Title: Mame32 and 2-player Warlords .....possible?
Post by: unclet on October 11, 2003, 12:15:32 pm
I have two spinners on my standup cabinet which are both USB mouse hacks.  Both hacks are to the X-axis optics.   My questrion is, does Mame32 allow for axis switching so I can use one of these spinner USB mice to control X-axis movement and the other one to control Y-axis movement) so I can play 2 player Warlords (or any other 2 player spinner games).

If so, what do I need to do?

If not, why has this feature not been implemented yet since it seems like it would not take to much effort.

Mame: Analog+ sports the features you're looking for.

Use the "-splitaxes" option.

I think Warlords actually used paddles, which were joystick axes.  The spinner still works pretty nice, but I was considering trying to get my old Atari paddles to plug in to my computer as joystick axes.  It'd give me four paddles to use on that game if I did.  (I love Warlords.  It's been a favorite since I had it for Atari.  :))

Joystick axes?   Would you do this by connecting four paddles to the gameport?   If not, how do you see yourself connecting the paddles?

PC Analog joystick hack.  I would go with USB, because I dislike the gameport.

One way would be to replace the pots in some atari paddles with the pots from the PC analog joystick, and keep the pots wired to the analog joystick:
Paddle--------PC Analog Joystick--------PC

I already have 2 Sidewinder Dual Strike hacks soldered & ready, so I plan to use them for 4-player Warlords paddle hacks.  I just need some 5k pots and I'll plug them into my Dual Strike hack's molex connectors.

I'd hate to rip apart my classic Atari paddles though.  I might measure the pots inside them, and see if they are the same resistance - then I could just have a couple of Atari-style plugins on my cab somewhere, and plug them in when I want 'em.  Or I could just put four pots and four buttons on a little metal panel, and get knobs for the pots, that'd be just as easy.

I think you can get four joystick axes out of a PC gameport pretty easily...  but it's been a loong time since I've even glanced at a gameport spec.  I think all you have to do is wire the pots to some of the pins, and it's ready to go.
