Post by: SirPoonga on October 20, 2003, 12:27:54 am
Quote from /.

This is nothing new. Check out Arcadecontrols.com [arcadecontrols.com] . Folks have been building there own arcades for awhile now.

If you want to check out an utlimate Mame box, take a look here:
1UP's Arcade [1uparcade.com]
This dude has a spinning control panel.

I posted that.  The /. story was about a MAME cabinet.  It was nice and all, but I'm not quite sure why it was on /.  It was really a standard MAME cab running Linux.

I just wanted to show the rest of the geeks something cool!  ;D

Oh no I posted a link too lol :) sorry 1up.

I took offense to the title of the article:
Strudelkugel writes "Aaron Mahler, director of network services at Sweetbriar College, has built the ultimate MAME box. His site describes his efforts in detail. Lot of cool pics, too."

so I posted too:

Ultimate MAME box? (Score:2, Informative)

Ultimate MAME box? That's a bold statement. Granted, it's nice.. but nothing really revolutionary. There are some much better examples of cabinets with original artwork or insane designs such as: 1-up's Pac-Mamea [1uparcade.com], Mamestation II [leafstation.com].. It's a very nice box tho. I'd prefer swappable control panels to a one panel jammed with controls, but eh.. to each his own. For tons of examples, go to Build Your Own Arcade Controls [arcadecontrols.com].

damn /.ers .. Anything linux is "the ultimate" lol :-D

heh, I posted a link to 1up's and frosty's and arcade controls in slashdot as well... (before realizing others had already done that)

I also plugged my cabinet =P

I think it made it to /. homepage because it had the word "linux" in it =P

If I created a chicken that pooped penguin-shaped fecal matter they'd post it on slash dot.

I know many geeks sware by it, but I think it's a rather lame site imho.  Actually any site that's linux oriented is usually lame.  Of course I'm sure the linux users will disagree, but then again when your sites' fan base consisits of people who can speak klingon, your perspective on what is "cool" is drastically skewed.  ;)

rasslin involves explosions, violence, pretty women and sometimes midgets.  The ONLY way it could be cooler is if they somehow added monkeys to the mix.    8) ;D

Hopefully you all realize that Slashdot is not the same as Linux. Hell, most of its users use windows exclusively. I use windows only, so I can't say all the windows bashing stuff. But I do believe that any competition is good for the market, and for users as well.

The slashdot crowd is a bizzarre bunch... but swearing off the benefits of Linux cuz of it is just....

silly.

Uhhhhh...if that's, they must never post.

Besides, no one's talking about the benefits of one OS over another - we're talking about how most slashdotters are socially inept mongoloids.

I just think that original Slashdot story was so lame.  Wow he built a Mame cabinet and runs linux on it.  It is a nice cab, but nothing spectacular.  That's why I posted about 1Up's cab.

I guess it must of been a really slow news day for Slashdot.

DUHRRRR!!!  :B  I just realized the point of your post, SirP!  Just checked my site stats, and yeah, my monthly traffic actually tripled in just one day!  Fortunately, I don't think it will affect my quota so I don't have to pay extra this month, unless the trend continues...  (I really do need to switch to a cheaper/better webhost.  :P )

checkout www.1and1.com they have 3 years hosting for free. They do have some bandwidth limits but they are pretty high, check their web site.

I thought that it was strange to see the post on Slashdot considering one of the founders of Slashdot, Rob Malda (a.k.a CmdrTaco). Built the Jubei cabinet a few years ago.  He even responded in the thread on Slashdot under the alias "Jubei".  In my mind this is a nicer cab than the Ultimate MAME cab in the post.

Slashdot affect is always interesting...

Day before story:

95,000 hits, 67,000 files served, 1 gig of bandwidth (on .com site only, doesn't include .org message board site)  Basically average for BYOAC.

October 20th:

168,000 hits, 121,543 files served, 1.8 gigs of bandwidth on .com site.

Wonder what a front page mention does...

I just looked at the stats again.  My bandwidth, which was well below my limit, has peaked overnight...  :-X

Looks like I'm switching to the free hosting...

I'm switching webhosts.  I'm going for the 1and1 3 years free/ 500mb storage/ 5gb bandwidth deal for now.  Thing is, it's gonna be probably 24hrs or so before all the DNS get switched over, so my sites gonna have a lot of little red X's tomorrow...and I still have to pay for any more bandwidth that gets sucked up before then...  :P

Hey 1UP,

Let me know how the new webhosting site is...I went out there and looked it over, and it looks great.  Just wanted to get someone's personal experience with them.  Thanks  :)
