Title: Astrocade knob/spinner
Post by: Hutt on December 08, 2012, 08:09:25 am
What setting do I need to change in MESS to have my spinner work like the knob on an Astrocade joystick?

well the knob on an astrocade gunstock is not a spinner, IIRC... it had a potentiometer-like feel, and full stops on the left and right, it didn't rotate 360 degrees....Thats one of my favorite controller designs ever. ColecoVision baseball controllers were very similar and I loved those too. I might look into atari 2600 emulation to see how the paddle control is used in that respect and go from there, as I think the input mapping would be very similar.

Yeah, I realize its not actually a spinner but thought (was hoping) I might be able to use my spinner to simulate it....

Ultimately it would be sweet if there was a way to actually use the Bally control itself. The button and joystick would obviously be easy. But the pot...

You might want to look into the U-HID Nano (http://www.u-hid.com/home/uhid_nano.php) for this.

1 button + 1 joystick + 1 pot = 5 inputs + 1 pot which the Nano should be able to handle just fine.

Update.
Stumbled upon this instead.

I ordered this and it works perfectly!
Quick setting change in MESS and just like playing the Astrocade!!!

I ordered 4 of these (2 different cab projects) and the price was knocked down to $115 or $107 without usb cables.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

That is awesome. I swear, they make everything on that there internet... I would love to play a game of gunfight with those bad boys...I have 4 of em to put to use. I bet Kaboom! on the 2600 would be great with the tiny paddle knob too.....
