I just started my first Mame cabinet and have finished up the rough woodworking. Starting on the Formica this week. My cabinet is based upon "The Supercade" Project that I have modified a bit to my taste. I am having problems coming up with a name at this point.

That's nicely done! I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thats a lot of buttons! I look forward to seeing what those are all for.

Oh my god, don't get me started!
-
I like the shape of the cab, but isn't the control panal button overkill!

It does look like there are too many buttons but it's only an illusion. Player 1-2 have the normal 6/7 buttons and Player 3-4 have the 4 each. I imagine the extra 2 buttons per player are coin and start buttons. Too bad they are so close to the regular buttons. Having a little space between these buttons would greatly reduce the button overload effect.
The top panel does look like it has too many buttons assuming a 4-way joystick goes there. I'm sure there is a good explanation for it.
Nonetheless it's still very good craftsmenship.

Lots of buttons but still manages to look nice. I can't wait to see the completed pics.

May I STRONGLY suggest that you don't use too many different coloured buttons. Otherwise I see a frakenpanel in your future and nobody wants to see that ;)
Nice looking cab by the way I like the use of ply over mdf.

I second Apollo's comment. I once worked with a graphics artist that used the term 'clown barf' whenever he would see something with too many colours. Nobody wants to play with that ;)

very solid ocnstruct there zero, please keep us informed of the beast hehe.

That thing looks sturdy, to say the least. lots of buttons, interesting layout - look forward to seeing it finished. :)

Coming along GREAT!
I also was inspired for my CP design from "The Supercade". I changed it slightly to suit my needs. But I LOVE the two level design. If I had to do it again, I would the same way.
Good luck with the rest of the project.

Here is a few updated photos of my project.
Control Panel is complete and working. Hooked it up to a test machine and it actually worked the first time. I was real nervious that with all the wires I would have screwed something up and being that I am not electronically inclined it would take forever to find. I really like the way the flight stick worked out, looks real clean the way it installed.
Next step is to put it all in the cab, hopefully within the next few days it should be up and running.

Here is the wiring mess.

Looks nice! That thing is a monster! (in a good sense)

I'll be interested in your continued testing of the panel if there is enough room "below" the player's 1-4 controls to rest your wrists on. It seems pretty tight, but might be enough.
I've got about 7 inches below the controls on mine and I know after continual playing I enjoy being able to rest my wrists there, very non-fatiguing. I know it is not "arcade-accurate", but how long to you sit at one game in the arcade. Not like on the MAME machine.
Good job though, looks nice. Hope you enjoy it now that the CP is done.

I have to try one of these control panels out some time. I don't think I would like to reach in that far to do controls. To me that doesn't seem ergonomic. Especially since they don't have any angle to them. If there was an angle the top one would have a slight steeper angle.
for those that have this design, do your hands get tired from sitting on a pretty level surface?

It looks great with all the buttons and the laminate installed. It turned out much better than I imagined. The different colour buttons make recognizable groups and reduce the clutter.
I'm sorry for doubting you. Keep up the good work.

You should have painted the panel beige and used black buttons. Then you could have named your cab "Swiss Cheese". ;)
Nice work, that isn't easy to build a panel like that when you have 100 chances to drill a hole wrong.
<edit>okay, 47 chances</edit>

What about moon colors and go for a lunar surface.
