Title: Spade Bits - 1" or smaller - uses?
Post by: Midcoastsurf on November 19, 2012, 04:18:21 pm
Do you use 1" or smaller spade bits?  If so, what for?

I typically use them for holes that are 1" or smaller...   ;)

bold strategy...

It seems the 1 1/8" bit is common for button holes and joysticks.  I was hoping to get feedback regarding smaller spade bits.

Thanks

Spade bits are cheaper than 1/2" and bigger drill bit.

They are safer for cutting plastics too.

I hate spade bits.  The holes that they drill are nasty and rough.

Maybe I'm just a hole snob, but I can only use forstner bits.

Just used 3/4" for a cylinder lock.  The spade bit cost $3 and the regular bit was $8.

Ventilation holes.  Holes for keyboard or mouse wires. Lock holes and other misc holes.

I like to throw them at people who interrupt me in my workshop.

And by workshop I mean that sorta clear corner in the back of my basement that I can get to if I move all the laundry baskets aside.

I use a 3/4 and drill 2 holes next to each other for the C14 IBM plug thingy.

You can use a 3/4" bit for the joystick hole most if the time.

I second that! Stay away from spade bits for precision work.

I use hole saws instead of forstner bits though.

Yes, for nice holes, I use forstner.  For hogging out button holes and stuff, I use spades.  Just have to remember to stop drilling when the pilot pokes out the other side, flip material over and drill from the back.  No more tearing...
