Welcome to the 2nd Annual BYOAC User Choice Awards Nomination Thread!
Following the wonderful response to last year's UCAs we are back to recognize the most innovative, well executed, original, and fun builds completed in 2012 across a broad range of categories. Feel free to nominate more than one project and don't feel obligated to nominate something for every category. Your participation is paramount to having another great event so let us know what knocked your socks off.
To increase longevity and ensure that the BYOAC UCA process remains above reproach a board has been selected to handle administrative matters. This year's board is chaired by Yotsuya, DaOld Man, BobA, DrVenture, and Le Chuck who will use the UCA account to open UCA threads and post any administrative actions. UCA is a non voting entity.
The Rules:
- No user can win the same category two years running. Ms. America rules apply, you have to pass the tiara. That doesn't mean users can't nominate a project deserving of praise, they just shouldn't get bent out of shape when it doesn't make the final voting thread.
- Forum Member Contribution category will not be held this year. DaOld Man will wear the sash for another year whether he wants to or not. EDIT 1/2/2013 - Due to popular demand, this catergory will be open for this year.
- Categories must have at least 3 valid seconded entries to remain categories. Those that don't will be awarded honorable mentions at the end of the nomination window.
- Categories with 6 or more entries may be split up into sub categories providing that the breakdown allows two complete new categories. For example: fullsize builds could be broken down into Uprights and Other or Uprights and Cocktails depending on what has been nominated. This is not mandatory and will be based on the consensus of the board.
- Any board member recommended and seconded for a category will recuse himself of having anything to do with that category.
- Rule #6...THERE IS NO RULE #6!
- Decisions on whether or not something is a valid entry (fuzzy dates, versions, completeness) will be made by the consensus of the board and once published are not subject to a flame war.
- Voting will be conducted in the same automated manner as last year, board members can vote, and their role is purely administrative.
To nominate please reply with this format:
Category: Name of Build or Project: Link
<optional description of why nominated for that category>
Any project nominated twice (by different users ;)) will make it to the voting threads which will open NLT 01 FEB 2013. That thread will close on 01 MARCH 2013 so make sure and scrub through this last year's builds then put up the links that you think progressed the hobby, just make sure whatever you're nominating was "complete" after 01 JAN 2012 and before 31 DEC 2012.
Here's a list of this year's categories and a brief definition:
Fullsize cabs - Uprights, cockpits, V-Pins, Racers, and showcase cabs that demonstrate outstanding theme, style, balance, and execution.
Small cabs and non standards - Bartops, Cocktails, Minis, Micros, and cabs more easily defined by what they aren't, cab in furniture, cab disguised as something else that demonstrate outstanding theme, style, balance, and execution.
Hardware - custom built or modified controls, lighting, products, or other physical cab elements that are new or improved this past year and advanced the hobby.
Software - this can be a piece of code or specialty tool user written or created this past year that created or improved emulation capability or generally increased software flexibility to include software hacks.
Forum Member Contribution - a member who goes above and beyond to provide users with new information, serve up helpful links, and otherwise brighten our day.
Thanks for taking the time to nominate your favorite(s) and help us document the best projects of 2012!

Lots of great stuff this year. There were a few builds that I really wanted to see completed that I'll just have to wait another year to nominate but that doesn't detract from the great stuff that's been finished this year, a lot of it on a very tight timetable making it all the more impressive.
Here are a few that I think deserve recognition and consideration.
Fullsize: JKDubb's cocktail (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,118776.0.html) - wonderfully documented, great attention to detail, unique design, simple lines, good execution, a fun build. Great stuff.
Small cab: Three years in the making retrofuture's Xevious Bartop (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,92656.0.html) is awesomely awesome.
Hardware: CraftyMech's SLG (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,128970.msg1318001.html#msg1318001) - CraftyMech came out of nowhere with an amazing scan line gen that fits in a vga dongle and requires no setup aside from ensuring correct display resolution. The results are fantastic and the fact that he went from prototype to shipping finished products in less than a month is unheard of.
Software: Nitz's coding work on the TRON in game switching (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117395.0/all.html) - it started off as my bright idea (or fool's errand depending on who you ask >:D ) and Nitz swooped in and pretty much held my hand through the entire thing. I didn't do one piece of original work on that project, I just applied Nitz's code and advice to the issue and got it working. Without Nitz it wouldn't have gotten off the ground and 100% of the credit goes to him on that one.
There are lots of other awesome builds and projects out there in every category just waiting for you to nominate them, let's see'em!

Nominations- First Go-
Fullsize -
Dr. Chek's Echo Base (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122438.msg1299654.html#msg1299654)
Great artwork and frontend. Nice nod to a classic traditional design.
GriffinDodd's Marvel vs. Capcom: Revolution (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121570.msg1289719.html#msg1289719)
Innovative, flashy, and well-done in many respects. I got to see this one in person, and it's pretty nice.
Nephasth's Two-Headed Beast (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,108719.msg1313058.html#msg1313058)
The light work alone makes this stand out, but the use of brushed metal control panels takes it over the top.
Small Cab
Vigo's The Vigolix (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119533.msg1267233.html#msg1267233)
Innovative, economical, truly an example of BYOACing.
Hardware
CraftyMech's MiniSLG Scanline Generator (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129344.0.html)
My favorite new thing to come down the pike here at BYOAC this year. A solid example of inventiveness and creativity. Hell, I bought three.

Thanks for the nomination! :)
I have to do some digging through last year's projects again, but I'd like to nominate this now:
Small Cab
rockyrocket's Tempest(ish) caberet (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,123455.0.html)
A thing of beauty.
All the builds that have been seconded already are great builds.
I would like to second retrofuture's Xevious Bartop and JKDubb's cocktail. Both wonderful builds that weren't immediately in my mind, good looking out Le Chuck!
-
I'm assuming this one is complete, correct me if I'm wrong (I know he had mentioned other panels at one point).
Full size
TopJimmyCooks' SwitchCade (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,112889.0.html)

Great start already! :applaud: :applaud:
Keep those nominations rolling in and remember this isn't the Hall of Fame thread, you can't nominate your own build! ;D

I'm picking up what you're putting down! It's always hard keeping track of all the great builds, which is one reason I love the UCAs. ;)
How about the critically acclaimed...
Small Size
Le Chuck's Star Wars Micro (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117874.0.html)
-
Software: RamjetM2Borderless: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121412.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121412.0.html)
Fixed the issue with M2Emulator where shooting offscreen would result in the game minimizing.
This issue had been around for years with no solutions in sight.

2. Forum Member Contribution category will not be held this year. DaOld Man will wear the sash for another year whether he wants to or not.
Well I had been planning on nominating PL1 and BadMouth for this and was just waiting for the Awards to be announced. Even though that category is not open this year I'm going to nominate them anyway. ;D
There are a lot of helpful folks on this forum but those two have stood out to me this year by posting quite frequently with advice or feedback. Nothing specific but their names seem to come up everyday as I am cruising the site.
Thanks to Yotsuya, DaOld Man, BobA, DrVenture, and Le Chuck for managing this process this year.

Well I had been planning on nominating PL1 and BadMouth for this and was just waiting for the Awards to be announced.
Thanks for the honorary mention, guys.
Just being nominated (unofficially) in the same category as DaOld Man is truly an honor. :notworthy:
If the committee does does reverse it's ruling and includes the Forum Member Contribution category, another name that definitely belongs in the mix is Sirwoogie for his behind-the-scenes, under-appreciated IT work in transitioning us to the new board/servers in a (mostly) seamless fashion.
Let's not overlook one of the key builders of this stage that enables and elevates all our performances.
Thanks to Yotsuya, DaOld Man, BobA, DrVenture, and Le Chuck for managing this process this year.
+ 1000 on this. :applaud:

Software:
GroovyMAME by Calamity
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/board,52.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/board,52.0.html)
GroovyMAME's main features as compared to official MAME:
- Improved video and audio synchronization that achieves truly smooth scrolling, tearing-free video and hiccup-free sound.
- Automatic generation of custom video timings for CRT monitors.

