Title: Advice on bonding wood...should I use bondo and how much of a gap??
Post by: willybeamish on October 03, 2012, 11:19:17 am
Currently redoing the bottom on my cab and getting rid of the rot. So we made a replica bottom and plan on doing a frame on the inside to keep it sturdy however we wanted to bondo the seam and wasnt sure about the gap to leave room for the bondo..looking for ideas and advice on

Now here is our question...how much of gap should we leave for the bondo to fill in?? We left a penny inbetween for now..nothing it screwed together yet..

I don't think i'd leave a gap.  If anything I'd put a slight chamfer on the two boards, maybe an eighth inch, and glue and clamp the boards together.  After the glue dries, then fill the chamferd gap with bondo and sand it out.

Bonding hardwood together like this, i just use biscuits or dowels and then glue, clamp and sand.  I prefer biscuits since dowel alignment is tough. 1/64" off is noticable.

Sounds like a good idea...The dowels is a great suggestion too!!!

I advise against dowels on butt joints.  You may end up with a noticable ridge that you can't sand off.

I strongly suspect that Yaksplat really knows his shizz.     I was all set to reply with my own suggestions only to see that he'd already covered everything I was about to suggest and more.

Any man that uses a Ron Swanson pic as his avatar definately knows his ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.
