Im planning on ordering one of these this month. However ill most likely be modifying it to be a little wider so anyone playing isnt super close together. The other thing I was thinking about doing since it will be apart was maybe swapping out the stock buttons for LED buttons. Can this be done using the x arcade usb interface..meaning will any old buttons work as long as the wiring is right?

To widen it, you'd have to build a new base as well as top.
So basically, you want to buy it and throw everything away except for the joysticks and encoder?
Either just fork over the extra money for the tankstick or build your own from scratch.
Any standard US style 1 1/8" buttons will work, but you'd have to run a separate power supply for the LEDs.

+1 on build your own. You'll have more flexibility and it will probably cost a bit less in the long run and you'll be able to choose better quality components.

Not necessarily. Use 12v LED buttons and power them using 5v from a USB power tap using a circuit like this one (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119562.msg1270434.html#msg1270434) that I use to light up to 14 buttons and a trackball -- it only draws 81mA.
An unpowered USB hub provides 100mA per port, so you can easily power your encoder and LEDs with room to add a few game pads (for P3/P4) or a trackball and spinner.

Yeah I've been looking at the ipac boards..no clue on which one to pick. Being on a budget sucks

If you're on a tight budget, try Degenatron's AVR encoder (https://sites.google.com/site/degenatrons/controller-interfaces/usb-keyboard-encoder/resources) (keyboard encoder) in Group B, Mode 1 a.k.a. Extended Mode or Vigo's ZD-Rematch (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116490.0.html) (gamepad encoder).
The ZD-Rematch is easier to wire up since it comes with the wires, but if you are planning on using Visual Pinball/Future Pinball, a keyboard encoder is the better choice.

Almost forgot to include Degenatron's KADE project that should be released soon.