Rule #6...THERE IS NO RULE #6!
Forgot to acknowledge this earlier. Well said, Bruce (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruces_sketch)! :duckhunt
Software - Degenatrons for the DIY Keyboard Encoder (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120362.0.html).
For a comprehensive overview of the project, look here (https://sites.google.com/site/degenatrons/controller-interfaces/usb-keyboard-encoder/resources).
(NOTE: This is not the KADE which hasn't been released yet, but the earlier AVR Encoder adapted from Bootsector's open source USB RetroPad Adapter (http://www.brunofreitas.com/node/41).)
When loaded on an AVR (commonly available for <$10), this firmware allows users to select from 23 preset keymaps broken into 6 groups.
With the press of a button, users can toggle between maps to select the one that works for a particular emulator program or application.
This firmware makes building standalone controllers (Visual Pinball/Future Pinball, Defender, Battlezone, etc.) and swappable control panels with attached encoders much more affordable.

Nothing specific but their names seem to come up everyday as I am cruising the site.
In my case, it's being stuck in front of a computer at work and needing constant distraction to make the day bearable. :P
I'll second Degenetron's AVR software.

Well I had been planning on nominating PL1 and BadMouth for this and was just waiting for the Awards to be announced.
Same here, was waiting to nominate Badmouth and PL1 as well. You guys rock!

Awe Shucks. Sometimes I worry that I post too much. :lol
I'll second TopJimmyCooks SwitchCade, since I stole his pololu scripts and t-track bar idea.
-
Second on Le Chuck's Bartop and Nitz on the software help. The results of his scripting know-how are hard at work on my cab as well. I'm thinking about doing Le Chuck's wireless mouse presenter to trigger adaptation for my u360.
Edit: Darkade may have been 2011.

Thanks for the nomination for Revolution guys, it's really nice to be nominated by such skilled and knowledgeable people.
At the risk of knocking out Little Ms. Pac-Man's nomination chances >:D I have to nominate Ninja Squirrel's Black ops (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,101426.0.html) for the bartop category, a build of insane quality and excellent design standards.
Also for full sized cab I'd nominate theShaner's Alien Abduction (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=117641.0/) it's a great example of well thought out build of great consistent quality throughout, excellent design, lighting and overall finish.
Hardware - Not sure if this covers mechanical and electrical but I'd nominate TopJimmyCooks Switchcade for the excellent work on the control panel and the mechanical operation of the modular system.
-
The Users have spoken. Forum Member Contribution is now active for this year. Thanks for the input, everyone.

An amazing build, but I don't think he's done with it yet.

Aw shucks *shrugs shoulders and kicks left foot into dirt* twasn't nuthin' at all.
I appreciate the nom, and the seconds!
The wireless trigger stick mod went up against Bender's DK mini in the '11 hardware final and lost spectacularly ;D
Darkade itself went up against a host of other awesome '11 bartops who all bowed before the American Ace if I recall. Thanks tho!

dgame, G-MAME has been around longer than this year so it isn't eligible; however, if there is a specific patch or a significant update to the software from 2012 that you'd like to nominate that should work. Also, Calamity could always use a pat on the back now that user contribution is back *hint hint*

Software:
GroovyMAME/GroovyUME 0.147u3 SwitchRes v0.014
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,128879.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,128879.0.html)
What's new in SwitchRes v0.014
- Fully rewritten modeline engine. Redesigned algorithm for resolution picking, now each resolution reported by the system is evaluated individually according to your monitor specs.
- Full PowerStrip integration, so at least in theory many more cards are now supported (i.e NVidia).
- Support for VESA generalized timing formula (GTF), this is to provide quick support for multisync PC CRT monitors (not for the ancient fixed-frequency ones!). Use the monitor presets labeled as "vesa".
- New monitor presets added.
And more!
If this is too old then fine. The GroovyMAME 147u3/SwitchRes v0.014 version is the best thing since, well, CabMAME. No more hours configuring INI files to set the correct resolutions for the Arcade CRT monitor. The 146u4 version was very good, and 147u3 is plain awesome.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117320.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117320.0.html)
Yeah I second this, also thanks for the nomination - what an honor (is it true that if you are nominated saint tells you what he`s building for his games room?).
So for software
I loved the 4 to 8way AHK switching fun (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117395.0/all.html) from nitz
And for fullsized cab
ECHO Base (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122438.msg1299654.html#msg1299654) from DrChek.
-
Small Cab
selfie's Vertical Acrylic Bartop (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122978.0.html) (the red one)
Hardware
Andy's ServoStik (http://www.ultimarc.com/servostik.html)
Not sure if vendors can be nominated, but this sure made switching mechanical restrictions a possibility for nearly all skill levels in the hobby.
-
There's nothing in the rules against vendors, so nominate away!

