something to be by .150, maybe .149, which will be soon.

Reading through the changelog for .148 it looks like MooglyGuy has already laid some of the groundwork and just left some menus disabled. There isn't a link to do a custom compile at this time but I'm with you, and hope that in the next couple of releases they flush out this new functionality.

So for all of you that have been waiting for some movement on this as much as I am...
Mame 148u5 has added some extra settings to the ini file as seen below, and I can confirm that they do indeed have an effect :) .
I`ve run out of time to test more so hopefully some of you can find some cool values.
# VECTOR POST-PROCESSING OPTIONS
#
vector_time_scale 0.0
vector_time_period 0.1
vector_length_scale 0.9
vector_length_ratio 4.0
#
# BLOOM POST-PROCESSING OPTIONS
#
vector_bloom_scale 0.3
raster_bloom_scale 0.25
bloom_lvl0_weight 1.0
bloom_lvl1_weight 0.21
bloom_lvl2_weight 0.19
bloom_lvl3_weight 0.17
bloom_lvl4_weight 0.15
bloom_lvl5_weight 0.14
bloom_lvl6_weight 0.13
bloom_lvl7_weight 0.12
bloom_lvl8_weight 0.11
bloom_lvl9_weight 0.10
bloom_lvl10_weight 0.09
so increasing vector bloom and decreasing the beam width has a nice effect.
-
Wow those screen shots look really good. I bet they look better in person.
I will definitely have to try these out.

Wow, looking sharp. Gonna have to play around with this. Glad it's finally out!

tried major havoc on this build on two different pc's and it crashed hard on both of them a minute into the game.

Yeah.. there are still some growth pains - Star Wars will sometimes crash when the death star blows up too (with or without HLSL active).
This is logged at MameTesters already and as I was typing this, a fix went into SVN for it.

If you are getting errors, you need to make sure whatever binary you downloaded has also the new *.fx files needed in the HLSL folder. If not, things will not work.
-
Built them myself, but you were right. Thanks for the tip!

Definitely want this on my Omega Race cab...since...well...it's an Omega Race cab. :)
-
Yeah, long time coming, but right the ---fudgesicle--- on! The stock settings blow chunks, and I wasn't about to diddle around with all those things. Some good settings.
-
Yeah, the stock settings are pretty bad. Especially for the B&W vectors. Need more tweaking!
-
Awesome! I have an empty cab waiting for a vector-dedicated project...
-
I was wrong. Those settings posted above are stock. Don't know why they posted 'em. My problem was something else. AND the stock settings didn't produce anything with my set-up, so I changed vector_bloom_scale to .4, and it got purdy. Still had the problem, though, so apparently nothing wrong with MAME. I'm waiting for 149, to try again, though.
-
MAME .149 is released! Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but among the release notes are:
-Added better .ini defaults for HLSL, and hooked up bloom sliders. [MooglyGuy]
Anyone give it a try?
-
I downloaded the MAME 149 binary but all I get is "Loading Complete" then it kicks back out. I have some ROMs in the older but never get a list to choose them. I get the same thing if I run it from command line.

unless you're talking about a MAMEUI issue due to bad / missing roms then I assume you've been hit by the same problem as everybody else
the official MAME 0.149 32-bit binaries are broken.
there are correct ones one my page

(see the non-ume part if you don't want the full combined project)

Yes. the initial binaries offered were flawed for 32-bit, unfortunately. Everything has been updated and fixed on mamedev.org, so you can obtain working binaries now.

did they ever incorporate the timing fixes for Robotron so it played almost like it does on a real machine? I've been watching the release notes for the last few releases and don't recall seeing its inclusion.
not that it matters personally since I have a JROK multi-williams board now, but I'm curious and can't imagine why they would put off adding it, if indeed they did. or maybe I just missed it.
-
Thanks to the bloom & glow & HLSL awesomeness, the MESS/UME vectrex emulation now looks really, really freaking authentic. Nicely done.
-
Are the defaults good or did you need to tweak them a bit?
-

I didn't touch them, but since there's no accounting for taste, your preferences may differ. Apparently, between 0.148u5 and 0.149 they added sliders in the menus, but I didn't think to look for them before I left for work today.

I'm unaware of any timing fixes? Are you referring to the fixes to the "corner bug" crash? Do you have a link regarding these fixes?

Tried Asteroids on 0.149 tonight. Looks good. Tempest does too, but the sound on Tempest is messed up--even with the HLSL effects turned off. Anyone having the same experience?

