Hey guys-
My upcoming project is going to be a custom build of an iconic shaped cabinet. But I have a question I wanted to pose to you-
Since this is a reproduction MAME cabinet, should I use original art, or would it be better to mix it up and do my own take on it. I don't want to mention the name of the cabinet lest it sway votes, but it does have some unique elements that I either have or are in the process of obtaining. I'm just wondering if I should go with the original art, which I have access to and can get printed, or if I should do my own take on it (sort of like Griffindodd's Paperboy).
I've asked two friends on here and they've split- one says stick with the original, the other says do my own take. I'm curious what others think.

Not sure what call to make without details. :dunno
Seems like the type of question to decide on a case-by-case basis -- influenced by your personal preferences.
I think it is great to use the old-school art where it works, but sometimes modified/custom is the way to go.
I recommend using the "peanut butter cup" test -- based on the old "two great tastes that taste great together" ad.
The art may look fine by itself and the control layout may look fine by itself, but a joystick protruding from a character's nose or buttons covering the face/eyes can make otherwise great art look like total crap.

Beer! ;D
So I'll put you down for custom and a six pack of Hamm's..... gotcha. >:D

I'm going to assume "Beer!" means "I don't give a ---fudgesicle--- what you do, brah! Just make it look good!"

I'm a big fan of adapting the original art or making the new cab an homage to the original style. I tried to do this with my first project- used a lot of the colors and lines of the original Ms. Pac cab but with the newer (but not newest) character art style.
But I guess it all depends on what you are going for with the cab, and if you would find enjoyment in modifying, creating, or commissioning art.
My upcoming project is going to be a custom build of an iconic shaped cabinet.

Hush, you! Go vote for "Beer!"

I voted beer but if beer wasn't there I'd vote for custom art, unless you're trying to fool somebody. Now that I know how to make those zippy aluminum data plates I'm going to start forging the shizzle out of some hard to come by cabs.
Not really.
Really.

+1
Some original art was pretty awful, while others were really nice and timeless. Depends if you think it needs improving; some do, some don't.

I voted. :lol
