Hi,
I'm getting ready to make some Mala game lists using the excellent RomLister.
The idea is to be able to find a game by a clue.
For example if someone wants to play Donkey Kong it will be on the All Playable, Nintendo, Platform / Run Jump, and 1980s lists.
The category lists (maze, sports, etc.) do not overlap.
I know where my favorites are and this is for the guests and browsing.
Here are the game lists I am considering:
All Playable
1970s
1980s
1990s
2000s
Atari
Capcom
Cave
Data East
Konami

I know it is a lot of lists but with so many games I want to break it down somehow.
I may remove the *Mature* lists or roll them into the corresponding regular list.
Ninja and Tank are keyword lists, I will add Battle Zone to Tank list.
I want to filter out all clones and put back in the 'notable clones' like pacman.
I also will be removing all 4 player games that have 2 player versions (tmnt, gauntlet, etc.)
I am open to suggestions.

The more lists you have the more time your guests will spend scrolling through endless lists and the less time they will spend playing. In fact, the shorter the gamelist the more time your guests will spend playing.
Trying to find a game by decade runs into the serious problem that both major bursts of arcade hits both happened right on the cusps of decades roughly 1980 and roughly 1990. This will cause a lot of people to pick the wrong decades.
Most people outside of arcade gamers won't have any idea what company made most games and even if they do they will be fooled because half the titles they played were developed by a different company than the one that released the game in the United States.
The extensive number of category lists and the fact that they don't overlap actually makes them far less useful for finding a specific title as the player is highly likely to choose the incorrect category unless it is a sports title.
-
Thanks Paige,
That's the kind of feedback I am looking for.
I suppose I could make a single simple list with the popular classics of my youth (Street Fighters, Pacmen, Galaga, Gyruss, Mat Mania, Robotron, Battlezone, P.O.W., Side Arms, etc.) and hide the big list.
Or should I make simple lists by category (sports, fighters, driving, shooters, etc?)
-
I keep the main list on the old x-arcade setup that my guests use limited to 200 games total.
If they ask for something, I go to the all games list and add it.
My new cab has:
Classics (to mid 80's)
Shmups
Fighters
Beat 'em Ups
Run 'n Gun
Puzzle
Platform
Sports
New School ('95 & up)
I was torn on whether to make a Hack and Slash category, but gameplay is the same as Beat 'em Ups and there weren't that many, so I left them with Beat 'em Ups.
The few driving games that are playable with a joystick are under Sports.
Once I got rid of mahjong, gambling, mature, & games I don't have controls for, then hid the clones, I was only left with around 2200 games to sort.
I stayed up late one night and sorted them manually while scrolling through the all games list and watching video snaps. :dizzy:
Just kept telling myself that I'd do one more letter...then one more....until it was done.
Then I re-enabled the clones in the All Games list.

I like BadMouth's lists. Mine are somewhat similar but I now see I need to condense. Moving the driving games to Sports is a good idea. Puzzle is also good.
I was also thinking of having a 2-Player list for games like Joust, Xybots and Commando that can be played by two players at the same time.
-
Commando is alternating play.
A list of 2 player simultaneous games would be ridiculous huge. Klov lists 1400 of them and that doesn't count the 3 or 4 player titles.

1,400 games to play simultaneously? Awesome. Sounds like a great list to explore. Remove fighting games from the list maybe? 2-player co-op.

If you really want a good gamelist for parties and visitors then it should be hand picked somewhere between 100 and 200 titles. Short enough that the players can scan the whole list pretty quickly, but long enough that they will never run out of things to play.
A small handpicked list has so much more to offer than any way of sorting the thousands of available mame titles or tens of thousands of emulated console titles.
When you hand pick your list you can ensure that every title is great and plays great on the controls that you have. Mame is 70 percent crap, 20 percent decent and 10 percent brilliant. A hand picked list would ignore the crap altogether, hit the brilliants hard and dip into the more popular decent titles (like Tron a collector favorite and constant request, despite the fact that most arcade gamers agree that it isn't that great of a game).
When you hand pick your list then it is small enough that you can tune the dip switch settings for the gaming environment that you want to have.
When you hand pick your list then you can specially map the controls for EVERY GAME ON THE LIST.
Take Galaga on your average machine the player would need to select the correct joystick and only one of the buttons would fire. However there is no decent reason not to map every button to shoot and you may want to even map every player position as able to control the game. Say you have a game with punch, kick and jump and you have a six button panel. On a hand picked list you can map both rows of buttons.
I am pretty big on the whole no dead buttons thing, it really helps keep novice players from getting lost.

This is where LED Blinky and LED-Wiz come in super handy...
-
Yes, those are awesome options indeed. However they aren't cheap and I certainly couldn't swing refitting my existing machine right now. In fact, I am pretty sure I could come up with another machine for what it would cost me to refit with an led-wiz and lit buttons ($100ish).

Here's mine, still a WIP:
Classics - Games everyone expects - Pacman, Galaga, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Berzerk, Burgertime, etc.
Classics 2 - Sequels to classic games like Galaga 88, Gaplus, Donkey Kong 3, Frenzy, Stargate (to keep original classics very condensed)
Shooters (Shmups)
Beat em Ups (Just 2P ones)
Run & Gun (Metal Slug et al)
Capcom Vs Fighters
SNK Vs Fighters
Other Vs Fighters (Mortal Kombat, Galaxy Fight)
Puzzle
Pinball (I love video pinball games)
Sports
Driving
3 Player games
4 Player games (no matter what genre, so you can quickly find a game that supports 3 or 4 people)
Twin Stick games
Action & Adventure - I am least in love with this one but it's my generic catch all for games that don't fit everywhere else. Cadash is one of my top favorite arcade games and I had to put it here, because I refuse to make an action RPG genre or similar.
I know it's a lot, I'm always open to suggestions.
I'm also trying to pare mine down to a few hundred games, just my favorites - but I have a lot of faves. I remember what a chore it was sifting through mame unfiltered though. I will of course add all of my faves and new ones as I discover them, and I also put my friends and families favorite games in there. My sister liked Legend of Kage when we were kids, so I put that in there, likewise Sol Divide for a buddy of mine. I don't really care for either game much but I love sharing the nostalgia.
The 3/4 player ones are the biggies though, it's for a 4 player cab. There's a surprising amount of 4 player games, more than you'd think.

I have found if you have SF 2 Champion Edition and MK 1 or 2 installed then you basically have that entire genre covered. Once you get away from those the chances that you will have more than one guest who knows how to play the game in question quickly drops towards zero. Even if you do manage to come up with 2 guests who know how to play Samurai Shodown 2 (not knocking it, I own a dedicated one) it still won't end up getting played because the other 10 guests will still want MK or SF II.

Fighting games aren't even my favorite genre, but I like a comprehensive list because I get bored playing SF2 and MK. I am considering condensing them into one list but I feel like it will have too many games in one category.
I don't mind having a lot of games so long as I can find them - I think the trouble comes from sorting through clones, mahjong, slots, broken titles... once you clear away that it's not really so bad. And the nice thing about including all Capcom and SNK fighting games is that they all play the same, basically. If you know Street Fighter, you can play Marvel Super Heroes. Or Darkstalkers. You just get a bunch of new characters to play with. If you know King of Fighters, you know Fatal Fury, or Last Blade.
I'm not overly concerned with overwhelming guests, I'll be there 99% of the time to make suggestions and I'll probably be playing too. The cab is mostly for me. :)

You are correct. I was thinking of the sequel Mercs which is 3-player simultaneous.

+ 1
My first MAME cab had EVERY working game listed. Which was very overwhelming for guests (and sometimes for me when they chose a game I was not familiar with and I needed to remap the controls). But on future builds, I would hand pick a list of games and configure them one by one ahead of time. If the rare occasion came that someone wanted to play a game not listed, I simply added it on the fly to the list. :applaud:

That's my plan as well. I've actually built my lists in Excel (with a column for each list) and am adding games manually to the spreadsheet in the appropriate column as I find them.
Any thoughts on having a "public" list and an "super user" list? I've thought about having a separate front-end for myself and a "simple" version for guests and family. Anybody done something similar?

Thanks for the feedback.
I am going to go with the hand picked list idea. The full list can be hidden so in case someone wants to play something not on my list I can add it.
I give preference to the classics and two player co-operative games as I don't go easy on the newbies in Vs. Games.
I think I will limit the list to 100 games.
This is what I have so far:
1942
Alien vs. Predator
Altered Beast
Bad Dudes
Berzerk
Black Tiger
Bubble Bobble
Burger Time
Captain American and the Avengers

Still open to suggestions and continuing the discussion.
Thanks!

I use a handpicked list, but I love the idea of a simultaneous 2 player co-op game list to explore with my nephew and nieces.

This thread has good information on setting up the 2 Player co-op games:

That thread was the basis of the 2 Player Management Wiki Page here:

Couple of comments...
Sunset Riders, popular title, but the emulation can STILL freak out sometimes at times (the protection is very subtle and annoying, or the original game is just buggy in certain situations) if you're aiming for rock solid it isn't one to include IMHO
Tetris.. I don't think any of the early versions have aged at all well "Tetris the Absolute The Grand Master 2 Plus" makes for a better game all round.
Neo Drift Out.. it just seems like a cheap imitation of Kaneko's far better Great 1000 Miles Rally (evolution model) to me?
those are just opinions of course.
Boogie Wings, Magical Crystals, Joe & Mac Returns and "Fantasy Zone II - The Tears of Opa-Opa (System 16C version)" (the version Sega remade in 2008) are all games I'd consider absolute essentials for any cab.
-
Tetris (Atari) is the best version IMHO. It's the one where the guy dances in the middle.
-
Re: Tetris
My favorite is actually NES tetris, the nintendo one (not Tengen)
But strictly arcade, have you tried Blockout? It's a 3D tetris and one of my favorites.
You might also check out Quarth (aka blockhole) for an interesting sorta/kinda related title with great music by Konami.

I'm thinking my kids will want to play simultaneous 2 player co-op games when they have their friends over. I want to make it as easy as possible for them to have fun.
-
You have some great beat em ups there, I think you want to keep this a mainstream but if It were me my "guest" list would have to have Sengoku 3. Beat em ups don't get much better...

Maybe its just me, but I don't like the concept of 'pre-configured game lists' at all. I think it would be much better to have dynamically generated lists based on configurable labels (kinda like gmail labels vs outlook folders). Each game can have any number of labels associated with it. In the front-end the user just select a bunch of labels, which causes a traditional game list to be generated, containing all games having all selected labels. Labels can be added/removed to games from within the front end, and can be pre-configured. A label can be anything, but to give some examples: favorites, co-op, classic, mature, shooter, vertical, versus, 2-player, etc.
Labels should be configurable manually or semi-automatically, where the manual ones overwrite the generated ones.
Manual:
<label>: <[-]rom1>, <[-]rom2>, ..., <[-]romn>, where the optional minus means that this label should be removed instead of added
classic: pacman, tetris
coop: ffight, avsp
versus: sf2ce, -xmen
Semi automatic based on the mame.xml/nplayers.ini/controls.xml/catver.ini, where you specify an XML/ini path and matching value:
<label>: <file>|[path]<value>, where [path] is optional as nplayers/catver only have one value per rom, and where value can be a regex or some other type of expression to allow thing like: year<1990
4-way: mame|control/ways=4
2-player: nplayers|2P Sim
Is there any front-end that is somewhat like this? Anyway I hope to have some spare time during the coming 2 weeks. If so I'll experiment with the above idea, through a python script that lists matching roms based on path-value pairs (the semi-automated labels).

If you have a hand selected list make sure you can quickly jump back to a complete list with games you didn't include.
My friends and I probably have more fun playing the random never heard of games then anything else. Always makes for even matches. Even if the game sucks sometimes it's fun just laughing at the cheese factor.

That is even a further step towards making sure your players spend 90 percent of their time in the front end.

Thanks for the insight and advice everyone. I added most of your two player suggestions.
I searched this and a bunch of other forums for ‘best games’ lists and added a few more co-ops, vs. fighters, and bullet hell games.
Some of the classics included are alternating play.
I upped the list to a maximum of 200 games as suggested.
It is nice to be able to google every game and see pictures and videos and read the reviews etc.
It is like I am building a super arcade and picking the machines that go in it.

Thanks for suggestions and continuing the discussion.
-
Looks pretty comprehensive.
After Burner, Outrun, Hang On, Space Harrier need analog controls to play right.
Midnight Resistance requires rotary joysticks.
-
If you don't have Rotary, replace Midnight Resistance with Gunforce or Gunforce 2
If you want some Joystick racing there are a cople of Neo Geo car games that are fun
Neo Drift Out and Thrash Rally come to mind (I see you already had Neo Drift Out :dizzy:)
Also to repalce Hang on you could go with Neo Geo's Riding Hero.
Oh and Galactic Storm is kind of a mix of Afterburner and Space Harrier
-
Neo Drift Out and Thrash Rally come to mind (I see you already had Neo Drift Out :dizzy:)
As Haze mentioned above....... Great 1000 Miles Rally

lawyerd :lol
And they would be right, that game is tits.

Thanks for the great advice.
I am using two U360s in analog mode with six buttons each.
Removed Midnight Resistance and added Gunforce - Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island.
Not really looking for more single player games or racing games, but Neo Drift Out is one of my favorites so I added Great 1000 Miles Rally.

No love for "Hat Trick"?
-
I would swap out super street fighter II for street fighter alpha 3. You already have super turbo on the list, super is the same just slower and crappier without super meter. Alpha 3 is a badass game and you have nothing from the alpha series on there. If you do add alpha 3 make sure you use the pheonixed rom. It has the blue title screen unlocked (a time release unlock) that opens up more characters and play modes.
Pigskin 621 A.D. gets a lot of two player love at my place. It's a football/ rugby type game with weapons and stuff. "Bring out the Troll!"
Another fighting game I would add is The King of Fighters 10th Anniversary 2005 Unique. Balance smalance its got like 100 50 ish selectable characters and people love it.
-
I'd ditch the Mega play Golden Axe Two and put in Revenge of Death Adder, since it was a proper arcade game. Of course I noticed you have Streets of Rage in there so maybe you're a huge genesis fan.
Is Marvel vs Capcom 2 even working in mame? If so then I gotta get that added to mine.
-
Definitely a Genesis fan but removed Golden Axe II (Mega Play) and added Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder.
Removed Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 New Age of Heroes (preliminary driver)
Removed Super Street Fighter II.
Added Hat Trick , Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Phoenix Edition) and Pigskin 621AD.
Thanks!

Was also going to suggest "knights of the round"...but you have that already! Loving the list, will you be sharing the gamelist with us?
-
No problem posting the final list once I make it in RomLister.
RomLister can output "batch files, MaLa lists, plain ole text files, CSV text files, Hyperspin lists, Maximus Arcade, MultiFe, MameWah, XML..."
I use MaLa. What format(s) do you want the list in?
-
I use MalaFe as well, so I'm game to add a specials list to the now and future cabs. Thanks!
-
Okay so I'd have Cyvern, even if it is ridiculously hard.
How fast is your CPU can you run the Sega ST-V games? If so Cotton Boomerang or Cotton 2 would be on my list
Heavy Smash? that a fun sports/action game
Here are a few others that you can weigh against some of the others you've already chosen
Mystic Warriors (think Sunset Riders, but with Ninjas)
Ninja Baseball Batman (Cartoony Beat em up fun, quarkyness of Ninja Clowns but MUCH more fun IMO)
Track N' Field (when I think of a bunch of guys getting together for some gaming fun this title can't be beaten bonus side effect it will drive your spouse/gf up the wall! If you don't like the 8 bit olympic theme check out Numan Athletics)
like VS games but want something COMPLETELY different? Outfoxies is your game
Raiga Strato Fighter adds an element of scrolling both ways in a horizontal shooter I like it quite a bit
Shock Troopers will give you the feel of a rotary Ikari style game but without the need for a rotary
My list would have
Strider
Tengai ( I like it, kind of a horizontal EspRaDe)
for that matter EspRade or EspGaluda but maybe you already have your fill of cave games, I guess you're running something that has the cave drivers supported?)
Xexex (geez do I like horizontal shooters much but this one is bloody brilliant)
-
Thanks for the advice.
I have the Cave CV1000 driver in my custom compiled MAME though I am not sold on the newer bullet hell games yet. I do like the look of ESP Ra.De and some of the others mentioned though.
The system is Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) with 4GB RAM and 64-bit WinXP. Die Hard Arcade (ST-V) is mostly playable but it struggles at times so I will pass on the ST-V games for now.
Removed Hang-On, Super Burger Time, Magical Drop II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Vs. Excitebike and Pink Sweets.
Added Arch Rivals, B.C. Kid / Bonk's Adventure, ESP Ra.De., Mystic Warriors, Outfoxies, Raiga - Strato Fighter, Shock Troopers and King of the Monsters

That is 200 games.
Still could probably use some tweaking though. Space Invaders? Berzerk? Those could probably go?
-
In terms of vertical shooters (to add some variety from what you have) you could really do with
Cyvern (or Dragon Blaze, both are Dragon themed)
Strikers 1945 II (or III) (basically your classic Psikyo shooters)
Vasara / Vasara 2
I also like Space Bomber for the pure quirky lunacy of it ;-)
IMHO 1944 isn't a very good game, and if you've got Metal Slug X you don't need Metal Slug 2, because Metal Slug X is basically a refined, remixed, FIXED version of Metal Slug 2 without most of the slowdown issues.
As others have said, the Sega sprite scaler ones tend to require analog controls to play right, and while I find Space Harrier to be quite playable without I can't really say the same for Super Hang-On, there are times when you really have to slam the bike in one direction, and you can't do that with a joystick, Afterburner is even worse.
I've also heard people say Change Air Blade is great for 2 player games, although as a single player game is seems to be quite bad
Dyna Gears, horizontal scrolling run-n-gun with dinosaurs?
Demon Front would make a great drop-in replacement for Metal Slug 2 also.
Osman (aka Cannon Dancer) is basically the sequel to Strider (same lead designer..) and every bit as good.
You don't seem to have anything along the lines of Cabal / Blood Bros / Pirates (pick one)
You seem to lack any kind of wall breaking games, I know most require a paddle, but things like Gunbarich offer a similar style of gameplay but are joystick based. Arkanoid Returns can be set to Joystick in the service menu (although I don't like it much) Ghox would be a contender but will still need somebody to decap the sound MCU so it can have proper sound :/ Jumping Break? Block Block has a joystick version.
There's also no 'Head On' style game, which is another classic style, the original Head On looks rather dated although is still fun, Counter Run wasn't a terrible sequel (one of the few game in MAME where you still have to use the bootleg version tho, because the original version has the code in RAM inside a suicide block from 1988, it's possible the code is the same tho, as we found with Free Kick)
I'm not sure I'd drop Berzerk, it's a classic and very addictive.. I think the simple problem is there are more than 200 games worth playing, which is hardly a surprise ;-) you're already under-representing some genres such as puzzle games, some of which can be rather competitive in a 2 player environment. By far my actual favourite Cave SH3 platform game is Mushitama, the sequel to Uopoko for instance.
-
For ball and paddle with a joystick I like Bestri, maybe not better than Haze's suggestion of Gunbarich though. That game is awesome.
I also think if you want to consider some cross hair shooters, other than the fine examples already mentioned (Cabal and Blood bros) one also might want to look at Rambo III or Nam-1975, both add a scrolling component.

Bestri is the prequel to Jumping Break I mention (actually it's a 3-in-1 with the title standing for 'Best Trio' The game you're talking about is Die Break which is the first game in the selection)
I wanted to avoid mentioning the multi-games, because while they can be pretty good (I really like the Pacman Arranged verrsion on Namco Classic Collection Vol.2) I imagine it's somewhat confusing to have to choose your game, then choose your game again ;-)
Action Hollywood is another more obscure one.
Surely either Ghosts 'n' Goblins or Ghouls and Ghosts has to make the cut too? Those are staple arcade titles, and while I've never been a fan of the former (it's considered a classic but too frustrating for an arcade game IMHO) the latter is easily one of the most memorable arcade titles.
If you're really determined to get it down to 200 without excluding major titles then you're going to have to start picking your favourite game from the various series rather than putting them all in.
The King of Fighters 10th Anniversary 2005 Unique is a bootleg of Kof 2002, I'm not sure why that is on your list at all, unless you actually prefer it over the original?

This was my recommendation. I figure if it's a list designed with guests in mind then this is a good game to have on there. I get repeated requests for it just because of the massive selection of playable characters. It isn't like its a "clone" of kof 2002 but more a hack of it with a bunch more characters added. I don't know how well balanced it is but I know the people that play it aren't good enough for any characters to be cheap.
So many people to choose from :lol

My setup has two UltraStik 360 analog joysticks always in analog mode so I can play most analog stick games and MAME automatically maps 4/8 way games.
Just tested Super Hang-On and while quite playable with the U360 analog I removed it from the list along with some of the other one player Sega games. They will be easily available on The Big List if someone asks.
Also cleaned up the shooters using suggestions. Removed Cave SH3 games so the list will work for the masses. I’ll make a separate Cave SH3 List and hide it like The Big List.
I went with Bestri Jumping Break as it has co-op game play. I can’t get past the first stage in Ghouls and Ghosts so it stays off unless I expand the list to 250 games? We will see as more suggestions come in.
I prefer Street Fighters so I go with forum members advice on the other fighting franchises.

Haze I don't know if you'd count Jungler in the head on family you mentioned, but it's kind of cool as well. I grabbed counter run at your suggestion, thanks!
dgame here are my concerns (remember this is just IMHO so take it with a grain of salt)
Blades of steel... Okay I guess I get it, nostalgia, but On 2 Open Ice and Hat Trick are better hockey fun in my book
Similar concern on Altered Beast, it's a total classic, but well.... at least take a look at Metamorphic Force before you commit to AB.
Crime fighters & Silent Dragon (I think you enjoy beat em ups, you have many in this list, for me these don't stand up as well and you should think about some other Beat em up types such as Guardians Denjin Makai 2, Age of Heroes, Dynasty Wars, Ganryu, Growl, Hook, Nemo, Night Slashers, Oriental Legend, The Crystal of Kings, Vamf 1/2, Wild West C.O.W. boys of Moo Mesa. I'm sorry but Night Slashers kicks Silent Dragon's ASS!
Both Jousts? I don't know about that one
MIA AND POW? Especially when you have Thunder Fox which is my favorite of the three
Prehistoric isle in 1930? I can think of a million better horizontal shooters than this (starting with it's sequel and Xexex which I already mentioned)
The Return of Istar?
Toypop?
-
I would stick with the 200 game cap. That is all.
-
No worries, keep the advice coming. I guess it is time to play test the games and decide what stays.
Some titles like Blades of Steel are nostalgic but I welcome the recommendations. Hat Trick is on the list.
I have no problem adding Metamorphic Force and removing say Toypop but the Sega fans (like me) want their Altered Beast.
POW is also a childhood favorite but I could see giving up MIAs spot.
Which Joust is the best?
The Return of Istar and Prehistoric isle in 1930 could also lose their spots.
The beat em ups will be revised based upon suggestions and play testing.
2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge will be on the next revision. Nice game, thanks.
Action Hollywood, Demon Front, and Rambo III are looking for spots.
Thanks for the suggestions, this is very interesting.
-
Which Joust is the best?
At the end of the day, 2 is really just more of the same. It has some nice music and a few graphical enhancements. But the game play is nearly identical, plus chances are your guests are going to remember the original over it's sequel. I'd just have one in this kind of list, although I have both on my cabinet.
-
R-Type 2 and one of the WWF games might be dropable in favor of a bit more variety
The original R-Type is a classic, and memorable game, the sequel I'm not really convinced offers enough new to be worth having as well, it runs on basically the same tech, looks the same, and duplicates 99% of the gameplay without really adding any original twists.
For the WWF games, Superstars is very slow and clunky and doesn't even have very nicely drawn sprites (although admittedly some people might like the characters better) if it came to it I'd probably drop that one, they're mostly remembered because they were WWF games, not because they were fantastic titles in their own right.
Ninja Warriors, cool as it is, is meant for 3 screens, I imagine most people will find it a bit odd, you can just about get away with the dual screen games on a wide-screen monitor without it seeming wrong, but triple is pushing it, on a 4:3 monitor the triple screen games just look like something is broken ;-)
Jungler is certainly a cool little game, yes, cross between nibbler (another classic..) and Head On as you say, always had a soft spot for that.
Arabian Fight isn't traditionally considered a very good game, it's one where they attempted to show off using their new technology, but in the end what you have is a mess of badly scaled sprites, inappropriate blending effects, buggy linescroll effects and frustrating controls. There are far better beat 'em ups, Knights of Valour or it's sequel? If you still want something with some more flashy 'modern' effects there is Crystal of Kings, which a fair few people have a soft spot for, although I find the pre-rendered graphics to look a bit ugly.
Oh, and Penguin Bros, that's a blast, cross between bomberman and bubble bobble, rotating platforms, flipping bombs everywhere, running across ceilings. There are one or two bugs with the original game, but it's one I've always found people to love once they start playing it, especially if you have female guests over.
-
The only lists I have in my front end are for the letters of the alphabet, and it works like a charm.
Most of my friends couldn't name 10 arcade games, so for me, lists based on name recognition are pointless.
I find that the bottomless pit of titles in the full list is actually a big part of the allure of the MAME cab. Last big party I had, I kept seeing people playing random shooters and side scrolling platformers that I'd never played before. I think it's a fallacy to presume that the titles most favored by people who live and breathe MAME have any relation to those that non-gamers would enjoy most.
Plus, the more wound up you get with short lists, the more blinded you get from new discoveries, which for me is still a big part of the fun. I spend hours at a time playing no-namer titles and some nights it's amazing how many of them are actually fun.
-
Thanks for the suggestions.
EDIT: Which Puzzle Bobble version is the best?
The cabinet has a 27” monitor so Ninja Warriors (letterbox) should be okay, if not I can remove it later.
Cynicaster, The Big List with all games will be available if needed. I think people who have built MAME cabs and have had guests over can provide valuable insight. I am interested in fun co-op games. Many of the games suggested are new discoveries to me. Feel free to mention some of the gems you have found. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions.
EDIT: Which Puzzle Bobble version is the best?
My personal favourite is 3, I kinda like Super too, but the emulation isn't very good (slow and missing music)
2 isn't bad either, but the NeoGeo port is an ugly butchered version of the Taito F3 original.
-
dgame,
This thread is awesome. Thanks for making it and to everyone else for suggestions. I'll be looking for similar style games once I get my cab up. Many of these games are ones I haven't ever heard of, so I will definitely want to sit down and try them at that time. Once you have your game list "finalized," is there a way of making it downloadable? I'll be using Mala as a frontend as well if that matters.
Steve

Thoughts on balance... You have about 56 Beat em ups which makes up nearly 28% of your list. If you decide to trim from anything it should probably be from this category. Especially when you also have 31(15.5% of total) Run N Guns which is a similar family of game.
Other thoughts on category distribution: Depending on what you call a "classic" you have about 20 of them. 18 or so Vertical SHMUPS and 9 or so Horizontal SHMUPS.
You have 18 sports games including driving and wrestling as well as 22 VS fighting games and 9 platformers. 6 puzzle games, 3 crosshair shooters, 3 maze, 2 hard to classify into one category, 1 mini game, and 1 breakout.
I think there are a bunch more horizontal shooters I'd have over Silkworm... I'll check my cab and post some suggestions. I think you could stand to add a few of more from this category (bias on my part)
Ninja Clowns still bothers me a little, but it's your list. Again make sure to play-test Ninja Baseball Batman.
Wrestling games... Okay I guess I get having a few, but Mat Mania or Mania Challenge over something like Muscle Bomber Duo?
You only have 9 Platformers, and that's including Sonic and Super Mario Bros. You might want to switch out one of the Snow Bros with something else like Tumble pop or Head Panic for some variety.
Ninja Combat... eh.... it's okay but struggles to be either a RUN N GUN or a Beat em UP IMHO.
How many Joysticks you got again? If you don't have 4 oriented so that they can be utilized effectively I'd drop Smash TV, otherwise you're only going to have one play authenticity. Love the game though and if it can be controlled in 2p to your liking definitely keep it.
-
Ninja Clowns still bothers me a little, but it's your list. Again make sure to play-test Ninja Baseball Batman.
I'd agree here, although I suspect Ninja Clowns must be on there due to a personal love of the game
Wrestling games... Okay I guess I get having a few, but Mat Mania or Mania Challenge over something like Muscle Bomber Duo?
I was thinking there were a few too many wrestling games when I said drop Superstars, but again I figure the OP must like Wrestling games
You only have 9 Platformers, and that's including Sonic and Super Mario Bros. You might want to switch out one of the Snow Bros with something else like Tumble pop or Head Panic for some variety.
Head Panic isn't very good, as much as a fan of Korean games as I am it doesn't hold up well, it's too stiff so I wouldn't recommend it. Joe & Mac Returns is up there already for the Data East ones (I consider that the 3rd part of the Tumble Pop, Diet Go Go and Joe Mac Returns trilogy, all are good games tho) For that style of game I really like Zupapa on the NeoGeo which manages to offer something different / unique.
Ninja Combat... eh.... it's okay but struggles to be either a RUN N GUN or a Beat em UP IMHO.
It's a rather average Neo title, but I can see why some people might like it.
Of course the list is still missing what I would consider to be the single best game Taito ever made.. The New Zealand Story (and picking your favourite version of that is a challenge, the various clones have different levels / level ordering)
-
I have the New Zealand Story on my cab but I've not played it much, sounds like I might need to give it a few more quarters over the holiday break. Honestly Head Panic just came up because I remembered the name, and I wanted to sound like I knew what I was talking about :D
Some Horizontal Shooters I might work in if it were me
Battle Chopper
Blazeon or Blaze On
Cotton
Dragon Breed
Parodius Da! or Sexy Parodius
Macross II
Thunder Cross I and II
Xexex
Others that I like but may not have as much mass appeal
Saint Dragon
Sol Divide
Eco Fighters
Last Resort
Carrier Air Wing
Also the first round of Beat em ups to go for room making:
Arabian Magic
Ninja Clowns
Ninja Combat
Two Crude
Good Beat em ups but could be scrapped for more room
Captain Commando (good but derrivative, and you have Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Final Fight, and Streets of Rage)
Mutation Nations (fun but a bit dull, tons of pallete swaps and limited moves)
The Combatribes (a bit unbalanced and you already have Double Dragon and Vendetta)
Undercover Cops (limited moves, bland graphics)
Violent Storm (good but derrivative, already have Final Fight and Vendetta)
Vamp 1/2 (I know I suggested it but other than a unique look the move set leaves a lot to be desired)
Other thoughts:
I think I'd pick my favorite Double Dragon and scrap the other
Same with Robocops and Shinobi/Shadow Dancer
Do you really need Street Fighter II CE, Hyper, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo?
-
Happy Holydays!
Since there is general interest in this list I will let some of my personal favorites go so we can get 200 good entries.
kuchta, I will post the final list.
harveybirdman, Smash TV is one of my favorites (I have a dedicated 25” Smash TV cabinet) but I can remove it. It is still a fun one player game though.
Which Snow Bros. is the best?
Enjoying time with family and friends today. Will work on the list later.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
-
Snow Bros 2 has 4 player support and has a Tad smoother control. Once you get past the disturbing baby faces at character selection it is a pretty solid game. A purist may say one is better but two may be more of a crowd pleaser.
-
Thanks for the suggestions.

