Title: Question on interlaced resolutions picked by GM
Post by: repetto74 on January 02, 2013, 03:11:02 pm
Hi,

This is not really an issue but I think it's the right section to post this.

I am using Groovymame with a standard 15khz horizontal monitor. All my games are launching fine and games with more that 256 lines are launched in their native resolution (top and bottom slightly cropped but games runs at native res with no flicker so this is what I want).

I noticed that the game Kangaroo is a 512x240 V and GM will pick 768x512i for it. The result is terrible, the background is flickering so much you would get a headache within minutes...
Is there any better non flicker resolution for this game? If yes how can I tell GM to pick another resolution?
Thanks
Rick

Title: Question on resolutions picked by GM for most of the Psikyo games

Hi,

With a standard horizontal 15khz monitor I noticed that GM will pick generally a 664x496i resolution for those vertical games (their native resolution is 320x224 V) but this will give a flickery image on screen.
I understand that stretch is necessary for a V games with 320 lines but just wondering if there is a better setting here to have less flicker?? ??? ???

Thanks
Rick

Hi repetto74,

First of all, sorry for merging your topics but I thought they made more sense together as they're both about GM running interlaced modes, which by the way is not a particular game issue but actually a feature ;)

Interlaced modes are used as a way to provide the best possible resolution for your monitor, when a native progressive resolution is not a possibility due to your monitor specs. This allows for the best possible detail, at the cost of some flicker, let's say it's the less bad solution if you can't physically rotate your monitor (in case of vertical games which often lead to this problem on standard monitors).

The problem is, some monitors just suck when it comes to displaying interlaced modes. Sometimes it's the graphic card.

For these cases you can just disable the -interlace option in mame.ini. This will force GM to always pick progressive modes. See how these games look when stretched over a progressive resolution and decide which method looks better for your particular monitor.

Hi Calamity,

Thanks a lot  :applaud: disabling interlace option is giving really a better result on screen.
For Kangaroo actually the only issue is related to colors (the red trees around are dark red with some shadings around which I do not think this is visible on the original)

For Psikyo games this is really much better (stretched but no flicker at all) :notworthy:
