I love Q-bert.  It's too bad on my control panel Q-bert is unplayable  :'( .  In the past, I played way too much Q-bert on NES.

I have an NOS Willis Q*Bert control panel overlay on the way from Todd at TNT Amusements. I am going to use it to make a standalone Q*Bert panel.

Hey T-Octopus,
If you have an 8-way on your control panel then you can play Q-bert and Congo Bongo just fine. Go into the "Input this game" menu in Mame and do this. For joystick right, re enter it by quickly moving your 8-way joystick right and then down. If you do it quickly mame will except both inputs. For left hit left and up. For up hit up and right and lastly for down hit down and left. Setting it up like this will allow mame to only recognize the horizontals which is what you want for Q-bert and Congo Bongo. This is the next best thing if you don't have a 4-way mounted on a 45 degree angle. It works quite well.

I had to re-read that a few times but then I got it.  I got confused because I think you meant MAME only reconized diagonals.  Good idea!

I was toying with the idea of adding a diagonal four way on my panel, but that's back burner for now.

I'm playing it with my 4-way.  It takes a few games to get a feel for it, but it's playable.
I've got Oscar's Q*Bert restrictor installed in another control panel on a Happ's super and it helps, too.

Has anyone worked up plans on how to rotate a 4 way to play these games? I looked at it for a while but it always got too complicated.

I will try the "input this game" suggestion. I hope it works...

My MAME machine is an original Q*bert (converted to a Side Arms).  I decided to make a dedicated Q*bert CP (out of wood) just for the fun of it.  It doesn't have the artwork, but it looks cool with the Q*bert marquee and the lower artwork with Q*bert playing on the monitor!

!#@*!%,

I love this game so much I had to put a dedicated 4 way on my cp.  It is the blue stick up left.

This is my conversion of a POW cab to a Q*Bert. My joystick in on a slotted plate that allows me to rotate the baseplate for Q*Bert of normal.
