Title: 2013 New Year's resolutions
Post by: ChadTower on December 20, 2012, 10:33:47 am

Anyone want to make some resolutions?  Set a goal, kill a bad habit, eat a sandwich?  Do it here!

I have three resolutions right now.  I might add a fourth.  I keep starting lifting again but stopping after 3-4 weeks.  I have been allowing other parts of my schedule to interfere and not making the time for trips to the Y.  This happened several times in 2012 and it's not going to happen in 2013.  To that end I picked up a squat rack and flat bench off of Craigslist a couple of weeks ago.  It's now set up in a corner of my yard and I'm easing back into the routine.

My lifting goals are to regain some of the strength I had ten years ago.  I'm going for a bench of 250,  squat of 330, deadlift of 330.  All should be reachable by the fall from where I am now.  The only equipment I'm missing now is a few plates and a couple more sets of spring clips.  And maybe a VHS copy of Rocky IV.  :)

Are you expecting a mild winter?

We didn't get much snow last year after getting five years' worth two years ago.  That's right next to my shed so if the snow starts to really come in I can probably throw a slanted cover over that area so it doesn't pile up there.  Temps shouldn't affect me much.  Workouts have a way of keeping a person warm.  :)

Quit smoking and drinking beer for over 2 years.  Then, a trip to the coast with our high school friends had us drinking and smoking like pirates.  Ugh.  So, after 5 months of the nonsense, I'm back in to get on the wagon again.  Saves money, I'll feel worse, but I'll be healthy.  So, first of the year, back on the wagon.

Then, it's on to the mountain bike.  I've been riding for over 20 years and just stopped when I moved back to Ga.  Trails here suck.  They're gentrified and are so full of traffic that it's sometimes unbearable.  In Ct. where I'm from, mountain biking is more of a skill and it'll take you 2 hours to cover 4 miles in some of the most technical terrain.  Here, it's exercise.     But, I need to find the love somehow.  Either that, or I'm getting back on the ramps!

Now...where's my lighter?

Dude! I wish I had a squat rack. I've got to power clean, then front squat which isn't bad but keeps me from maxing out.

Keep your eye on Craigslist.  This is the second time I've picked up a bench and rack like this for $300.  They pop up fairly frequently when some gym decides it has to "upgrade" the equipment to stuff that has more chrome or better paint.  This is the one I picked up for $175 8 years ago and sold maybe 4 years ago when I got into pinball.

A few of my goals for the year

Pay for the oldest child's braces without swearing every month
Lose 20lbs
Get both cabs 100% finished rather than just playable. Finally got the basement finished this year so no excuse for unfinished cabs.
Write and record at least one complete original song.

Start Christmas shopping in October and not two days before Christmas Eve.

I always say I'm going to do this.  Then I get sucked into 10 days' worth of work prepping and recovering from Thanksgiving.  I'm too worn out after that to shop for a week.  Then we're right back to Dec 20th and most of my shopping is ahead of me.

Yeah...sux.  It's been a difficult x-mas season around here.  Mother in law got the plague, so we couldn't do the customary x-mas eve at her house with all the italian food...then we couldn't celebrate her birthday on x-mas (she's 12/25 birthday).  Now, I'm sick as are 2 of my kids.  This thing'll never go away!   :hissy:

But, the upshot is I can enjoy games on The Blue Pill and have the Gunslinger running in arcade mode all at the same time!   :afro:

Last year's was easy: I wanted to gain 10 pounds, and  I was successful.  Gave me the motivation to be a little more aggressive this year:
Unload all of my left over arcade related items and fix the Imagination Station.  Then finish the new Hollister Danish website, create marketing slick, earn my JCNIA-JUNOS cert., take one Mandarin class, rewrite the rules for the Three Cheers game, and complete and publish my first short story.  On second thought, I might skip the Mandarin class.  Depends on the hours.

Yeah, that's only part of a bench/rack combo.  I wouldn't use that with all that much weight as it looks like it relies on the bench being present for a lot of its stability.  For $15 I'm sure you could make some use of it, though.   :)

I almost built my own with a pegs built onto a couple thick fence posts set a couple feet into the soil.  If I had not found a real rack by spring that was my plan.  If you have your own yard that shouldn't be a ton of work.

My lower back isn't responding as I had hoped it would to the new workload.  I am adding Yoga to my resolutions.  First is the beginner's round of Yoga For Regular Guys (http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Regular-Guys-Workout-Planet/dp/1594740798) and then once a week with the Yoga disc from P90X.  That should fix whatever lower back weakness/flexibility issue I have right now that is causing me problems.

Sun may not be enough. I'm taking a supplement, generally 2000 a day (the doc recommended 2000 - though some sources say a few to several thousand, to prevent cancer and stuff....)**  plus getting out in the sun when I can. I forgot to mention sleep. I so love being rested versus going out, etc.

So, yeah, I have nothing topical to contribute here. I don't make resolutions.

** I originally said 800mg, but I was wrong about the amount and what D is measured in. The range for D is 30 to 100 (mcg per litre of blood, I think), and mine was down to almost 20!

Progress:

Yoga for Regular Guys is a 90 day cycle.  I finished the first month of the beginner level.  My back isn't perfect yet buy holy crap what a difference from a month ago.  The pain is mostly gone, flexibility is increasing quickly, and my day to day life is a ton better than it was in the fall.

There are a ton of heavy handed emotional videos on youtube on this stuff, and I'm not saying I was like those people, but in 30 days this has made a substantial positive difference on how I feel day to day.   ;D

(YRG is the older and not quite as well retail packaged form of DDPYoga.)

Update:  I'm a week away from finishing off the 90 day YRG cycle.  A couple of weeks ago I added in the 57 min stretching workout  to do once a week.  Between the two the issues in my lower back are greatly reduced and I can feel a huge difference.  I hadn't realized how tight my hamstrings and lower back had gotten over the years.  Things are really opening back up and I feel a ton better.

Anyone else have any updates on the stuff they posted?

That's great ChadTower. Keep it up.

As for my resolutions:

I managed to start and finish one of my projects it was  bartop (Fight Club 360)
Working out 5 days a week, and actually started a no carbs diet (not planning on doing this for the long run) but it's nice to know that I can go a day or 2 without all the carbs I used to eat.
I'm actually under 200 lbs, haven't been under 200 in like 2 years (192lbs to be exact).
Hoping to start working my cocktail arcade real soon.

Power snatch is a Cross Fit staple. It's a dyamic movement, and safe if done so.

This isn't a resolution or anything, more a nod to Chad's commentary on flexibility: I started going to a yoga....class....recently. Never done yoga. Though I've been decently flexible via what I normally do, the yoga is enabling much, much more. It's a weekly thing, and I can tell the difference. Of course, the class population is majority female, at least half between 18 and 30, and I am one of perhaps three males under 50, and the fittest to boot.....but I'm mainly there to gooden my bod.

I tend to have gas more when I'm laying down at a massage. That's without them working on my organs - OH the right person doing that is just wonderful. Be prepared to go the bathroom sooner than you'll get home, though, cos....I hear that train a-coming, it's rollin down the track......