Got to make sure that HLSL isn't causing your game to run under 100% speed. Use F11 to show the emulation speed and see. Pokey emulation not too long ago became much more accurate and demanding for Atari games, so many of them run a bit slower then earlier versions did.
-
So I'm presuming Tempest works for you?
-
Not working so well for me. I downloaded the 0.149 binaries and ran a few games including non-vector games, and all I get is a couple giant white triangles that fill most of the screen and then the screen blanks out and I have to Esc to exit. Tried it with my current mame.ini as well as moving it aside so it would use the defaults. Re-installed 0.148 binaries and it works just fine. Any ideas? I just downloaded from mamedev a few minutes ago, so it's not the initial bad binaries that were originally there that's the problem.
-

I didn't love the 149 default HLSL settings. I think they were better than the ones in 148u5. I still think they look very washed out. I took my favorite 148 settings and incorporated them into the mame.ini of 149. I like how they look. I like the bloom effect for vector games, but not sold on it yet for raster ones. I think the raster games that are primarily back backgrounds, classics like Donkey Kong, PacMan, Galaga, etc aren't too bad with the raster bloom, but I don't think it helps games with full screen backgrounds like Congo Bongo, Metal Slug, etc. You can easily turn down or off the raster bloom in the ini or tweak it in the sliders section.

Yeah, the default settings are a bit much. I can say that the machine I first played Metal Slug on had a monitor with some very weird issues, and the default settings for 0.149 immediately reminded me of them -- 20 years later. I remember a very long phosphor hang-time on that monitor, and the new default settings do not disappoint in that regard.

video card / drivers? any 'HLSL is broken' report needs that information as a bare minimum so that we can see if it's just you or everybody with that config ;)

Graphically it (Tempest) looks fine for me. It's just the sound that's off. There is sound, but it's vague and distorted. This is with HLSL on or off. Its the same in both the official build and my own build (both x64).

I have an older computer. I'm starting to think it's probably just worth me staying on .148. I am having this problem even with hlsl disabled. My computer is:
Intel Celeron 2.70GHz
Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
Video BIOS Version 2897
Intel Graphics Miniport Driver Version 6.14.10.3943
Running Windows XP.
Not sure if this is all the info or where I should go to give anything more. Attached is a screenshot of what I get when I launch any game, and my mame.ini.

Yeah, it's pretty nice now in color vecs, though still not as nice as AAE. You have to create tricks to get trail-y shots in Asteroids Deluxe, and it's still not great. Raster HLSL is a little wonky now, too. Vector blossom is nice, but I can hold off a bit. I'll have to address those other points later....

Yeah color vectors don't look bad, but there are some oddities with interactions of the glow and multiple vectors. Black and white vectors look OK as long as the don't make heavy use of intensity. Solar Quest looks good, but AD and Star Castle look bad. I'm sure there are some tweaks in the settings that will help, but right now I can't get Star Castle to show a different intensity when the shield is damaged, for example.
Still, it's a pretty good first attempt and even if it doesn't look as good as AAE it's already better just from not blacking out after 25 mins and not having all of AAEs controller and orientation issues.
-

I never had any of those problems......
-
Run AAE for 25 mins. Maybe not all games, but Asteroids for sure will go dark.
Analog control? Forget it.
Rotate a vertical game? Forget it.
There are a bunch of other little emulation issues (extra ship shows up in Asteroids after the first game, star field wrong in Tempest, missing sounds in Star Castle and Solar Quest, etc), but those are the big ones.
AAE was pretty awesome but like most non-MAME emulators, it was eventually abandoned. The source was released (or some version of it) but no one has taken it over and no one is likely to. Still looks better than MAME, but MAME plays better.

Depends what games you care for. Outside of the big three and a special favorite (Astdelux, tempest, and bzone - and Black Widow) I don't much care. Star Wars would be a nice bonus, but not critical to me. Rotating, while more common now, is still pretty uncommon. Still, could possibly....probably....write a simple bat to make the video hardware rotate the desktop on game load. And it might not bork anything.
-
Well, I can't complain too much. AAE is what got me into vectors and now I own a Tempest and an AD. I played a fair amount of Solar Quest on AAE, but I always felt like I was missing out because the spinner games didn't work right (TAC/Scan, Zektor, etc). I guess I'm just glad the MAME HLSL effects are coming along since they're likely to be supported for awhile.

Anyone else getting a black screen when running a vector rom through .150 with HLSL enabled?.
I can run raster roms fine with HLSL but not vectors and can toggle the black screen on and off with CTRL + Alt + F5 (HLSL shortcut).
This is with the .150 HLSL files, is it just me or are the new vector effects broken with .150?.

Yes, vector HLSL is broken in 0.150. Haze has written a post about new features in 0.150 (a very nice read, as always, thank you!), and vector HLSL brokenness is also mentioned:
