OK, so I have a weird redemption cabinet that I have decided (finally) is going to be a PS1 powered Point Blank cab using guncons. The cabinet itself has a small 45 degree angled area under the screen that should be a fine place to put the guncons, but I am trying to figure out how to hold them. I've done some research on arcade gun holsters and it seems that 1. they are way expensive (new) and 2. they don't fit the PS1 guncon.
So I am looking for some sort of container with an open top that I could recess into that anged wood to hold a gun... maybe like a cup holder, only not a cup holder. It needs to be 2"x 4"ish and at least 4" deep. I know something has to exist... pen holder for recessing in a desk? Ideally it would have a bevel around it that would support it in the lip of a routed hole. See horrible mock up I attached below to see what I am talking about. I simply need more search terms... must be something I can find to make an el-cheapo gun holder that looks decent. Ideas?

Make 'em out of scrap MDF.

How about arcade cabinet handles :dunno This question was asked about two months ago, and I was going to suggest it then, but forgot. They will give you the nice finished edge you need and are as cheap as dirt, you just need to modify the inside for the gun to sit on an angle. I removed one from my cab and measured the opening and it is 1 1/2" X 4 1/8". http://na.suzohapp.com/accessories/49006700.htm (http://na.suzohapp.com/accessories/49006700.htm) . I took a couple of pics, but I can't upload them for some reason :badmood:

I'm not here to build my own... oh wait. :lol This is definitely an option. I keep thinking what I need exists somewhere, I just don't know what it is called. :banghead:
Typefighter, may have to look into that some more. I really only measured the guns today, and the 2x4 measurement stuck out to me... I wonder if some sort of plastic or metal cap exists to put on the end of a 2x4 plank of wood? Off to google...

Not sure if they would be wide enough, but search "DIN Pocket" on fleabay

Thanks, I hadn't considered anything from the automotive side of things... "trim ring" may have been the search term I was needing. In fact, since this is a home use situation, if I had a decent bezel that looked good and held the guns right, the "container" part of the holder could really just be a black cloth bag attached to the underside of the hole.
Edit: and I was sure there must be some sort of plastic end cap you could put on a 2x4 for putting it in the ground, etc... but I guess that is not a thing, unless my google-fu failed me. ;)

Check out the holster on Jurassic Park in this thead (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121607.msg1290238.html#msg1290238).

Thanks Scott. The JP is definitely closest to what I am looking for as far as a factory cab goes. Very useful to see the different approaches... and that I'm not the only one looking for holster ideas!

I've been designing a gun cab, so I've been doing the same thing. House of the Dead has a U-shaped laminated bracket on the front of the machine. Not recessed, but this might be my approach.

Darthpaul is making his guns retract into the cabinet like Robo Cop.

n-n-n-n-necro bump!!!
Still looking for the right thing for my Point Blank cab (eventually decided to just route holes in the CP and line the inside with T-molding). Finally came across the term "wire access grommet" and may have found what I am looking for:

Maybe pinch them off a warzaid cab? I say that as I just bought a shell for a gun mame setup, and like the holsters on them.
