Im building a bartop, and want to keep in a specific budget. SO going AMD will (possibly) net me the most. My last MAME build was an Intel E8400 OC to 3.8 or so and it ran .. Gauntlet Legends? I think at that time it was the killer game (or the one I gauged by). I had it running fine. Im wondering if there is a place to get benchmarks or such for say AMD Quad-Core A8-5600K 3.6GHz Radeon HD 7560D or the AMD FX-6300 Six-Core 3.5GHz AM3+ Processor
both CPUS are about $100 and the MB are about$50..
I would like Guantlet Legends to play.. So again.. anybody tell me if either of those CPU's will cut it? There is a thread here about them.. but no stats, or actual answers.. just 'should".
thanks

hate to bring up an topic older then dirt, but nobody using a AMD in a MAME build? AMD is cheap, and would like to try them as a current Intel chips are about $230 (or does somebody know which intel chip in the $100 range that might fit my needs). My requests:
MAME - Gauntlet Dark Legacy playable
Dreamcast EMU (null DLC) playable
ePSXe playable
as my old post says a E8400 OC to 4Ghz did all this.. but I'm so far out of the game nowadays on budget chips. I have a 2500K OC in my current rig and it screams through stuff, but I really want to keep costs down so dont want to by a $230 CPU and all that goes with it..

the AMD chips are cheap but they're in no way competitive as far as MAME is concerned, the developers who have benched them found the performance to be closer to that of much older generations of chips. You get what you pay for.
-
My old AMD Phenom II x4 965 plays everything I've thrown at it including NFL Blitz and Gauntlet Legends at 100%.
Dark Legacy plays smooth and stays around 100%. Plays nicely.
Processor is can take a beefy overclock to.
Stock is 3.6Ghz and I've had it as high a 4Ghz without a hiccup.
Games were tested at 3.6Ghz.

newer AMDs cant keep up with older Intels. Whats your budget, and are you lookin for a CPU Mobo combo, or you need RAM too?

Newer AMD like the FX series runs rings around Intel. Get yourself a trinity chipset, which will handle the most demanding games. I have one and it plays EVERYTHING. Make sure you don't cheap out on ram. 4gb at the very least.
I'm all for Intel, but for this hobby you can get away with a lot less.
Note to Mods: Can we refer these topics to arcade misc in future?

Now if you don't want TOP level performance, the AMD is a good buy 200 for the amd chip in that article, and the intel chip is $300 So you get ALMOST the same power for $100 less but no it does not run circles, it doesn't even get 5 feet ahead

These comparisons are for standard PC games, not emulation through MAME. MAME is optimized to run on an Intel processor and will run much better on Intel than AMD. Look at Haze's response - he's a developer. He knows what he is talking about.
This is a direct quote from the MAMEUI Help section: MameUI64 + Vista64 + C2D chips is the best current combination for MameUI gaming on the Windows platform

You confuse me. You say the comparisons are wrong then agree with me.
-
Yeah, sorry about the confusion Malenko. What I meant is these comparisons are not accurate for MAME. The chart shows that the AMD is actually somewhat comparable to the Intel....... for PC games. When you are talking MAME it isn't even close..

Yeah I thought the SkyRim results was a good example of that. SkyRim relies more on CPU than GPU, so Intel crushes the AMD on that. Sadly I couldnt find any MAME comparison pages.

Extremely marginal at best. Again we are looking for a cheaper chip, and at that price it runs circles around Intel. Haze & the mamedevs code bloat, and only for that reason he recommends higher end CPUs. Again it is marginal for the cost. When I buy a cheaper CPU I am not wanting the best frame rates on high end games like Skyrim or BF4. You guys are missing the point entirely. :banghead:
-
I am running an AMD quad @ 4 Ghz, 8 GB DDR3, AMD 7850 2GB DDR5, SSD and I can play everything... Blitz, Ridge Racer, Cotton Boomerang, Die Hard Arcade, etc.
We play PC games on it as well, Tekken vs SF, Mortal Kombat, Super SF IV AE, MUGEN, etc.
Intel is superior here, sure, but can you play just about everything regarding emulation with a nice AMD system..? Absolutely.
I priced out what I wanted and the comparable Intel system would have been ~$150 more due to cpu, SLI/CF capable mobo, ram, etc.
With that said the next build will likely have an i7 just to mix things up a bit.

AMDs are cheaper because Intels perform better. OP is talking about an AMD Quad-Core A8-5600K, finding a comparable Intel chip to match that, and the price difference is going to be negligible. By your same argument, the newest AMD chip that costs $600 barely out performs a $300 Intel CPU so the Intel chip is better there too.
For me its Cost vs Worth, not whatever is cheaper. I used to be a BIG AMD guy, had high hopes. For a long stretch they were the superior CPU, but thats just not the case anymore (to me).

Intel pentium 3.2 ghz dual cores based off haswell are available for that price. I bought a G3420 for 60ish on sale. Or. 75 without.

I'm running G3220 Haswell 3.0Ghz and can do Gauntlet Legends at 99-100% running 640x480 w/ 22Khz audio. Still testing though, I need to play it to a boss fight and that will let you know if it drags down or not.
