Title: Question Regarding Control Panel Hindges
Post by: Yourname942 on December 28, 2012, 01:14:11 pm
Is there a better side to choose which way the control panel flips open? [ie opening towards the player or towards the cabinet]

I feel like if it opened like this: (in that direction)

I feel like if it opened in that direction it would constantly open if people are leaning on it.

Is this the case? if so should it open in the opposite direction? Thanks.

If it opens towards the monitor, the joys can break the glass/plexi.

The down sides to putting the hinge on the monitor side are:

1. Accidently putting a joystick handle through the screen when it opens.

2. Having either a visible piano hinge or a gap between the CP and the rest of the cab.

By hinging the front and having some type of latch, cross-bolt or screw-down on the back, it's easier to make it look good and work properly.

usually there is a latch that holds the panel shut.

you reach in through the coin door and flip the latch open and the panel swings up.

same to lock it down.

Mine has no latch.  I built the CP and CP box with dowels, so you have to really, really want it to tip.

But if it is a 4player CP with 4 pretty big (very muscular guys) won't it be really easy for it to flip if they are all leaning on it/smashing the buttons at once? (if the CP opens as like the Blue Pill's CP)

Nope.  This CP wouldn't work for that application.  If I had a CP that big, I'd probably do a piano hinge and a latch.  But, I can't think of any game that would bring out that agression.

Most of the cabinet designs I see here would flip over if even one big guy leaned on the panel, although it really has nothing to do with the panel hinges and everything to do with how sticking your panel out 2 feet past the base of your cabinet creates a powerful lever.
