Title: Fresh XP pro install very slow
Post by: gman314 on November 09, 2012, 08:19:09 am
Since my previous HDD crashed, I have recently upgraded a few things on my system. I am using the same Asus M2A-VM board with an AMD 64 dual core processor, but I upgraded my RAM from 2gb to 4gb, I upgraded to a Samsung 830 SSD, and I updated from XP Home SP2 to XP Pro SP3. One thing to consider is that my Asus board only supports up to SATA 3.0 gb/sec, while the new SSD supports up to 6.0 gb/sec.
What I am noticing is that my pc (which one ran quickly from my 1tb HDD crashed) is now running very slowly. First of all, the resolution that I previously used (1024x728, 32 bit) looks very unnatural. Also, there is a bit of choppiness/lag whenever I move a window. Also, copying and pasting from a flash drive seemed to take a VERY long time (about 2 hours for 2 gb). Worst of all, when I tried to run an NES Rom on VirtuaNES it was somewhat choppy. Let me also note that I played around with many of the resolution settings to no avail.
What could be causing this slowness? Could it be an incompatibility issue between motherboard and new SSD? Could the XP pro service pack 3 be causing the problem? Could the increase in RAM actually be slowing the system down? Keep in mind that everything ran great before my original HDD crashed. Thanks.

You may need to update your motherboard's BIOS, or the SSD's firmware, or both.

Make sure you have all the correct drivers loaded and there is no conflicts. Check hardware settings in device manager. Make sure that no hardware items have a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in them.

There are 5 devices in device manager with a yellow question mark/exclamation point. I think that the problem may be the video controller. (http://)

You really don't think the upgrade from xp home sp2 to xp pro sp3 caused a problem? Also, does this mean that we can rule out the SSD as the problem? I wanted to also add that the SSD has a very fast start up time. Wouldn't windows start up slowly if it was the problem?

It sounds to me like you need to update the drivers for the video card. I think windows is using generic drivers just to make it work but they are of course not the optimal choice.

All of those devices need to be updated with proper drivers. Some look like motherboard drivers, network, USB drivers, video card. Until those are all update and no longer showing with the exclamation point the system will not be running correctly.

The vga one is probably causing the most slow down so fix that one first.

Does it matter that the motherboard uses onboard graphics? In other words, I do not have a video card installed. Will  this effect me being able to update the drivers?

Also, does this rule out the SSD as the problem ?

No you just need to get the drivers from you motherboard manufacturer. Probably the same for all of those.

Looks like the SSD has no issues, but one of the other devices that are could be causing problems. The "unknown device" could be anything. Try to figure it out by looking at the drivers from your MB manufacturer.

Find out the exact motherboard you have, go to their site and get the following drivers. You should install Chipset first, the rest it doesn't really matter.

1) Chipset drivers
2) Sound Card Drivers
3) Video Drivers
4) Network Drivers
5) System management (May be covered by Chipset drivers)

Basically windows is falling back on all the inbuilt drivers it has which whilst working are not exactly optimised in any way.

Your particular problem is that your video drivers are not installed. Windows xp will use a default driver to just display – hence the choppiness when you move windows around and such. Even onboard has its own video card drivers.

I had the same problem when I installed it on a P2. I put more memory in it and it worked OK.

I fixed it.  All I had to do was install the drivers off of the disc that came with the motherboard.  Everything works beautifully now.

If there are newer drivers on the manufacturer's web site, I would grab those.

I second that, the drivers provided on the disc are sometimes out of date by the time it sits on the shelf and then you buy it.

I will try that. Do you think that could make my emulators and frontend run better? As of now, I have no complaints with my XP.