Fullsize nom: jahilton2002's Space Invaders (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116374.0.html)
There's another build I can't put my finger on and need some help in the search-fu department. Not sure if I want to nominate but definitely want to give it another look. It made kotaku or something and got trolled by all these non-builder dweebs pretty hard. It was pretty simple, white with a great simple paint job, a few bands of color that followed around the cab across the CP. Very modern with a retro feel, very slick. Anyone?
Edit: Nevermind, found the kotaku one. That wasn't it. There is another one that had a similar paint job but better lines. Can't recall.

Replay (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121798.0.html). Not to be confused with Santoro's Arcade Replay (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,71848.0.html).

Nope, that was the one that made Kotaku. The paint is awesome but there is something about the cab shape that puts me off. Coulda sworn somebody out of Europe did something similar but used a more classic cab style and curved the lines through the corners somewhat. Maybe I'm misremembering.

Fantastic wiring, love the CPs and led lighting, it has two heads!.
Need to browse the forum some more for the other categories.

Hardware: TopJimmyCooks for SwitchCade's modular panels (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,112889.0.html)
I second TopJimmyCooks modular panels. I love the sophisticated look and the neatness and attention to detail. I'm also a fan of panels without artwork as they show off the natural craftsmanship.

It had thick rainbow colored stripes coming off of the buttons? I think I remember what you're discribing.
Starcade (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116996.msg1239906.html#msg1239906)!
It's gorgeous, but keyboard drawers are killers. Man. Decisions.
Was that the one you were looking for? You first said it was white... :whap
Nah, but your rainbow comment sent me running in that direction. There is another.
Probably not it, but Project Ataray (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121286.msg1286493.html#msg1286493) and Frosty's unnamed slim cab (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,123125.msg1307581.html#msg1307581) (unfinished) are the other ones that came to mind. :dunno

Frosty's was the CP I was thinking of. Thanks Scott!

Here's another Full Size to nominate:
RyoriNoTetsujin's The Final Stage (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119304.0.html)
Another:
g-rock26's Project Morph (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120787.0.html)
Wow... Seriously? That's awesome! I have exactly zero chance of winning with the other cabs in the category, (especially the Two-Headed Beast! Hello, I mean DAMN that's a piece of work!) but in all honesty, the fact that 2 people actually remembered/acknowledged my project at all makes me feel really, really good. Truly an honor just to be nominated. Thank you! :notworthy:
While I'm here, I'll second the RamjetM2Borderless application. I use it and it works brilliantly.
-
Well mgb, I'm wanting to nominate this build for the 2012 UCAs. Did you finish this one up?
It looked completed when I took a look at it. (And I got to play it too!) There's nothing quite like playing vertical games on 27" monitor. I definitely second that nomination.
D
Thanks a lot guys.
yes it is finished. I'm very honored to have nominations.
Looks like you can add mgb's Vertical Retrace (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,108784.0.html) to the growing list of full sized nominees.

mgb, griffindodd and anyone else who tried to nominate the black ops bartop-thanks guys, I feel honored to be considered and remembered...and yotsuya is correct technically. I did say it wasn't complete, just tonight I put a small front panel jack in the back so I could play in peace (with headphones) and a few other small touches. Don't worry though there is still next year, hopefully it won't be forgotten by then :) Fantastic work by the rest of the nominees, I missed quite a few of them over the last year!!

It's a beautiful piece of work, Ninjasquirrel. I hate using my teacher voice when people nominate your (well-deserved) project, but I've been tasked to oversee the rules, and well, you know.
Just take solice in knowing you set the bar high for 2013!

Shouldn't JKDubbs Cocktail be in the Small Cabinet category since it is 1, a cocktail and 2, a piece if furniture?

Aren't all arcade machines pieces of furniture? >:D
On a side note, I think JKDubbs Cocktail might be larger than the Beast... that thing is huge.

Hey, wow! I'm nominated for an award on BYOAC. How did that happen!
I do this stuff for fun so it is great to know that the community is finding the DIY keyboard encoder (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120362.0.html) software useful.
...and I didn't do this all on my own either, there was lots of input and direction from this forum. A big shout out to PL1, 404 and erm even PBJ.
This project has since developed into something much bigger and we now have KADE (a collaboration of me, Sharpfork and Bootsector). KADE will be released very soon and I hope to see folks on BYOAC making good use of the open hardware and open source software.
I'm sure that without the input from BYOAC members, these projects would not have reached their potential.
I'll also be nominating PL1 for his input into the development of the DIY Keyboard Encoder (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120362.0.html) and for his continued contributions to the KADE encoder project.