-
Oh man you removed Violent Storm? That's one of my favorites, make sure you try it at least once to hear the goofy singing before you scrap it.
-
Violent Storm could come back since you like it.
I also kinda like this weird Ninja Baseball Bat Man game.
-
the problem is you've reached the point where you're cutting good games to replace them with good games, there's little between the ones you're adding / dropping other than a preference for those titles.
Also with some of them the version you add will be important, this is especially true of Konami, the world version of Xexex is trash, while the Japan version plays how the game was meant to play. Thunder Cross (set 2) has a completely different weapon / power-up system compared to the other sets too..
-
Thanks Haze,
I like the evolution of the list.
I figure the people participating in this thread can get some of their favorites on the list.
I don't include them all but I take a look at every suggestion.
Also things like which set to use are also useful.
When the feedback stops I will post the list.
-
Haze is right... But...
Here are a few more thoughts....
Duplications:
Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa vs Bucky O'Hare: Both great but I'd choose the one I like Best
Wizard Fire vs Dungeon Magic: Both isometric fantasy games, I think I like Dungeon Magic better.
King of Fighters 10th aniversery 2005 Unique vs The King of Fighters '98 The Slugfest: pick your favorite bootleg
Shinobi vs Shadow Dancer vs Eswat Cyber Police vs Ninja warriors : All great but basically the same gameplay for all
1941 Counter Attack Vs 19xx the war against Destiny: I'd keep only one of these
Age of Heros vs Crystal of Kings: Similar gameplay I'd keep only one
Cabal Vs Blood Bros Vs Rambo III vs Nam 1975: I'd keep two at most
Commando Vs Mercs Vs Desert Breaker: I'd keep only Mercs
Cyber Lip VS every other run and gun you have: ditch it
Dynasty Wars vs Warriors of Fate: I'd pick whichever you like better
Escape from the planet of the robot monstors Vs every other run and gun: I'd drop it
Fatal Fury Special vs Garou mark of the Wolves vs Real bout Fatal Fury special: I'd pick the one you like best
Neo Drift out Vs Great 1000 miles Rally: do you really need two of these?
Other Thoughts
Shadow Force has clunkified controls, I think they wanted to take elements from a fighting game and transfer them to a beat em up. A cool idea but it doesn't really translate
Rygar, Contra, Streets of Rage, Sonic, and Super Mario bros all make better console games IMHO
I'll look tonight and see if I can make any more reccomendations for the list, but 200 is going to be a tough threshold to make methinks.
-
I'll throw Senkyu (Battle Balls) and Oh My God! into the pot when it comes to Puzzle games too.
the developers at Seibu are best known for their shooters, but Senkyu / Battle Balls stands tall as both well presented and addictive, it's one that gets featured in quite a few 'what was that game called??' threads.
Oh My God! manages to offer a unique gameplay twist and good light hearted humour to the genre.
Honourable mention to Deroon Dero Dero (aka Tecmo Stackers on the PSX) which is again a bit quirky has has some really good music.
Of course, as I've already said, all you're doing at this stage is dropping good games for good games, and I don't think there are any puzzle games worthy of being dropped.
-
Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for any suggestions.
Add this to your first post when done. ;)
-
Dimahoo or Sorcer Striker
Rogha Armor Force
I started with Dimahoo, which is awesome, but my favorite in the series is actually the middle one, Kingdom Grandprix. Try that one out for sure! All 3 are worth having though.
Ditto on Rogha.
Cadash is one of my absolute faves
Elevator Action Returns
Nitro Ball
Exvania (medieval themed bomberman by Namco, 4p try it out)
Numan Athletics (pretty cool future themed track n' field type game)
That 200 limit is gonna kill ya. bump it up to 250. :)

*kicks self in ass for not suggesting Cadash already *

Still trying to keep it to 200 games. It helps me eliminate some of the ‘duplications’ harveybirdman mentioned.

