Hey guys, ;D
I am looking to accumulate a list of Games for each genre of arcade game. I am trying to make this list detailed and specific.
I.E. have every Street Fighter arcade game made, Every MK Arcade game, but not other random fighter type games that I have never heard of just to have them. I would love to have the option to play any Tekken games made without having to crawl through 10's to 100's of games I have never heard of and more than likely will not play. So I am trying to keep them out of my list and only keep the ones I will play.
- I completely understand that there is a large majority out there that love trying out new games and learning about them, etc, it just not my cup of tea. - :-\
SO.... In Your Opinion what are the top Fighter Arcade Games "worth having" of all time? Please feel free to go into detail (see below)
1. Street Fighter
a. Street Fighter
b. Street Fighter Vs Marvel
c. Etc
2. Mortal Kombat
a. Mortal Kombat
b. mortal Kombat 2
etc etc etc :blah:

I haven't gotten into them seriously yet, but the Neo Geo franchises are usually considered must have.
(King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, etc)
One game that might be overlooked is Soul Edge.
IIRC there are two completely different versions in MAME and one requires higher specs to run than the other.
The Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur is the one console game that I would consider putting on my arcade-only cab.
Is this just limited to MAME?

(bit long, but still narrows it down)

to be honest I don't know alot about MAME, I know I have a list of games and I play them on Mame through hyperspin. I had no idea that there were two types of mame to play higher end games? I would love to play the higher end newer arcade fighting games!
I guess I just don't know the difference or what mame.exe to play them on etc, anyone want to look over my setup?

I think you misunderstood. There are two different Sould Edge roms in the MAME set (regular and Ver.b IIRC)
One of them requires less processor speed than the other, so if one doesn't run full speed on your system, try the other.
I asked if this was limited to MAME because there are a lot of cool fighting games that are playable on emulators other than MAME.
(Sega Model 2 Emulator, Supermodel, Demul, Makaron, and the Taito Type X games run on a PC without an emulator)

I really like the neo geo fighters.
I really don't think you're gonna get a great detailed list of all arcade genres without doing some homework and playing some games you may have never tried before.

I keep a Capcom VS Fighters and an SNK VS Fighters section, that covers most of the good stuff. I have a misc VS fighters section where I put other fighter games. It's not the same formula as Street Fighter, but one of those games in that third category I really like is The Outfoxies. I guess it's a little bit like Smash Bros if I had to compare it to something.

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure

My favorite Street Fighter is a tough call between Third Strike (runs great in MAME) and Super IV (not in MAME, Taito Type X2 or console). There's also a Third Strike online for PS3/360.
Another outstanding one you don't hear about much here is Blazblue (Taito Type X2 or console), and it's predecessor series Guilty Gear (PC or console, and some on Naomi I think).
Also running perfectly in MAME are the criminally overlooked Last Blade 1 and 2 for NEO GEO.
I'd agree that you'll find the most if you go through the games in MAME for yourself. You'll find things you love that you've never heard of.

Is there something messed up with the controls in the Taito Type X version floating around?
They all register correctly in the service menu, but the HPunch button results in taunts instead of a punch.
I have the PC version, but I don't like putting things with menus to navigate in my arcade list.

I'm a Shmupper, so take this with a grain of salt.....
Other than JoJo's, which I mentioned earlier I think you should take a long hard look at the following starting with the SNK/NEO GEO games
Samurai Showdown Series and Last Blade series have been mentioned...
Also Check out:
Aggressors of Dark Kombat
Asura Buster
Garou Mark of the Wolves
Kizuna Encounter
Matrimelee (something about a guy dressed up like a dog pooping as a special move)
Rage of the Dragons
Savage Reign
Waku Waku 7
I prefer Capcom's Vampire Savior series to Darkstalkers series, but I have both
You said you like Marvel Vs Capcom, don't forget SNK vs Capcom
Here's one that I had to get cause I love Psikyo shooters... It's different but I like it
Darak Tenshi: The Fallen Angels

