Title: The Bicentennial Arcade?
Post by: Woodshop Flunky on November 05, 2012, 02:32:51 pm
What is the ultimate fate of our custom made arcade machines?

A member here wrote something that got me thinking.

Some of us have spent a LOT of time, effort, and money building custom arcade machines.  In my case, I love the arcade machine (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=111377.0) I built.  It sits in a small nook at the head of our hall, and it's always noticed when we have friends over.

But... How long is this thing going to "live"?

I never really gave any thought to the end of line when I was building it.  Is there a day somewhere in the future when it's going to be sitting out on the front lawn with a big "FREE" sign attached?

Maybe I'll end up giving it away.  Maybe I should write a users manual for whoever ends up with the thing... just in case its life exceeds my own.

I'm more inclined to think one of my grandkids will discover it under a tarp in the back of some future shop.

Of course, my son may continue to love it.  Then he can decide what happens to it. :)

My 10 year old daughter has claimed dibs on my machines. In fact, they're "her's" already.

As strange as I find it, my wife treats ours like some sort of family heirlooms.  In fact, when we bought a skeeball machine she insisted that we buy a second so that we could leave one to each of our kids.

I have several pieces of furniture my grandpa made.  We even put a Hutch he built in my son's room just to keep my parents from getting rid of it.  My dad past away a couple of years ago and my sister and I are going to try and keep all the furniture he built as well.  Having something they made with their own hands helps me stay connected to them.  I'm not sure if my kids will feel the same way about my cabinets but who knows.
