Title: cheap Paddle for Warlords 4 Player Controlpanel
Post by: scorp.ius on November 08, 2012, 03:08:14 pm
Hi!

Ich would like to build a 4 Player CP für Warlords (emulated in MAME). All i can see here in the shops are 90€ spinner. too much money - 360€ plus shipping just für the Controls :P

it should work with some kind of potentiometer, right? Or something else?

They are indeed potentiometers and not optical like most spinners.

The cheap part is the hard part, because a potentiometer of high enough quality to use in a paddle controller will run 15-20 euros each. That cost keep shoving the restoration of my 4 player William's Pro Tennis (Pong) to the back of the line because I don't want to drop $100 on rebuilding the paddles when it will probably won't even see another 50 plays over the next 20 years.

How about hacking a couple sets of Atari 2600 paddles?  It's not like you are building a machine to live on location.

really 15-20? wow ;) but better than those 90€ spinners I saw - which are not even adequate for this type of game as you said ;)

but: what type of pots are right and how would I connect them with a windows PC?

You can use an A-Pac (http://www.ultimarc.com/a-pac.html) to connect up to 4 pots and many buttons.

With the A-Pac you can use a range of pots.  An extended life version like this (http://arcadefixit.com/product.sc;jsessionid=2BAC12042040BE29217ADA6292A9C13C.qscstrfrnt05?productId=827&categoryId=16) or similar is preferred.

There are threads here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,87157.msg915084.html#msg915084) and here  (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,71520.msg734704.html#msg734704)with related info.

Yeah, you can hack Atari 2600 paddles if you want to do it the cheap, they can be pretty fragile when mounted to something that doesn't move, but it would probably be ok as long as no one got too excited.