"Toukidenshou - Angel Eyes" is pretty good fun - all female cast, lots of double jumps like the Capcom games
"Rabbit" is big cartoony and enjoyable
"SD Fighters" I also found to be quite fun, although it's obviously a low-budget Korean title in many ways
"Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire" has some goofy character colours (by design, it's a remixed version of the original release) but plays well
"Breakers Revenge" is probably my favourite of the NeoGeo fighters followed closely by "Kizuna Encounter" which I find to have one of the more interesing tag systems. "Ninja Master's" is a surprisingly overlooked NeoGeo title.
"Martial Masters" is a popular IGS offering, although I don't like it much, it lacks character
"Cyberbots" is my favourite of the Capcom titles, most robot fighting games suck (the official Gundam ones especially), but this one comes across well
personally the likes of SF, MK and KOF bore me to death tho.
Maybe hardcore fighter fans would call a good number of them unbalanced pieces of garbage mind you.

Unfortunately, although the lesser known games are often a lot more unique and interesting, they don't really have a community built around them. Yes, the reason is that they lack the balance necessary for really serious high level play. Building in that kind of balance generally requires a lot of game revisions and the financial success to finance extensive dev time just for tweaking.
For many years I never liked Street Fighter as much as other fighters because it seemed generic and bland and comparison, but I kept coming back because there were always real people to play with. Once I really got into it I found that there are levels of depth that you can't see at first, but ultimately make it very interesting.
I don't think the lack of balance makes these other games crap, they're just different. You can't take them as seriously but they're a very fun diversion.
Blazblue, is a nice exception. It's very unique, all the characters are extremely distinctive, and yet it's well balanced. Well some people will argue about the balance, but even though it's a fairly new series, Arc System Works built on their knowledge from Guilty Gear. It has a community now in part because of recent arcade releases.

The serious downside to fighting games on your cabinet is that you have almost no chance at any of your visitors knowing how to play anything outside of the Streetfighter and Mortal Kombat series. So your visitors get thrashed by you every single time, and don't end up having a good time.
-
Yeah, and of the friends I have that are into the same fighters as me, none of them want to practice as I much as I do, so I have to go easy which isn't as much fun as real challenge. Unfortunately I usually have to go online for serious matches. Then I start getting MY *ass kicked, haha. I consider myself to do be doing pretty well on a day when I can win more than half my matchups.
This also forces me to stick to popular console games. There's GGPO, but there's usually not too many people on. Maybe we need to change that!

The solution to this problem is to flip open your control panel and let them pick 2 or 3 buttons to pull the switches from. You'll still have a move or two, but they can learn defence techniques pretty quick.

Haha, yeah. If you want to do stuff like that, there's sometimes options to handicap one player's health.

You could say the same about pretty much any competitive game.. or if you count not coming anywhere close to the high score table, any game in general. If playing a game more and refining your skills doesn't make you better at a game then it isn't much of a game at all.
Just because a game is considered 'popular' doesn't mean everybody is going to be magically better at it and won't have played anything else ever, unless they're very boring people, and even if you do know a game better than them you can always pick a character you're less familiar with, or one you KNOW is weaker, that's especially true for fighting games.
If you really want a party to be a snooze fest for other guests then the best way I've seen is to have a selection of only the well known games, which results in everybody taking things way too seriously, only playing the well known games (say sf2) and everybody then picking only Ryu and Ken, because they know Ryu and Ken best. For everybody NOT playing that's about the most boring thing in the world to watch. Throw something more obscure at them (like Tattoo Assassins) and you'll get people laughing out loud at all the bizarre stuff they've never seen before cracking off and trying out all the characters they can because they have no upfront knowledge of which character is 'best' It becomes a lot more enjoyable even if it's meant to be a 'terrible' game
-
Not sure if you're referring to anything I said, but by definition there's a lot more people playing the "popular" games, so it's much easier to find matches. So I got stuck playing the "popular" games the most, probably like a lot of other people. I guess it's a vicious cycle/self-fulfilling prophecy kind of thing...

So, you're thrashing your mates, what's the downside ;-)

Not a fighter, but my favorite arcade game of all time is the 19xx series. Fly a plane. Shoot ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. I love it.
