Title: Poll: Do you run emulators other than MAME for arcade games?
Post by: BadMouth on October 26, 2012, 04:56:56 pm
I thought this would be an interesting poll.

There are pokey-roms (gotta get 'em all!), there are old schoolers who insist nothing after 1985 is worth emulating, and I'm sure there are plenty in between.
I'm curious how many people on here just stick to MAME and don't use other emulators or stick to an older version of MAME.
This poll is only concerning arcade emulators, not console emulators.

I'll bite. I run other emulators a little as possible because I hate most of them. Mame really has a good system down that works for a ton of games and has very few problems (as an emulator not on a per game basis). Things work consistently with it in my experience. All other arcade emulators seem to have so many problems. Demul has to be the worst of them. I wouldn't put that thing anywhere near my main mame cab due to the number of crashes and workarounds using scripts just to get the games to run.

I did just buy a candy cab new astro city last night that I don't really have plans for yet so I think once I get bored of the game it came with then I'll probably use it as my "just for me" arcade where I put a bunch of newer game releases and other emulators. Then when there are a million problems I don't have to deal with other people coming up to me and saying they don't know what happened it just crashed, or its coming up with some weird error message.

So for that reason, just mame and hyperspin. I do stay fairly up to date with mame but not every release. Every few I'd say or if I see something I like.

I've got to chime in on this one as well.  Great poll BTW Badmouth.  Supermodel has been a lot of fun for me also.  The official ver 0.2 still has some bugs but the newest SVN is pretty dang good.  I love me a good fighting game so in Fighting Vipers 2 when you can knock your opponent completely through the cage wall to finish.........ohhh that gets me every time... :o  This game has some really nice graphics too

I'll bite.

It's not meant to be a trap or put anyone down.  :lol

I've noticed that when people ask questions in the Mala subforum about other emulators like Demul or Supermodel, there usually isn't much of a response.  My driving cab forced me to find workarounds for most of the PITA ones since it's a big deal to be able to add one more game to it.
I want to add Super Mario Kart GP2 next, but am avoiding the anticipated hassle of learning how to set it up and finding out whether it's even playable or not on the pc I have.

I'm in the middle of setting up the software all these other emulators on my new cab that is solely for my own use.  :D
The original idea was to have it focus on newer games ('95 & up), but it's becoming more of an all-arounder to the point that I'm considering adding a 4-way stick.

I'm running what I consider to be the best "Arcade" emulators available:

MAME
Daphne
Sega M2
Demul (arcade games only)
Supermodel 3

One Simulator:
Future Pinball

And a few PC Arcade Ports (PC Software) - House of the Dead III, Rolling Madness, Big Buck Hunter, etc.

That's my build. See here for more info:
http://www.cheapskategamer.com/pc_game_stories_and_news/building-an-arcade-emulation-cabinetpart-one-software/ (http://www.cheapskategamer.com/pc_game_stories_and_news/building-an-arcade-emulation-cabinetpart-one-software/)

The link below was very influential in helping me figure out which emulators to include in my "Super Arcade". I strongly recommend it for Arcade builders. No redundancy of emuation:
http://nonmame.retrogames.com (http://nonmame.retrogames.com)

The only other emulator that I strongly considered was DICE. Qualifies under my build goals but I ultimately decided against it.

On my cab with only standard joysticks, the only fully playable game I came up with is Spikeout. (which is good because I love me some beat 'em ups)

Fighting Vipers is running super slow for me (spikeout runs full speed).  Any trick settings for that game?
I think I'm on SVN 2.7something.  I seem to remember it running faster before.

Of course I love Supermodel on the driving cab.  ;D

EDIT: edited #3 in the poll to mention daphne.

MAME, Supermodel, Daphne, DICE, and Daphne Singe.

I haven't used DICE.  I know some people use it for pong and that's about all I know. Guess I need to see what I'm missing.

I tried Daphne Singe for the light gun games and felt it degraded the video quality too much.  I've read ripping the video from DVDs looks better.
Been debating on whether to buy a copy of Time Traveler and use it with Daphne Singe.
I really hated that game when I was young, but I'm a bit of a PokeRom.

Badmouth. When I first set up Supermodel 3/Fighting Vipers, it ran like a slide show. Now it runs smooth as butter.
I think the key was to update to the latest SVN version which is essentially Supermodel ver 0.3
http://www.emucr.com/2012/09/supermodel-svn-r270.html (http://www.emucr.com/2012/09/supermodel-svn-r270.html)

Try it. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll dig through my notes. I got it running FAST. :)

I have svnr270, but I just copied it into my old folder, so there may be some part of the old ini file screwing it up.
That's generally considered a shady source, btw.  People have reported picking up trojans from there.  ;)

I really hated that game when I was young, but I'm a bit of a PokeRom.

I tweaked and recompiled DICE so it would work correctly with a typical MAME setup. It's configured a bit differently out of the box.

The video looks ok On Singe to me, but I haven't run it on a CRT yet, which I think might smooth it out.

And I bought Time Traveler. Totally worth it, but I liked playing back then!

Actually, I fixed it so that it would work with my joysticks. I only have one spinner, so I didn't try it with them.

I use mame32 1.32 and I stick with it.

I use future pinball and I have a copy of Tekken X Street Fighter on there which acts just like a ps3 game, it even gives you the "dont turn off your computer while data is saving" message, as if anybody is going to just power off there computer mid-game like they would using a ps3 or xbox
