Hey guys, l've seen some youtube videos of people who have joysticks on their cabinets that can be changed from 4-way to 8-way and back without having to open the CP and adjust the restricter plate; l think you pull up on the joystick and twist maybe?
Does anyone know where l can get one of these, and do they work well enough?

I think you are referring to the Magstick from Ultimarc. I have seen many mixed reviews on them. I decided to just go with something else.

more specifically you would want the magstick plus which allows the lift and twist switching. with the standard magstick, you need to open and activate a switch.
now there is the servo switching model

I personally prefer a round gate for my 8-way (not crazy about the square 8way gate) so I have my left stick with a round gate and my right stick with the switchable square gate.

I bought two Magsticks about 6 years ago and both are still going strong after lots pulling and twisting! :laugh2:
That sounded bad, but still true!

MagStiks are pretty nice. My only big complaint is that switching is a little tricky and guests can never figure it out on their own.
If you want to get fancy, Ultimarc now has their Servo-Stik (modded JLW) that will switch automatically for you.

I agree that guest never know how to change. I had one buddy who was over for game nights for over 5 years, and I'd still be like " Pull and twist". :laugh2:
Hmmmm I may have to look into those Servo Stiks after the wedding. ;D It is past the time to re-build my CP.

Guests never know how to change the sticks and never know which mode they should be in or which mode they are in.

This seems like a good moment to plug the Ultrastick 360. Yes, it's expensive... and yes, it's only available from the one source... but in my experience it does live up to the billing, and the ones I've used have been totally hassle-free in operation. All the games in MAME know how to interpret its input and automagically translate it to whatever form they require: 8-way, 4-way, 4-way diagonal, analog, etc.

The Ultimarc ServoStik is another option.
