Title: Do I need OPTI-PAC with trackball and 2 tornado spinners and 2 LS-30s?
Post by: soslo on October 20, 2003, 11:50:01 am
I am wiring up a 3 sided control panel similar to Frosy's and 1UP's...
Among other things, it has:
1 happ trackball with USB interface
2 tornado spinners with USB interface
2 LS-30 joysticks with Druin's interface.

My question is:
do I need an opti-pac to hook all of these up, or just a USB hub?

Just a USB hub.  Looks like everything is interfaced already.  You might need MAME Analog + to get the two spinners to work in the same game.

Druin's interface will still need to connect to a keyboard encoder (I-PAC or KeyWiz).  I would also recommend using Analog + and mapping the joystick rotation to buttons 4 and 5 when using the LS-30's.

Thanks Tiger. I found the MAME Amalog + page here:
http://www.urebelscum.speedhost.com/

Out of curiousity, why do you recommend using buttons 4 and 5 versus 5 and 6?

Based on U_rebel's page -

0.72.1 (u1)
Added more games with the improved support for rotary games Designed to improve input through Druin's or MK64's 12way interfaces.
Adds two new buttons left and right (counter-clockwise and clockwise), which are buttons # 4 & 5.
Many 12 way rotary games included, but Jake just sent me some more; they will be included in next version.
HowTo Use: if you have druin's 12 way rotary inteface, MK64 12 way rotary interface, or one similar; map the interface's left to button 4, and the interface's right to button 5 for each player. You also might want to disable the mouse and map nothing to the mame "standard" Dial inputs for the specific games.
if you have normal spinners or optical rotary sticks, you might want to map nothing to the added buttons 4 & 5 in the specific games.

If he changed it to 5 & 6 then use those instead.  This is based on MC-Escher's fixes so that each click rotates the figure one and only one increment.

I just realized what you might be confused on . . .

Druin's interface could go to any encoder input, I would probably use Buttons 7 and 8 for this.  Then whatever this outputs (say V and B) needs to be mapped to Button 4 and Button 5 in the IKARI (and SAR, and Midnight Resistance, etc.) menu in Analog +.

Post back if that was hard to follow!!!

Tiger, can I change the dial mappings using the general mame button config or are these 4 and 5 hard-coded?

I plan on using the 7-8 buttons for each player as admin buttons to avoid having to use the IPAC shift functionality.

Thanks,
Aaron

You still didn't understand me . . .   These are buttons 4 and 5 in the game menu!!!

So if Druin's interface is hooked up to I-PAC inputs 5 and 6 (Z and X) on the Default I-PAC set-up, you would set IKAKI to use Button 4 - Z and Button 5 - X

If Druin's interface is hooked up to I-PAC inputs 4 and 5 (L Shift and Z) on the Default set-up, you would set IKARI to use Button 4 - L Shift and Button 5 - X.

The only problem I see with this approach is if you hook Druin's interface up to buttons 5 and 6 and run street fighter, then whenever you spin the joystick, the player would punch.  This could be avoided through multiple panel or by using a DPDT switch to select between joystick rotation and panel buttons.

Sorry Tiger, not trying to frustrate you  ;)

It sounds like I can hook the interface up to whatever I want on the IPAC, and then set the dials by going into the mame defaults menu and setting dial 1 rotate left by spinning the ls30 a notch, and so on.

If there is a special case, then I missed it. Work must be draining me this morning  :-\

No prob.  This can be tough to explain.

No that's the problem.  Trust me on this.  You don't want to use the dial inputs.  They will work, but they are designed for the optical spinners, so you have to mess with the sensitivity settings and you still will get dropped clicks and double clicks.  Set these to NONE or some button that the game never uses and set Button 4 by rotating the LS30 a notch right, and Button 5 by rotating the LS-30 a notch left.  This will only be available in newer MAME Analog + builds.

Ok, that was much better  :)

It looks like I can't have 4 buttons on this panel then...if buttons 4 and 5 are used for rotation of the ls30...hrmm. Ok. No biggie. Are there any games that use 4 buttons and the ls-30?

I don't think so, else u_rebel would have used a higher number.

Now back to the beginning - You can hook the LS-30's into I-PAC inputs 5 and 6.  Then you could have four buttons on the panel for non-LS30 games.

You could also have buttons 5 and 6 on the panel for non LS-30 games - if - you used a DPDT switch to select between the rotary joysticks and the buttons.

The control panel layout is nearly identical to Frosty's...that panel will have 2 ls-30s, 2 top-fires, and 4 buttons per player. There is a fighter panel with a 4 button neo geo row, and of course, an analog panel with the dual tornados, glowing happ trackball, 2 joysticks and a couple buttons...

There is no *need* for 4 buttons...I just don't want to leave out a button if some classic ls-30 game uses 4 buttons.

Had a look at Frosty's site.  Pretty cool.   You could ask him about the 4-button layout, but I think it's to have the directional arrow pattern (some games used this).  Might be cool to have though.

I can't think of an LS-30 game that used even THREE buttons, but there might have been a couple.

Here's what I would do.  Put 4 buttons on the panel.  Wire the LS-30's to buttons 5 and 6 on the I-PAC.  For LS-30 games, map Buttons 4 and 5 to LS-30 left and Right.  Other games can use the 4 buttons and the LS-30's won't interfere with them.

Hope this helps!

Reviving this dead thread cause I am still having probs with dual usb spinners...I can't seem to use the mame button interface to change the dial settings like I can with the regular buttons.

Any help?

Mame doesn't change mouse direction inputs.  The only thing mame can change are the mouse buttons.  If you want to change which mouse axis controls which game player axis, you'll need MameAnalog+ or AdvancedMame, or a few others.

To change which mouse controls which player, you need to enable the switchablemice option, go into the game UI (tab), and select the added "Mouse Controls".  That mouse's X axis changes to that player's X axis and that mouse Y axis to the player Y axis.

To change the axes individually, use the switchmiceaxes option instead.

For both spinner to work at the same time in mame(Analog+), both mice need to work at the same time in windows.  (I answered more about this in  your other thread (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=13393)).

I used mame analog+ and the "switchmice 1"  option. So the 2 usb spinners and the PS2 trackball are all working in perfect harmony  ;)

Thanks eveyone!
