Title: 4 player upgrade from xarcade 2 player... Advice needed
Post by: bcgamer on November 09, 2012, 12:02:55 pm
Hey everyone

Been away from my project for awhile and i now have time to finish it

I got a steal on a cab few years ago, a shinobi cab already gutted and a xarcade 2 player usb installed in it already.

I want to changd it to a sweet 4 player cab and am wondering what myoptions are and how these big controllers actually connect to the pc in the cab.  Im guessing thats my main issue with my project , ive already sanded down the cab and am ready to vinyl wrap it but tbe controller is a big thing

If you were in my shoes with your knowlege what would you do

Rebuild a custom controller. X-Arcade doesnt' have the room for 2 more players and the mini-I-Pac it uses probably can't handle the additional inputs.

Get rid of the xarcade and get a ipac4

My advice is don't do it.

A Shinobi cabinet isn't big enough for a 4 player control panel and the monitor isn't angled back properly for the players all to see it, and if you graft a panel that big onto it you are likely to make it a flip over hazard. Even if you avoid making it a flip hazard it will look ridiculous and player 3 and 4 will probably have a very hard time seeing the screen.

Your shinobi probably looks something like this.

While almost every non-showcase 4 player machine looks something like this. They don't all follow that basic design scheme by accident, it is the only one that really works aside from a giant showcase cabinet.

When you try to turn a 2 player machine into a 4 player machine the result generally comes out looking something like this (and this one avoided the flip hazard, most make the giant panel 2 feet deep to boot).

Hahaha, "clear the runway, Pac-Matt is taking off!"

Anyway.  Do you mean you're using the X-arcade encoder on the whole panel?  If you're using the panel I'd ditch that stuff ASAP.  X-arcade joysticks and buttons are cheap Chinese knockoffs of Happ parts.  If you want a playable and presentable cab, choose some quality parts and design your own button layout.
