Title: Speed Differences ? .73 or 76?
Post by: General Zod on October 30, 2003, 10:27:11 am
Any differences between the two as far as speed is related?

I've finally completed a nice collection of what I like to call , my favs, or "quarter hogs" that took my allowance when I was younger. I'm not so much into looking for updated roms as I am for playing the ones I like at the best speed possible.

Has anyone noticed a big difference in speed between 73 and 76? Do the lot of you usually upgrade to the newest version when one is released? And, if running the Windows Command Line ver. , I realize there is a MAME ver. that's optimized for the i686, but does that really make a difference in speed compared to the standard version? I'm running a P4-2.53 mhz, with 1gb ddr 2700.

Also, does anyone have a problem with Asteroids Deluxe running slow? If I turn off the artwork, it runs fine. Any advice one can give or perhaps a fix to this?

Thanks,

Michael

Not much... with your machine you shouldn't have any troubles at all with new games.

New versions usually put the optimizations geared towards newer games.  And they take speed hacks out of older games... when the hardware outthere can handle it.

But right now you should be find.

btw, I THINK vector games don't use hwstretching / d3d the same way as others.  So increasing the resolution effects them more then sprite based games.  So see if dropping the resolution helps... Then decide if you care about those bezels

Also, there used to be an 'issue' with bezels... They might have not optimized the fix as well as for sprites.... Might be part of your problem

I would think that your PC wouldn't have a problem with Asteroids Deluxe. I do know that the most of the vector games slowed down a lot when MAME switched to using alpha blending for the backgrounds.

On my 233mhz machine I have to use one of the .36bxx(12??) versions to get the vector games to run correctly.