True for the whole program, but the SwitchRes v0.014 is the new patch that is being nominated, not the whole program.
The committee already officially accepted your ammended nomination (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129461.msg1324351.html#msg1324351), dgame.
Nominated Projects that need confirmation
These have the high honor of being nominated by one of our users as the best of 2012 but have not yet received a seconding vote. Please give these some consideration, somebody thought they were good enough to nominate and perhaps you might agree and get them into the vote off.

Sorry, last update (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121766/) on that build was in 2005.
Doesn't look like there are any 2012 eligible options, unless IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000204/) missed something.

If three are recommended in the current categories (eg fullsize) they would likely be broken out into their own category for the vote. If not they (or it) would compete in the base category. Have one in mind?
-
Wow! I'm away for a while and come back to a nomination ;D Thanks Guys!
-
Project Morph has been moved into Small Cab category as it is primarily a cocktail. Thus far we have two great cocktails in that category.
Challenge: Find another awesome cocktail deserving of a recommendation to compete against these in a sub category.
-
In addition to needing one more Cocktail nomination, we need one more nominee in the Forum Member Contribution category -- or a second on Sir Woogie for his work on the board upgrade (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129461.msg1324237.html#msg1324237)/migration.
Ahofle seconded Calamity's Switchres Patch nomination here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129461.msg1325752.html#msg1325752) 5 days ago. (Second post still has it under Needs Confirmation.) :dunno

Us being nominated, but not having a third entry to force a vote is a pretty good outcome.
A win for us both IMO.

If not then thats understandable but if yes then
for the hardware catergory - russdx for his revolutionary pindmd board (http://www.pindmd.com/default.php) that has enabled real dmd`s in pincabs.

It's been over a week since the last nomination so to keep things moving the nomination window will be closing in 24hrs. Expect to see voting threads up by tomorrow evening. A hearty congratulations to our confirmed nominees and many thanks to everyone who participated!

Maybe if you posted some pics or updated the thread or you know something :dunno You updated that the cabinet was done in the fall, then started on the marquee, then no more updates. I know that you've completed your software and I imagine that the machine is sitting happily complete and being enjoyed but if we don't know about it we can't exactly nominate it know what I mean?
Any traction on the banana royale side project? I've sent you a few pms about it but never heard back on that either. :dunno :dunno
Would have liked to have nominated that, it would have taken the category easily IMO but maybe next year.

I'm going to second this. It is a fantastic build and a remarkable piece of coding to make it all work. I have high hopes that the game will find it's way to public release in some form in the near future. As for the back and forth about the cabinet being completed or not (some of that behind the scenes) I think it's completely in the spirit of the UCAs to accept this build for this year. After all, that means that the UCAs are fulfilling one of its envisioned rolls as a forcing function to builders for them follow-up on their posts and show off their hard work and completed projects.
-
And we're closed! Thanks for all the great nominations and be on the look out for the voting threads to open shortly!
Just so everybody is tracking there will not be a vote off for user of the year however those individuals will be formally recognized in the final winner's announcement thread at the end of the voting period. Thanks again for all the support so far!
-
Mods - clear to unsticky. Thanks.
-
Let the (thinking about who to vote for) begin.
And may the best win!
For those who do not win, take heart in knowing that you were nominated, and that you are among "The Best"!
Special thanks to LeChuck who, without him, this would not be.
-
Wow, Thanks for the nod... I got a nomination 2 years in a row... I guess that means I'm going to have to build something this year :D
-
Thanks for the nomination guys! Means a lot.

I just want to repeat how incredibly grateful and humbled I am to just have been nominated - especially alongside the other nominated projects here!
I don't even care if I win, seriously, it's just a great kick in the pants to know that my project didn't go unnoticed, even months after the fact. It's a great feeling.
Don't know if I'll be able to have a real project in 2013 ... but I know for sure these guys will continue to push the envelope, and encourage others to get into this crazy hobby! LOVE IT. ;D
