Title: Playstation 3 hacked for good?
Post by: hypernova on October 25, 2012, 12:25:55 am
Level 0 Security Layer Exposed (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57539756-1/sonys-playstation-3-experiences-its-biggest-hack-yet/?part=rss&subj=news&tag=title).

According to the article, there really isn't anything Sony can do about this one.  While they can continue to release firmware updates, they can just be overwritten with custom firmwares.  Article makes it sound like fully updated consoles for now will have to wait; that it will work for now only on consoles that are already running custom firmware.  I'm sure that will change.

Everyone's been on 3.55 for TWO YEARS.  I finally broke down and bought a dongle and it's a severe pain in the ass.

Downloading a 20GB game and then waiting 6 months for it to be patched was annoying, too.

Mine's only been used for blurays the last year or so.

When mine wouldnt play Iron Man 2 BluRay that was when we stopped using it and I just built a cheapie (aka spare parts) media PC with a bluray drive

I gave up on optical media years ago.  Sick of dealing with scratched rental discs and unreliable players.  The only time I ever use a disc these days is to rip it to storage.

Yeah I think Battle Los Angeles was the one that wouldn't play for me.  My cheap standalone bluray player doesn't give me grief about constant upgrades so my 3.55 CFW PS3 has been collecting dust a long time too.

I'm not into the ps3 scene at all but I find stuff like this interesting.
Is there an expected result of this?

Over at friend's house that's got a legit PS3.  Decide we'll pop in a Bluray.... 2 hours later and still downloading the latest Sony firmware update.

What a freaking awesome system.  Yeesh.

haha, sucks for games too, especially for one with mandatory install then patch. If you got hit with a system update at the same time it gets ridiculous. Plus I think for a lot of stuff you have to wait for it to install after you download it. Then once the system updates comes its ---fudgesicle--- all different lol

my ps3 is pretty useless now a days. its not even a great media player. I mostly used it for metal gear online and since that went offline my ps3 has been collecting dust.

only games I actually use it for is occasional marvel and sf3 online. even thats kind of bad. like I cant find ppl to play or its really laggy. I dont remember xbox live being that bad/laggy. it was very acceptable when I had it for few years.

I've tried them both and the 360's online play is waaay better.  Then again, you pay for it, so that's probably the difference.

Didn't have much luck with my 3.55 after the release of newer games.  My bluray drive broke so it was convenient to play off of the harddrive. Now I don't even remember how to do this.

I use it to play movies on and Netflix etc.

The last game I bought for it was Williams Pinball Collection and that is gathering dust.

I use the 360 more now then ever before.

Sucks to be Sony.

I'll probably pick one up at the next price drop... a few exclusives

Ico HD
Pixeljunk stuff
Flower/Flow/Journey
Uncharted series
(and I wouldn't mind playing through the Ratchet/Sly Cooper series again)

def. want to experience PS3 stuff, but willing to wait until it is dirt cheap.
