:badmood: I'm about 6 hours into messing with MAME and I cannot for the life of me get any game to run...
Can anyone point me to a guide for setting this up, using clrmamepro, or anything??
All the crap I find on the internet is outdated, or not very well explained...
-
I think we are going to need more info. What version of MAME? Are you using the proper rom set? Which game in particular, give us an example. This of course is the best starting point: http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php?title=Frequently_Asked_Questions (http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php?title=Frequently_Asked_Questions)
I can relate though, the MAME learning curve did (and occasionally still does) kick my butt.
-
put simply:
whichever version of mame you are using (eg. version 0.147), you need the matching roms (so, the 0.147 rom set)
and then within the mame settings, you need to tell mame where (which folder on your hard drive) your roms are stored

I'm using MAME 147 64 Bit
Trying to play Killer Instinct 1. I have kinst.zip and the corresponding CHD
D:\MAME147\roms (kinst.zip here)\kinst (kinst.chd here)
Killer Instinct shows up in MAME, but when I try to launch it I get "One or more selected ROM or CHD files are missing" or something to that effect...
-
CHD's were updated in 146, you may need to update the CHD for kinst.
-
Took me close to 40 hours on the computer to get my first game to play. It gets easier after that. PM me if you want some help.

How? I really have no idea where to even begin ???

you need the tool chdman and I've found that the a front end for said tool is easiest to use. the front end can be obtained here: http://www.progettosnaps.net/tools/ (http://www.progettosnaps.net/tools/)
let's start with seeing what you have already. Check your mame folder do you have an application titled chdman?
-
Yes I have chdman.exe
I downloaded the front end and put it in my MAME folder.
I ran it with update selected and it said it updated the kinst.chd in my roms\kinst\ folder.
The game still gives the same error though... Do I need to update the ROM also?
-
are you running mame from the command line?
Can you tell me specifically what it says when the game won't boot?
-
I am running the MAME64.exe
"The selected game is missing one or more ROM or CHD images. Please select a different game"
Also I just noticed that when I ran update from the CHDMAN Front end it deleted the .chd... I replaced it and MAME still gives me that same error
-
need to check 2 things.
1) need to verify that in your roms folder you have a folder titled "kinst" and that that folder contains the CHD
2) need to know specifically what's going on. type cmd in the run bar in windows and navigate to your mame directory... type the command "mame kinst" and tell me what it says

** Carefully easing up to the edge of what we are allowed to post on BYOAC, therefore no links. **
Are you familiar with BitTorrent, BitComet, and BitTorrent search engines?
Great way to find large files like CHDs -- the torrent info should include the version.
Alternate method, roll back to an earlier version of MAME that matches your romset and CHDs.

MAME sucks.
Take it to KLOV

Another thing to think about is sometimes sites provide the CHD's in multiple rar files that you have to use WINrar or similar software to compile the CHD, and you have to click an option to add to and not write over the file when creating the CHD file using WINrar.
My guess is corrupted CHD assuming he has everything copacetic in the roms folder.
also I suggest looking into Romcenter, it will ease the hair pulling with version updates, I guarantee it!

Ah didn't realize by update you meant find the newest version. I thought there was a program or something I could run that would update what I needed.

I ran mame64, it gave me the same error and then the game loaded fine... I exited out of it and the error in the prompt tells me that the md5s don't match... So I guess I just need to find the newest version.
Learn something new everyday... I had no idea mame had command line switches...
Sad thing is, I use command line stuff everyday at work...

command line is your friend, it will tell you what roms if any you're missing or if there are any maintenance issues.
Sometimes you'll find that the names of the CHD's themselves will change, that can be aggravating to no end if you didn't have some way to know what the program was expecting.
Look into romcenter, it's pretty much idiot proof, ever since I downloaded it rom mgmt is a TON easier.

also isn't there some bug in Midway games in 147? Perhaps this could be part of your trouble.
Check out Mr Do's guide to compiling and update to 147u3, and you know get rid of those nag screens while your at it! :P

Is that why mame 147 keeps crashing during audit all games somewhere near the 6950 (total) number? Its about 45% through the romlist which would be a game that starts with M?
