Title: joystick ID
Post by: SavannahLion on October 09, 2012, 01:20:27 pm
Years ago, as a tot, I came across a stick that didn't pivot like standard sticks but "slide" into position. My recollection is this was a full sized stick but that was probably just an artifact of being a child. I also remember my grade school teacher being 7 feet tall, imagine my surprise as an adult, to discover she barely reached 5'5".

It was for a computer of that era, probably the C64. I never saw anything like it in the arcades.
NES and some later consoles did have a similar 3rd party joypad where you could slide a disc around the compass points.
It certainly wasn't a "pencil" stick that was apparently common around that time. And it certainly wasn't a joypad, those won't become common until a few years later.

I think this would make an interesting control scheme and I'm curious as to how it was done with old tech.

Anyone ever come across it?

I do remember the NES Max.  My kids use one now occasionally.  Doesn't help the actual question but maybe the pic can jog someone else's memory.

Did it work like a Neo Geo Pocket stick? That almost gives the impression of sliding, but just uses microswitches...

I have looked at a lot of c64 joysticks and some atari ones too as they both used the same plugs (Same goes for sega master system but that's later than what your saying)

I haven't been able to see a joystick that slides at all do you have any information on what it looked like? was it a standard joystick with a base for the table? or was it held in your hand?