Still Iffy on these
Arch Rivals
BC Kid
Bad Dudes VS Dragon Ninja
Cabal (Joystick)
Cyberball 2072
In the Hunt
Kung-Fu Master
Mutation Nation
Ninja Combat
Pigskin 621AD
Silkworm
I'm having a hard time coming to terms with Silkworm and In the Hunt being in this list while games like Cotton, Gradius III, and Salamander 2 all set on the sideline
Cabal definately has nostalgia value, but if it were me I'd have Alligator Hunt (if you choose it you'll have to use the unencrypted clone) or if that's not your thing how about Blood Bros? It's a western theme but is much more refined than Cabal.
Pigskin 621AD is a fun little game, but the playabilility leaves something to be desired for me. I can't stand all of the pot holes and bushes in the playing feild, which in my mind isn't big enough. With full disclosure I have to say that I don't really like this style of graphics as well so maybe I'm unfairly judging it. The graphical style is fine for Tapper and Timber, but it's certainly not my favorite. Anyway a sports game that you should take a look at is Heavy Smash.
Ninja Combat sucks in my opinion. As I've stated before it is a shooter maquerading as a beat em up why they didn't have a punch button is beyond me. If your going to have a ninja themed shooter I'd rather have Ninja Commando any day.
Mutation Nation, I have it, it's fun, special moves are a bit clunkified. I just think that there are some beat em up gems that shouldn't be ingnored in favor of this. Perhaps one of the Knights of Valor games? I'll look at my list when I get home to look for additional examples.
Still no love for Track N' Field? I know all that button mashing can be annoying but it's gotta be in most arcade enthusiasts top 200.
When I get a chance i'll make a few more replacement suggestions
-
Personally I rate In The Hunt over the ones you've mentioned..
There are a couple with emulation issues, significant or otherwise.
RType Leo, I think is a great game, but every version of MAME has a bug causing the flicker effect when you're invulnerable (after dying / re-spawning) to not work, bugs the hell out of me and I don't know what causes it. It's definitely an emulation glitch not an original game glitch because we've had PCB owners confirm the effect works there.
-
Personally I rate In The Hunt over the ones you've mentioned..
Perhap my ire stems from being terrible at it, but duly noted.
A few other horizontal shooters to look at:
Andro Dunos
Hyper Duel
Dragon Breed
X Multiply
-
Still no love for Track N' Field? I know all that button mashing can be annoying but it's gotta be in most arcade enthusiasts top 200.
I like Combat School and Numan Athletics more, myself. Same type of game, just more fun to me.
-
Okay so I'd have Cyvern, even if it is ridiculously hard.
I hear you on Numan Athletics, wish my current rig was fast enough for Machbreakers.

Any chance of getting a list of the rom names for those of us that have to manually add? :(
-
Also out of curiousity, what are the specs on the PC that will be running these?
-
What are you using that makes you have to manually add?
-
nimsu:
Have you checked out ROMlister? I will never manually add again.
-
The system is an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) with 4GB RAM and WinXP x64.
27" Wells D9200 and ATI Radeon X600 with CRT_EmuDriver 9.3, only Running x64 GroovyMAME 147u4 and MaLa.
Currently stored on a 160GB 7200RPM Hard Drive. Going to squeeze everything onto a 64GB SSD Drive.
The list will be created with RomLister build 027: http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/ (http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/)
Looks like this is winding down.
I will post the list in MaLa format and rom names only format. Any other format requests? Hyperspin?
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'll leave the list open to suggestions until this weekend when I will create and post the final version. This has been very interesting. I have 10 previously removed personal favorite titles to add to the final list which pushes my personal list to 210 games. The list I post here will only be the 200 gleaned from this thread.
-
Have you checked out ROMlister? I will never manually add again.
Maybe its just me, but I have no confidence in that tool. I played around with it recently, and the results just don't make sense. For example: I selected all my controls and a few genres. I ended up with 400+ roms, then I selected ' no samples' and 'no clones' to cut down on the crap. However, I then ended up with more (500+) roms ??? The only way I could get any kind of expected results is by manually typing in the search criteria.
-
edekoning, manually typing in the search criteria is the best way to harness the power of RomLister.
I keep some search strings in a text file.
'<nplayers>2P sim</nplayers>' & !Versus & !'<category>Shooter' & !'<category>Rhythm' & !'*Mature' & !'<driver status="preliminary'
Now as you discovered the list is cumulative so every time you change something and click 'Go' it usually adds to the working list.
So if you want to make the list shorter close your working list, update the search string with more exclusions (not this, not that) and create a new shorter list.
Double click on titles in your working list that you don't want and find something in the XML to exclude.
'<nplayers>2P sim</nplayers>' & !Versus & !'<category>Shooter' & !'<category>Rhythm' & !'*Mature' & !'<driver status="preliminary' & !cloneof
This list is shorter than the first.
Now to make the list for this thread I am just going to 'List all ROMs' and Ctrl-Click the Titles and Right Click to Add them to the list.
-
Now as you discovered the lists are cumulative so every time you change something and click 'Go' it usually adds to the working list.
Never knew that. Thanks for the explanation!
-
nimsu:
Have you checked out ROMlister? I will never manually add again.
I will take a look.
-
What are you using that makes you have to manually add?
using atomic fe. brand new to it so still trying to figure out how to categorize games. The only way I found so far is a config file where you actually add the rom.zip file
-
For those new to ROMLister: clicking any of the boxes in the ROMLister GUI will replace/delete any manually entered search criteria.
This is why I save my search strings in a text file.
The list will be posted in Atomic FE, MaLa, and ROM names only formats. Still taking suggestions. Thanks!
-
Okay I'm not going to attempt to rationlize these against any others in the list I just love SHMUPS and here are some vertical ones I like in no particular order
Batsugun & Dogyuun: Two bad ass Toplan shooters (Cave was born out of Toplan as I understand)
Fever SOS: Who says disco and space shooters don't mix?
Cyvern: Very nice Dragon shooter for Kaneko
Gunbird 2: Though you have Psikyo shooters represented well in your list, this on is probablly my favorite or at least tied with Tengai
Macross Plus: Don't really know why I like this one so much, probablly the missle lock on feature
Nostradamus: Great for two player action because of the differing shots, and really just a pretty looking game in my book
Haley's Comment: Way ahead of it's time and gameplay still stands up.
Giga Wing: Proof that a vertical shooter doesn't have to have a vertical montior to be outstanding.
-
There's also no 'Head On' style game, which is another classic style, the original Head On looks rather dated although is still fun, Counter Run wasn't a terrible sequel (one of the few game in MAME where you still have to use the bootleg version tho, because the original version has the code in RAM inside a suicide block from 1988, it's possible the code is the same tho, as we found with Free Kick)
I found a couple of head on type games today, that I found really addictive. Thanks again Haze for cluing me in to this style of game!
Take a look at Fastlane and Raimais
One last take and I promise I'll shut the hell up and let dgame publish the list HE wants...
I love Gunsmoke and Gunforce 2. Gunsmoke for it's unique button controls and Gunforce 2 for its transition from the Contra style of the first game to a much more Metal Slug feel. Also there are some really neat game play elements to keep it interesting and fun.
I think it's worth pointing out though that if you're a fan of beat em ups, as fans of this list indeed may be, you might want to check out the rest of the Sengoku series, although 3 is the masterpiece IMHO, the others really do add some non-traditional game-play elements into the genre as well as give nods to the divine of the cannon like Altered Beast.
Also if you like Sengoku 3 as much as I do, you'll definitely want to check out the spiritual predecessor Gaia Crusaders. While a bit less refined than Sengoku 3, particularly in the special moves department, it still has very similar game-play. From adding characters as the story progresses to unique combo's of kick assery it really is a neat game, if you can look past some of the dooshy characters and weirdo storyline.
Another beat em up that I find a lot of fun is China Gate, clunky controls and all something about the art of it just appeals to me. Definitely worth a look, though some will be turned off by it's simplicity perhaps.
I'll try to resist the temptation to drag this out much longer....
-
I appreciate all the suggestions. I am actually looking to reduce the beat em ups and add some more variety.
-
If you're looking more 'classic' era I find Ninjakun Majou no Bouken to be an addictive little game.
That's one of the problems with lists like this tho, classics and more modern games don't really mix that well, especially in some genres where the classic era games are good fun, but have been far surpassed later. (My original point about Tetris, the old Atari / Sega Tetris games offer nothing the newer one doesn't, and the newer one was officially used for Tournaments and Pro-players for a long time, many of whom will shun the classic version for it's sticky slow controls and frustrating piece placement but then you will always have people who have a sentimental attachment to the old version)
You could replace the basic Pacman and Ms. Pacman with the Namco 25th Anniversary release (although that would be cheating) or you could instead replace the 2 'speed up' versions with that, and turn on the Pacman speedup cheat in the service mode (it applies to both games strangely) However as I said I consider including multi-games in a games list to be cheating somewhat.
-
Good call about the classics vs modern. When I can I try to include both. For example I like Cabal but Alligator Hunt looks like a blast to play. I like Numan Athletics but it also makes me want to play good old Track and Field. That is why those are on the list; I couldn't choose between them.
I hardly play Space Invaders, and the Space Invaders '95: The Attack Of Lunar Loonies looks good, but could the list do without Space Invaders?
I tested the Pac-Man - 25th Anniversary Edition but it doesn't feel right to me. I like to see the now familiar 'boot up' screens. Excellent idea though and I agree it would be kinda cheating.
I will also take a look at the Tetris games again. Thanks.
-
I hardly play Space Invaders, and the Space Invaders '95: The Attack Of Lunar Loonies looks good, but could the list do without Space Invaders?
That is the other conundrum.
Games you don't play, but guests will be looking for.
I keep them even if I personally never play them.
I'd keep the original space invaders and dump '95 if you need to make room for something else.
Since this is a general "200 best games to have in a list together" list,
I'd keep it for the sake of the thread....even if you do ditch it on your personal setup.

