I have a red boards golden tee complete that the drive crapped out on me.
I created a clone drive i had made an image of and took it to the machine. after the machine does it's tests of the drive and detects the modem it just sits there. until the watchdog reboots the board. I thought I had a bad drive.
I made another drive using a CHD someone supplied to me only to have the same thing happen.
I brought the boardset back to the shop with me and tried installing the complete upgrade CD. Install goes without a glitch.
this is where it gets weird... I boot up the game with the CD ROM still attached since I figure I'll have to do it again, but it boots just fine. I remove the CD ROM, and the game hangs as before.
I tried swapping the drive for the first drive I tried, and it works as well...as long as the CD ROM remains attached.
so the data seems good, I'm thinking i have a drive configuration problem
I've swapped around the jumpers on the drive, nothing ive tried can get this drive to boot on it's own. It's a Samsung SP0842N

I can't help you but I have the same issue where I put a new drive in it, and it hangs right after it passes the modem. Do you have to have the CD in or just a cd drive hooked up?
-
just the cd rom. i suppose one could just leave it. it says no cd rom and boots off the hd.
i'm sure it has something to do with the "single" and "master with slave present" kind of thing is screwing it up.
i managed to find an exact model drive in among the junk i have. cloned the drive and voila! works just fine.
if this was our machine, i'd just toss an old cd rom drive in there, but alas, it's a clients machine.

Hmm, okay, that's very odd. My board is now acting up like it has some cold solder on it, so I might be SOL anyways, but if I get it back to the same point as you, I'm going to try that CD drive trick. I want this game back up already!

hi
i got $20.00 that say's it is a copyed drive
put in slave/master mode
instead of a deriect :cable-select-mode:,which would require a copyer
u c when in master/slave u need to have the cd in there
so it can try to boot from it,then it will default to the harddrive
if it is copyed in cable select mode it will not look for the cd-rom
startech make's a wonderfull copyer
i have lived the former until i dropped the coin for the copyer
and it is by no means that much money
i use it all the time now for every game i do
merit's/pga's/golden t's/buckhunter's/the full gammet

I looked up the way the original drive was configured.
it seems to be configured as a "single (neutral position)" not sure what that means, but it does have standard master/slave and the other drives i tried can only be configured as master, slave, or cable select.
setting the working drive as master causes it to behave in the exact same way as the others.
it must just come down to how the board communicates with the drive.

hi
cable select is what u are looking to do
will rid u of the nasty cdrom thing
done it did it have a tie shirt for it

yeah I tried cable select but the board wouldn't even detect the drive, it would just time out and say no drive detected. I even swapped the straight through cable for a cable select cable with no luck.
I have a feeling it had something to do with the drive configuration and the boot rom. (1.02)
I'll have to try locating the newer rom (2.09) and see if that helps.

hi
can u do eprom burn's ?
reason i am asking
is because a i have a 2.09
i can copy and send u the .bin
went through this exact problem with it's-gamming about a year ago

went to the copyer and never looked back
but u are welcome to try if u want

Thanks ed, i'll take a copy of that ROM. This machine is good to go for now, but it's going to be an issue later.
Just zip it up and attach it here to the thread. When I get some downtime I'll give it a go and see if that's the issue.

had the same issue come up with a "Carnival King" drive i cloned. it had Eagle boot ROM version 2.04.
Found a copy of 2.09 and burned it to an 27C010 ROM (original ROM was a one write only chip) popped it in and it booted right up.