Removed Black Tiger AND Rastan? You are dead to me.
:laugh2:
-
Just checking if you were still watching. :lol
I have a few suspects to reconsider.
BUT if we only had Rastan OR Black Tiger which one would it be?
-
Those are two of my all time favorites, so I would not drop either. Of course I've pumped many a quarter into both back in the day, so I know them intimately. IMO, there are a lot of platform-y games on your list that lack the atmosphere, music, level design, and playability of both Black Tiger and Rastan.
Don't ask me which.. I don't want things thrown at ME. This is YOUR thread >:D
-
No problem. Black Tiger and Rastan were on my original list as they are personal favorites of mine. They would have been back on m personal list. So I will put them back on the public list. Now to find two spots . . .

200 games! I attached the list in Atomic FE, MaLa, and ROM names only formats.
Rename gamelist_mala.mlg.txt to gamelist_mala.mlg to use it.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone!!!
EDIT: Updates lists posted here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129295.msg1327639.html#msg1327639 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129295.msg1327639.html#msg1327639)

Awesome, thanks for this
-
great list dgame :applaud: Is it possible to get the list in a hyperspin format also? Or do you know how to transfer the text names to a favorite list in hyperspin quickly?
-
I can post the list in hyperspin format. I didn't save the XML for the list though so I have to pick all the games in ROMLister again. Should have time to do it tomorrow. Then I will
edit my previous post and add every other list format supported by ROMlister including hyperspin.
EDIT: Going to post the updated and new lists in a new post instead.
-
Awesome. Great job dgame! Also, thanks to everyone else who contributed.
-
Why NBA Jam TE 4.0 ? The MK characters (and a few other really funny ones) were only in 1.0 and 2.0
-
EDIT: I will use NBA Jam TE (rev 2.0 01/28/94) instead.
I am rebuilding the list in ROMLister right now. Thanks!
-
I have attached the final list in various formats.
Remove the .txt extension from all the lists except gamelist_atomicfe.txt to use them with your front end.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Remove the .txt extension from all the lists except gamelist_atomicfe.txt to use them with your front end.

Fanatastic  thanks for the hardwork dgame!
-
Great job. Thanks for the list(s). (I'm running Mala and HyperSpin) :notworthy:
-
Great work! Do you happen to have this list in Gameex format?
-
Unfortunately ROMLister does not specifically have the Gameex format as a list output option.
I am not sure if any of the other list formats are compatible/convertible to Gameex.

I know, this is a necro thread, but still - good stuff.
I wish I'd found this thread a week ago. I just spent 5 days going through a ROMset one at a time and hand picking the good stuff. This would have saved me SO much time...
-
Turning this into a zombie thread but I just wanted to say thanks for this list. Saved me a ton of time and I discovered a lot of fun games I haven't played before!
No Asteroids or Tempest though?
Thanks again!

Sad to see no Ninja Spirit it your list game :embarassed:

Well since it's been bumped, I may as well throw in my 2 cents.
My game lists are pretty intense. I have one "Favourites" list that I tell my guests to use, and I put all my favs in it, my wife's favs, and the usual suspects (TMNT, X Men, Donkey Kong, anything I think may get requested)
I also have the special controls like trackball games and lightgun games sorted - saves time when someone wants to play a shooter game or whatever.
Off the top of my head:
Classics
Beat Em Ups
Driving
Breakout
Maze
Puzzle
Flying
Favourites
Trackball
Lightgun
Sports
Shmups
VS Fighter
XXX
I may consolidate my puzzle, maze, and breakout into the puzzle category. Probably a good 90% of games that people want to play at my house are in the favourites list, and 80% of that is either Golden Tee or ShuffleShot.

And no Smash TV?

No Zookeeper (zookeep.zip) ?
